This Sustainable Livelihoods Framework has been developed to ensure that a holistic view on

poverty is obtained. This is by placing people and their priorities at the centre of the development

process. The combination of the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach to Farming Systems in

Muranga district, through the integration of the Dairy Goat into the existing Mixed Farming

System, by Smallholder farmers is a crucial step to ensure sustainability. Apart from the benefits

derived from nutritional improvement, this framework ensures an increase in the farmer’s asset

base. Soil and water conservation on the farm will be attained through the recycling of farm

resources (manure use as opposed to inorganic fertilizer use and growing of Napier grass strips

across the slope to prevent soil erosion). Methodology for the framework mainly depends on

consensus building and participatory approaches, giving the farmers the first opportunity to

express their interests as regards this framework. The framework also considers a major

marketing strategy both in the short-run period as well as in the long-run period.
