Career fashions founded by Cheryl and Carolyn who are in fashion industry mainly
manufacturing uniforms for schools, hospitals and restaurents. After fourteen months of success
in their fashion business which also made profits, unfortunately their aroused situation where
Carolyn planned to leave the business due to some personal issues and her interest to pursue
other career. As we know that Carolyn has a prefunded background in fashion and past training
in the fashion field. This required some attention from Cheryl since, Carolyn was taking care of
all the designs and style for manufacturing uniforms where as Cheryl was getting orders and
mainly focused on production and order dispatch. Before Career Fashions introduction Cheryl
MAINTAINED ANTIQUE FURNUITURE STORE which she maintained parallel with Career
Fashions. The second issue is µwhether to continue with the furniture business or not¶. This is an
important decision which Cheryl should make such that both the business would not overlap in
their operations since they are located in one building. Third issue for the company and for
Cheryl is µwhether to operate in Prince Edward Island market or expand it to mainland¶. Fourth
issue for Career Fashions is, currently the company manufactures only uniforms whether it
would be favorable to expand more production lines with which the company can also produce
other fashions. Above all one thing which really fickles Cheryl is whether or will she be able to
maintain both operations and production lines, Since she is a µinfant in fashion designs µwas that
which made her think whether to continue with the fashion business or turn to the old antique
furniture business which was her early career.

These are the main issues from my view point. It all depends on Cheryl now which path to
choose in order to overcome from this current situation. Cheryl¶s decision is obviously very
much important since, she should decide whether to continue with their passion of becoming
good entrepreneurs¶ by sticking to Career Fashions or shift back to her old furniture business.

The direct stake holders of the company Cheryl, Carolyn followed by the employees working for
Career Fasions.Note that µBANKS AND FINANCES µfrom whom Career Fashions has taken
financial support also come under the direct stake holders. In my view the raw material
suppliers(especially fabric supplying mills etc) will also join indirect stake holders as it is with
their material the garments are made.

That is the reason I mentioned above that Cheryl¶s decision is very important since all the people
related to the above fields especially the employees would suffer if she winds up Career
Fashions. As the company has bank loans and financial support earlier it becomes very difficult
for Cheryl to repay those amounts monthly (or) yearly. I f we can notice deeply this should affect
the performance of the furniture and antique store if she plans to quit Career Fashions because
end of the day she will be the one who will be repaying the debts related to CAREER
FASHIONS.

Customers who are very much comfortable and satisfied with the care free uniform style are the
main indirect stake holders. Career Fashions almost created a µnew trend µby designing casual
street wear maintenance free uniforms for its varied customers just by replacing the traditional
stiff uniforms. I think it takes a lot of time for its customers to find a new supplier with same
fashion. In my view the raw material suppliers (especially fabric supplying mills etc) will also
join indirect stake holders as it is with their material the garments are made.

It all depends, like the employee jobs, customers choice with career fashions would all depend
on the decision taken by Cheryl. Moreover Career Fashions developed good image and local
customer¶s support was also seen. Career Fashions uniforms have become perfect substitute for
the old fashioned tight outfitters.

Career fashions should withdraw from its idea to enter mainland since there is presence
of big manufacturers who are already µplaying in that area¶. Entering mainland might
stimulate competition but it affects quality of goods manufactured due to big orders. We
should bear that Career Fashions is not carrying µlarge equipment and employees¶ to cater
big orders.
Multiple production lines are not suggestable.Sticking on to uniform business for some
more time is favorable to Career Fashions.
If Carolyn quit from Career Fashions then my suggestion is to employ NEW PEOLE
WITH GOOD FASHION SKILLS AND TRAINING so, absence of Carolyn¶s presence
is not on Career Fashions.
From the given data it states ³Despite the overhead, the prices are competitive with those
of large manufacturers´. Basic thing which attracts every customer in the market is µprice
µCareer fashions was doing good maintaining its quality but should also frame less
pricing for its products than its competitors.

·Any company whether established (or) a budding one it is essential to employ a good team
of business experts. This may cost the company since it should pay salary but their presence
is required to deal with situations like this.

It is not that simple to operate two established business. You may have customers coming
to buy furniture but ending up buying clothes. This is not sure in all the cases. Moreover, the
management may lose focus on Career Fashions by maintaining both which is not good
SINCE THE FURNUITURE BUSINESS IS STRUGGLING TO GET A NICHE IN THE
MARKET.

My suggestion for the company is not to focus much on profits or money making but on
expansion, expertise and better marketing.

Running a fashion store parallel to a antique furniture store is not at all similar. My
suggestion is to µLEASE¶ the furniture store to a third party who are already good in that
particular business so that you don¶t need to focus much on furniture store.\

j The idea of entering mainland would allow career fashions to expand its operations
but no guarantee whether it succeed or not since it competitors or well established in
that market and it makes Career Fashions focus much on competition than on quality.
j Confining to one production line i.e. manufacturing uniforms is better since more
production lines need more infrastructure and people which Cheryl at present doesn¶t
have. Atmosphere is not really tensed having one production line.
j Carolyn quitting Career Fashion shouldn¶t be the end of the business but Cheryl can
also run it by employing new people who are experts in that field. Cheryl should think
that this quiet common in business field and try not to lose hope on Career Fashions
which did a good service to the local people and earned appreciation in very short
time after its establishment.
j Pricing of manufactured goods should be focused since, the companies uniforms are
much preferred there are chances where competitors in the local market may mark
down prices which in turn would affect Career Fashions business. µWhen you are new
and need more customers price really does matter.¶
j Employing people with good skills and who can develop innovative ideas and
implement them will certainly build up the company¶s sales and fame.
j We know the saying that µone person cannot simultaneously sail on two boats¶. Many
successful business have multiple production lines I agree but not in the starting
stages as of Career Fashions. My suggestion as I mentioned earlier is Lease the
furniture store to an active business in furniture in that market.
j Profits are important for any company but many new companies would not focus
much on profits for a couple of years. Best example is µFord Motors Company µwhich
started profiting from fourth year of its establishment. Thus much focus to be laid on
expansion, quality etc.

j Cheryl has long time back established Furniture and antique business. Just by
leasing it to a new company may not yield profits for it. Moreover who in the
market would try to merge with a company which wasn¶t performing that well.
j New skillful employees can render good service for Career Fashions but they are
just working for the sake of salary. No guarantee that they will be so passionate as
Carolyn was.
j If in future Career Fashions produce uniforms of a bit higher quality than those of
the current ones. The pricing for the new quality of uniform may affect if they
operate on µlow pricing¶.

I hereby present all the issues and suggested alternatives for Career Fashions. I
consider Carolyn quitting from the company and consequences to be faced if she
quits. I am also suggesting some alternatives for the company so that Career
Fashion survive. I am recommending Career Fashions to continue with its Fashion
business by taking some alternatives. Passionate workers such as Carolyn are hard
to get but employees hired can be trained in a proper fashion so that they work
efficiently and ethically. Career Fashions was successful and proved good results
just after four months after establishment. This is a very good sign and Career
Fashions should march on with set of new people and ideas. Trying and
implementing new strategies would cost a lot., but at this point of time we should
take a viable decision and that is a compulsion since Carolyn is leaving the
company.
Thoughts always lead to actions I request you to take a standard decision so that
the current issues are fixed and would help Career Fashion expand in different
markets.
