Concertizing, parade-marching, and plain old "jazzing it up" ... Around Rice, while most school activities tended to begin in September, the Band, including its incoming Freshman members, started in early June, when new marching techniques were learned, and later put into practice during the Band's regular marching season, which consisted of four football halftimes, two major parades, and a tour to Florida, where the group played in Disney World, Sea World, and Circus World.

The Chorus consists of almost one hundred Brother Rice and Mother McAuley students. Brother Perkins has directed the group during the past five years in addition to assisting with the Concert Band. The Chorus has grown significantly during Brother Perkins' tenure; over the course of the year, they performed for the Dads' Club, student body, and during formal concert situations. Their repertoire runs from the serious to the popular, and Around Rice their contribution is invaluable.

Around Rice, the scholastic, aesthetic, and "neat" atmosphere is helped to a great extent by the efforts of the Brother Rice Mothers' Club. Many of these dedicated women come together on the second Wednesday of each month to demonstrate in a concrete way their interest in their sons. Brother Hennessy moderates the group, assisted by Brother Coleman. Whether it's a Fashion Show, the Spring Fling, the Ad Book, or a regular meeting, in one way or another, the school's reputation and facilities are enhanced.

Dances, Basketball games, Football games, indoors and outdoors, the Dads are there to help out. In addition, their fundraising activities have traditionally been a big help in keeping things as lively as they are during the school year. Led by President George Miller and Moderator Br. Around Rice, the athletes would not be able to do as well without the equipment purchased by the dedicated men of the Alumni Dads Club. Co-sponsoring the Smoker with the Dads' Club and holding a big money raffle are the two main fund-raising activities of this group.

STUDENT COUNCIL GUARDIANS AND PROMOTERS OF SCHOOL SPIRIT
The Brother Rice Student Council concluded another successful year under the guidance of Brother C. J. Gattone; as usual, this was due to the hard work and dedication of the officers and representatives, and the cooperation offered by the administration, faculty, and student body. The Council started in early August in planning the events which would take place during the school year: Freshman Overnight, Christmas Food Drive, and Crusaderfest are only a few of the happenings which livened things up Around Rice. All in ali, it WAS a very good year.

In order to be a member, one must maintain a 3.4 G.P.A. and be recommended by three faculty members. The main activities of the N,H,S. are to provide tutoring for students and to usher at school functions. Around Rice, helping out takes many forms, whether it be using up excess energy to help out the school in its need for a new roof, exercising some veins to give up a pint of blood, or giving some intellectual exercise to grammar school students in need of help in reading and math. Brother Corrigan and Brother Devane are responsible for the running of our tutoring program for students from St. Charles Lwanga School every Tuesday in conjunction with some Mother McAuley students and Brother Rice students (about 55 in ali). CAL.M. - the Chicago Area Lay Movement - has enjoyed great popularity here for the past 15 years. A newcomer on the scene of helping out was the Walk for Brother Rice, sponsored by Mr. Antos, whose purpose was to raise funds for some badly-needed roof repairs while getting some exercise and having fun. The Blood Drive, sponsored by Brother Corrigan through the Religion classes, aids the Beverly Blood Bank in its quest for donors, while insuring Brother Rice students who participate as well as their families with regard to any blood needs they may have in the next year.

Around Rice, a number of students, under the guidance and direction of Miss Murphy, gained experience in the fine art of taking pictures which were used at times by both the newspaper and the Crusader. Many were relatively inexperienced in the various procedures which go into the production of a successful print; next year, hopefully, much more of their work will be in evidence.

CRUSADER '80 MAKES IT WITH SMALLEST STAFF IN THEIR HISTORY
Bro. Coleman points out a problem in layout to Mike Knar.
Around Rice, there's something happening almost all the time. Keeping up with so much activity is the almost impossible job of the Crusader. Moderated by Brother Coleman and co-edited by Mike Knar and Arkadiusz Smigielski, the chief difficulty encountered was the fact that most of the work in the Second Semester had to be done by the two editors, which was an impossible task done very well. Next year's book will hopefully have a larger staff of seniors to ease the burden.

HOMECOMING 79 .
As usual, Brother Rice's Homecoming Week was packed with excitement. Occurring in the last week of October, Homecoming Week featured open gyms, movies, grub day, the Walkathon, and, of course, the traditional Rally. Upperclassmen also elected the 1979 Homecoming Court.
On November 6, the Football Crusaders saw their last-quarter drive fall short as they lost to St. Francis DeSales 7-2.
However, on Sunday Night, the upperclassmen put defeat behind them as they enjoyed the "Shangri-La" atmosphere of the Homecoming semi-formal. Music was provided by "Freewheelin' " for this memorable night put together by Mike Gorman and his hardworking committee.

The Fall, 1979, production of PIPPIN proved to be a great success. With the combined efforts of Mother McAuley and Brother Rice students, the play produced record breaking crowds. The production, under the guidance of Brother Dogan, was a musical about a young man, Pippin (Dave Heilmann), who tries to find his life. "HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS" STARS JUNIORS AND SOPHOMORES
52 Spring Dance
On Saturday evening, May 3, 1980, the Brother Rice gym was the site of the annual Spring Dance. The theme this year, decided by the "underclass" Dance Committee, was "Hollywood Nights." This was a well-attended function; the Juniors and Sophomores and their dates danced to the music of Rooster as they soaked up the Hollywood atmosphere provided by the Dance Committee in the form of posters of the stars, the traditional nightclub atmosphere, and many of the sights of the gym and pool corridor. The end result promises great things ahead for next year's committee.
THE DANCES BEFORE THE DANCE
SAWDUST DANCES
Sawdust Dances by definition are dances where Freshmen and some Sophomores can show off, hopefully meet a member of the opposite sex, but most of all to listen to good music. This year, bands like Toys, and M&R RUSH, "hit" Rice. Also Chicago's own PEZBAND played at Rice, which was a very popular event. The dances seem to be very popular and will always remain in the memories of Rice's students.

