October 12th Session to Focus on Chemicals of Emerging Concern [Windsor, Ontario] – Dr. Saad Jasim, Director of the Great Lakes Regional Office (GLRO) of the International Joint Commission announced today that his office is launching a series of public seminars on critical Great Lakes issues. The first seminar will be on Tuesday, October 12 th from 7:00pm to 8:30pm in the C.A.W. Student Centre at the University of Windsor and will feature a presentation by Dr. Jasim. The seminar will provide the public with information about the role of the IJC in assessing progress in restoring the Great Lakes under the Boundary Waters Treaty and the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. In particular, Dr. Jasim’s presentation will highlight recent priority work regarding Chemicals of Emerging Concern – one of the most important water quality issues. Future seminars will address other priority work being conducted for the Commission, including beach and recreational water quality, harmful and nuisance algae, benefits and risks of Great Lakes fish consumption, aquatic invasive species and the development of a framework for the assessment of nearshore conditions in the Great Lakes. An award-winning scientist, engineer and teacher, Dr. Jasim has been the GLRO Director since May of this year. Previously, he was the first CEO of the Walkerton Clean Water Centre and also was the Director of Water Quality and Production for the Windsor Utilities Commission.
