SEMINAR ON

BARCODE
PRESENTED BY

SRIDHAR KEDAR MANDI

BME-IV ; ROLL NO-000511201004
What is barcode?

they are just a different way of

encoding numbers and letters by using
a combination of bars and spaces of
varying widths.
HOW BARCODES ARE
READ?
Barcodes are read by
sweeping a small spot of
light across the printed
barcode symbol. Your eyes
only see a thin red line
emitted from the laser
scanner
TERMINOLOGY

BAR- The darker, non reflective element of a Bar Code

SPACE-The lighter, reflective element of a Bar Code
INTER-CHARACTER GAP-The space between the bars or spaces
START CHARACTER-A special pattern of bars and spaces used to
identify the beginning of a Bar Code symbol
STOP CHARACTER-A special pattern of bars and spaces used to
identify the end of a Bar Code symbol
CHECK DIGIT- A calculated character included within the Bar Code
for error detection
SYMBOLOGY: AN
EASY DEFINITION

Symbology is considered a language in barcode

technology. The actual technique of encoding the
bars and spaces a number of technical
specifications or characteristics define and
separate one symbology from another.
SYMBOLOGIES

1.Continuous code and discreate code

2. Two-width vs. many-width

3.Quiet zone,start /stop character and check

digit
SOME SYMBOLOGIES

CODE 39 UPC-A Interleaved 2 of 5 CODE 128 ISBN

CODE 39(1)

Code 39 (also known as 3 of

9 bar code) is a barcode
symbology that can encode
letters (A through Z), digits
(0 through 9) and a handful
of special characters like
the % sign.
CODE 39(2)

Each character is
composed of 9
elements,5 bars and 4
spaces
Bars and spaces have
2 widths
Of the 9 elements ,3
are wide and 6 are
narrow
UPC-A

UPC-A encodes 11 digits

of numeric (0 through
9) data along with a
trailing check digit, for
a total of 12 digits of
bar code data.
INTERLEAVED 2 OF 5

Each data character is

composed of 5 elements
either 5 bars or 5 spaces
Bars and spaces have 2
widths
Of the 5 elements ,2 are
wide and 3 are narrow
CODE 128

Bars and spaces have 4

different widths(4-level code)
Code 128 is very compact
and results in a dense symbol
ISBN

for a 13 digit ISBN, prefix:

978 or 979 (indicating the
industry; in this case, 978
denotes book publishing)
the group identifier,
(language-sharing country
group)
the publisher code
the item number, (title of the
book)
a checksum character or check
digit.
THERE ARE THREE BASIC
TYPES OF BARCODE
SCANNERS—FIXED,
PORTABLE BATCH, AND
PORTABLE WIRELESS
Fixed scanners Portable batch scanners

WIRELESS PORTABLE SCANNERS

HOW DO SCANNERS
WORK?
FIXED SCANNERS

Fixed scanners remain attached to their host

computer and transmit one data item at a
time as the barcode is scanned
PORTABLE BATCH
SCANNERS

Portable batch scanners are hand-held

battery operated readers which store data in
memory for uploading to the host at a
different time
WIRELESS PORTABLE
SCANNERS

When you need to collect information at a

remote location, and need the information
immediately, a wireless solution is the
perfect one
BARCODE BENEFITS
REPRESENT UNIQUE IDENTITY OF A PRODUCT
Fast and accurate data collection:
6 times as fast as typist and error rate is reduce from 1 in 300(key
data entry) to 1 in 3 million
LABOUR SAVINGS BY AVOIDING MANUAL SYSTEM
Improved management:
Better decision making
Faster access to information
