Descriptive Writing—The Turtle

After reading chapter 3 from The Grapes of Wrath, you must

write your own ending to the chapter. What do you imagine happens to
the turtle? Your response must be at least A PAGE AND A HALF,
DOUBLE-SPACED. Your writing must be Times New Roman, 12 pt
font. You may include an original and creative title. Remember that
you are trying to write descriptively, so use specific nouns and rich
adjectives. It is not a bad idea to copy the style of Steinbeck. He uses
very specific nouns, such as: “The barley beards slid off his shell…” Not
just weeds that fell on him, but ‘barley beards.’ He also uses beautiful
and rich adjectives, like: “His horny beak was partly open, and his
fierce, humorous eyes, under brows like fingernails…” His beak is
horny and partly open, he has fierce but still humorous eyes, and his
brows are shaped like fingernails. We get an amazing visual because of
the nouns and adjectives he chose to paint his picture. Make sure your
story is creative and somewhat realistic. You will have Tuesday,
September 28th and Wednesday, September 29th to finish this
assignment. We will be sharing our responses and we will vote as a
class on which ending we think is the best one. The winner, if it’s not
Steinbeck, will not only prove to be a wonderfully descriptive writer,
but will also earn TWO Schrute bucks!
