What is Balanced
Literacy?         
 Balanced Literacy is a framework
designed to help all students learn to
read and write effectively.  The
program stands firmly on the
premise that all students can learn to
read and write. This balance between
reading and writing allows students
to receive the teaching needed in
order to reach grade level status,
while allowing students to work at a
level that is not frustrating for them.

Reading
Principals
 Students need explicit, systematic
instruction in phonics and exposure
to rich literature.
 They need instruction in phonics in
early development, within a context
of meaning, comprehension
strategies, language development,
and writing.
Goals
 Develop listening, speaking, reading
and writing abilities.
 Phonics and phonemic awareness.
 It’s most important goal is to teach
comprehension.
Teachers Role
 Theteacher is a facilitator that
provides:
 Different reading and writing
materials.
 Gives the students the
opportunity to express
themselves.
 Models and supports students
in writing and reading skills.