LITURGIES
As in past year, liturgies have been an integral part of the school curriculum. They have shown, as usual, that Brother Rice exists not only as an academic community but also as a spiritual community as well. Four Masses were celebrated by the entire student body, while Father Hilger celebrated daily Mass in the school chapel during Lent and after Easter. Around Rice, liturgies brought a deeper sense of unity and put into concrete form the reason for our existence as a Catholic high school.

Around Rice this year, without a doubt, one of the largest events to take place was the annual Open House for eighth-graders and their parents. CLOCKWISE FROM RIGHT: Teams and actlvities manned displays designed to attract interested observers. TRIPPING TOWARDS SNOW, SUN, AND SOUND
Trips are becoing a long-standing tradition Around Rice. This year proved to be no exception, as the travelling Crusaders journeyed about the country; some winter sportsmen, led by Brother McDonald, headed for the ski slopes of Park City, Utah, over the Christmas vacation. Others sought a warmer climate over the Easter break as they invaded the "tropical" paradise of Hawaii, with its surf, scuba diving, sun-worshipping and discos. Brother Vorlick headed this group. Meanwhile, the Band finished off a year of preparations as they winged their way to Orlando, Florida, the week after Easter. Their concert tour included performances in Disney World, Sea World, and Circus World. Between parades and concerts, the Band managed to come back, like their other traveling counterparts, with disgusting tans, tired bodies, and lots of memories.

COSPONSORS DANCE-ATHON FOR CANCER SOCIETY
On Saturday, April 19, 1980, a Dance Marathon was held in the Brother Rice Gym for the benefit of the American Cancer Society. Two hundred students from Brother Rice and Mother McAuley danced from 11 :00 A.M. until 11 :00 P.M. to the music of Medallion, Rogue, and the Bift City Band, as well as various D.J. and Disco spots and contests. Food and refreshments were provided by many local merchants, who also donated prizes for the various contests throughout the day. In addition to having a lot of fun, the marathon and its associated activities were able to raise almost $4000 for Cancer research.

The money raised will be used for various Student Council activities.

VARSITY PROVES ALL DOUBTS WRONG
In past years, the Brother Rice Football squads have always provided great excitement for their many fans. This year was no different, as the Varsity pounded its way into third place in the Catholic League with a 3-2 record (5-5 overall). Under the leadership of Coach Mitchell for the fifteenth year, the Crusaders continued in state contention until their last game, losing a heartbreaker to St. Rita. Characteristic of this year's team was its unrelenting defense, which allowed an average of only six points per game.

To our dismay Rita got the ball back, and with 49 seconds left they brought the ball into the end zone, to the accompaniment of dismayed silence on the sidelines. The 49 seconds remaining were not enough for a touchdown rally. In spite of this disappointing ending, the team still kept fighting until the last second of the last quarter of the last game.

1- cSHMEN AND SOPHOMORES MAKE FIRST IMPRESSIONS LAST
There were mixed results in the two non-varsity football teams this year. The Sophomore team rolled to first place in the Catholic League with a record of 5-2. The Freshman Team, however was not quite as fortunate, finishing the year in fourth place, with a 2-4-1 record. However, talent from both teams should promise a quite successful future varsity roster.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAM FINISHES A STRONG SEASON
CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Dzwierzynski fends off some opposition. Instructions from Bro. Schul. O'Connor and Neville pacing the packl Andrasco shows what Sophomores are made of.
This year's Cross-Country Team, under the direction of Coach Brother Schul and assistant coach Brother Samp, had one of its finest seasons ever. Led by Captains Jim Dzwierzynski and Rich Eber, the Cross-Country Crusaders ran to a season record of 7-2. This placed them 4th in the Catholic League; they then went to the I.H.S.A. Districts and stunned everyone with a second-place finish. In the I.H.S.A. Sectionals, the Crusaders fared 4th, thus eliminating them from further competition; but this showing was the closest of any Cross-Country Team at Brother Rice to qualify a team downstate.
Both Captains, Jim Dzwierzynski and Rich Eber, were honored as Catholic League All Stars.
The Sophomore and Freshman Teams both worked hard to imitate their Varsity counterparts, and were rewarded with successful seasons also.

Senior Frank Brooks was voted MPV in the Catholic League, as well as being the first Brother Rice student to have won the Chicago Tribune's "Athlete of the Week" award. In addition, the Coach, Brother J. R. McDonald, was voted Coach of the Year for his efforts in leading the team through their impressive season. The J-V Water Polo Team followed in the tracks of their older teammates, winning the Frosh-Soph Catholic League competition with a 22- 2 record. Adding their coaching efforts to those of Br. Leading the Varsity offensive attack was center-forward Bob Loncar with four hat-tricks, along with halfback Rob McGowan. Defending the Crusader goal was the combined job of senior Bill Gallagher and junior Bob Mazur, both of whom showed tremendous talent. Although the Varsity did not finish as well as they had hoped with a 9- 11-2 record, they still dominated over some of the other top-ranked Catholic League teams, in addition to blanking out public league Romeoville 4-0. A promising Sophomore Team had a 17-4-3 record, which promises great things for next year.

The Varsity displayed its true form in winning the South Section, rolling to an impressive 10-2 record and a League high of 75 points.
