Kathmandu Medical College

The primary objective of KMC is to provide quality medical education within a modern academic environment to produce qualified medical professionals who can contribute to society by means of their knowledge, attitude, skills and professionalism. KMC follows a studentcentered curriculum that is community as well as problem and need based. KMC aims to develop into a centre of excellence, setting new standards in medical education and high quality medical care.

Teaching Hospital. Several of our teaching staff have had considerable teaching experience in Medical Colleges in India and abroad. KMC is permanently affiliated to Kathmandu University and fully Students attending examination recognised by the Nepal Medical Council and the Sri Lanka Medical Council. The working experience at KMCTH is recognised to enable doctors to sit in the postgraduate entrance examinations held by other universities. Kathmandu Medical College has also been listed in the WHO's World Directory of Medical Schools electronic format as from June 2002. Following full recognition by NMC, KMC is listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED). KMC is also an Associate Member of the Network of Community Based Medical Schools that has its headquarters NMC visit at Ghent in Belgium.

KMC Teaching Hospital, Sinamangal

The daily outpatient attendance has exceeded eight hundred fifty during summer months and the inpatient admissions show a healthy increase everyday. A patient is the doctor's best guide OPD and every student needs to have exposure to a variety of cases for his/her education to be complete. Our aim in the coming years is to have a patient flow on par with the decades old government run hospitals of the Valley.

Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) has been in operation for more than twelve years. As from Sept. 2009 it is a Public Limited institution. A management committee comprising of leading doctors, businessmen and bankers is running the college. The alarming cost of medical education abroad and the fact that it is out of reach of the majority of the populace prompted us to initiate this venture and we hope to provide service which is easily accessible, reasonably cheap and of the highest standards. The fact that the number of the sick and the needy are increasing almost everyday at our hospital has only encouraged us to work even harder.

The basic sciences complex of KMC at Duwakot is twenty minutes drive by car from the clinical section at the Sinamangal hospital premises. The pollution free environment and the scenic locale are ideal to start ones medical education.

The clinical complex located at Sinamangal has five multi- Diagnostic Area and Paying Cabins, Sinamangal storied buildings. The academic complex, in addition to the KMC Teaching Hospital, also houses the academic and examination section, lecture halls, library and canteen. An academic complex has faculty rooms. Another has diagnostic area and paying cabins. A separate building houses the centre for Eye, Dental, Dermatology and Psychiatry. Physiotherapy is in another building. All departments are fully staffed and we are proud to have many famous names of the Nepali medical community guiding us.

The college has well stocked libraries in Duwakot and Sinamangal. CDROMS, journals and periodicals are available to students. HealthNet facilities are also available and 24 journals are available on line. Every department also has a small departmental library.

Kathmandu Medical College functions from two complexes - Duwakot basic sciences and Sinamangal clinical sciences. The KMC Teaching Hospital, located within the ring road and just near the airport, has easy access to domestic and international flights. Prof. Dr. Govind P Dr. H. Dixit Sharma, former VC of TU is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KMC. Prof. Hemang Dixit, who has already served as Dean of Institute of Medicine / Tribhuvan University, is the Principal. There is a girls hostel at Sinamangal within walking distance from the Teaching Hospital complex. All the clinical students of KMC wanting to stay in hostel are accommodated here. Mess facilities are available in the both complexes. A member of the administrative staff has been deputed to oversee the students. Girl’s Hostel, Sinamangal The hostel is provided with basic necessities and has a common room. A lady warden is responsible for the day-today management of the Girls hostel.

Paediatrics and Anaesthesia started in Feb 2009. Orthopaedics and Community Medicine were started from Feb. 2010.

KMC has been running the BSc Nursing for the last five years and since August 2010 it has also started MSc in Physiology.

The result of final MBBS examination of the first nine batches conducted under Kathmandu University so far has produced a total of 688 doctors. The break down of this is as follows: First Batch of Doctors I. Of this 472 were Nepali consisting of 280 males and 192 females. ll. There were 123 male and 86 female Indian students who qualified as doctors. III. Two girls and three boys from Sri Lanka have qualified as doctors so far. There has been one male student from Fiji and a girl from Myanmar. iv. Two NRNs boys have qualified.

1. The fees and accommodation charges quoted will be applicable only to students admitted during the academic year 2010-2011. In addition KMC management is authorised to charge a small fee for specific services provided to students such as library and Internet. 2. There are penalties for non-payment of tuition fees. Students who fail to pay their fees by the stipulated dates will not be allowed to: a) Borrow library books, resource learning materials, etc. b) Sit for any semester/university examinations of Kathmandu University. c) Late payment charges will be levied - 1st month – 0.5 %, thereafter – 1 % per month.
