.We cannot imagine life without computers. We have to thank Charles Babbage and other computer geeks who tried and tried in order to get us to where we are today.

We can divide all type of computers to 10 categories. Memory. There are a lot of terms can be found over the internet related to computer. keyboard. Personal Computer (PC) Desktop Laptop Personal Digital Assistants(PDAs) Workstation Server Mainframe Minicomputer Supercomputer . But their is a significant difference how people or organizations use computes for their usage. mouse and screen to display output. All type of computer have processor.A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a list of instructions.

. size. and intended to be operated directly by an end user. and capabilities make it useful for individuals. with no intervening computer operator. People generally relate this term with Microsoft¶s Windows perating system. Personal computers generally run on Windows.Personal Computer (PC) : A personal computer (PC) is a computer whose original sales price. Mac or some version of Linux operating system.

Desktop computers comes in different form vertical tower cases to small form factor. .Desktop: Desktop computer is just another version of Personal Computer intended for regular use from a single use. A computer that can be fit on a desk can also be called as desktop.

Laptop contains all the components of computer but all these are optimized for mobile users.Laptop: Laptop computer . Laptop¶s are generally small mobile computers run on a single main battery or from an external power supply that will served as to run the laptop as well as charge the battery. Laptop or Notebook all are same. .

intranets or extranets . Newer PDAs also have both color screens and audio capabilities. web browsers. Many PDAs can access the Internet. enabling them to be used as mobile phones (smartphones).Personal Digital Assistants(PDAs): A personal digital assistant (PDA) is a handheld computer. also known as small or palmtop computers. or portable media players.

Workstation: A computer that has a more power resources like Processing Power. engineering simulation results such as for computational fluid dynamics. animation and rendering of images. Workstations are often optimized for displaying and manipulating complex data such as 3D mechanical design. Memory and additional capabilities to perform special task refers to as workstation. . and mathematical plots.

e-mail servers. A server application is a computer program that accepts connections in order to service requests by sending back responses. Examples of server applications include web servers. and file servers.Server: A server computer is a computer dedicated to running a server application. . database servers.

. such as consumer statistics. and financial transaction processing. Mainframes are mainly used by large organizations for critical applications.Mainframe: In early days of computing Mainframes are big computers that can fill the entire room or entire floor. ERP.

Minicomputers are more powerful but still compatible version of a personal computer. .Minicomputer: Minicomputers are lie between the Mainframe computer and small Personal Computers. Minicomputers also refereed to Mid-Range Servers.

often in several senses: highest computation rate. largest memory. among existing general-purpose computers at any given time. Predominantly. . machines designed to perform numerical calculations at the highest speed that the latest electronic device technology and the state of the art of computer architecture allow.Supercomputer: A computer which. the term refers to the fastest ³number crunchers. or highest cost.´ that is. is superlative.

Wearable : Wearable computers are computers that are worn on the body. eyes or attention are actively engaged with the physical environment . and health professionals have all incorporated wearable computers into their daily operations. Wearable computers are especially useful for applications that require computational support while the user¶s hands. military. health monitoring systems. Government organizations. information technologies and media development. voice. They have been applied to areas such as behavioral modeling.

The first generation computers occupied the space of an entire room. but the present day ones can fit into the palm. . There are mainly five generation of computers.

also very expensive to afford. Input was based on punched card and output on printouts.First Generation Computers In the first generation computers vacuum tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums for memory were used. . They could solve only one problem at a time. These computers were very large and generated a lot of heat. Their work is based on the cryptic binary language to perform the operations.

At this time high level programming languages were developed . They could understand the symbolic language and specific instructions given by the programmers in words. faster and cheaper than their predecessors.Second Generation Computers In second generation computers transistors replaced the vacuum tubes making the computers smaller.

Miniaturized transistors were kept on silicon chips which enhanced their efficiency and speed. These computers have keyboard and monitor for input and output and these could perform many applications at a time. .Third Generation Computers Integrated circuit was a drastic change in the third generation computers. They became smaller and cheaper because of which many people could afford.

GUI and handled devices also made the usage of computers easy . the integrated circuits were built into a single chip due to which they became more efficient and smaller.Fourth Generation Computers These are present day computers. Other devices like mouse. In the fourth generation computers.

Fifth Generation Computers .
