Mayor pro-tem Marvin Peeples steps down, but will remain on council
By Chris Buchanan News editor Councilman Marvin Peeples stepped down from his positions as Mayor ProTem effective immediately at Wednesday’s called meeting of the Nahunta City Council. Peeples did not give a reason for the decision to resign from the position, but said that he will remain on the council as a regular member. In a unanimous vote, the council agreed to appoint the council’s newest member, Robert Thomas, to the position. Peeples said he is also stepping down from his position with the Southeast Georgia Regional Commission of which he has been a member for over 15 years, he said. During the meeting Thomas also brought up a non-agenda item regarding several unissued warrants since 2008. Thomas said that the oversight has cost the

Thomas indirectly blamed Mayor Ronnie Jacobs who has told the council that he is in charge of day-to-day operations at previous meetings. During the meeting the council also requested that city clerk Angela Wirth look up all payments made to The Express since January for ads and legals.

Rivers Alive cleanup conflicts with deer season opening day
By Chris Buchanan News editor About 35 volunteers from around the area came out to help clean up one of the area’s most valuable natural resources on Saturday as part of the annual Rivers Alive event on the Satilla River. This year, one of the main locations for cleanup was the Satilla River Bridge in Atkinson which had the second highest number of volunteers for the event at 16. The river bridge on 121 between Brantley and Pierce counties had 14 volunteers and the Woodbine cleanup site had 5. Bill Brown who helped at the 121 location said that numbers would have likely been higher if the event hadn’t fallen on the first day of hunting season. According to event organizer Alisha Carter, the number of volunteers has remained fairly steady with last year. Though the exact amount of trash collected was not yet available, last year’s cleanup netted about 3 tons with as many volunteers participating according to Carter. The event is hosted annually by the Department of Natural Resources Adopt-a-River Program at different rivers around the state including the Satilla. The event is also spon-

Students learn about emergency bus exit
As students hopped from the back of their school bus on a brisk Tuesday morning, they were also learning a procedure that may one day save their lives. Behind Hoboken Elementary School, a randomly selected busload of children learned the bus exit procedure in the event of an emergency as part of Bus Safety Awareness week. According to transportation director Wiley Crews, each school in the system ran at least one drill this week. HES ran the scenario each morning.
