DNRE NEEDS CITIZEN INPUT
FROM REGIONAL ADVISORS
MICHIGAN — The Department of
Natural Resources and Environment
needs help managing deer herds.
The DNRE is accepting applications
for membership on its three Regional
Deer Advisory Teams.
With the adoption of the Michigan
Deer Management Plan in May,
the DNRE is committed to forming
advisory teams for the Upper
Peninsula, Northern Lower Peninsula
and Southern Lower Peninsula.
Members of the teams will be made
up of individuals or representatives
of groups with a direct connection
to deer-related issues in the region.
The advisory teams will provide input
directly to DNRE’s Wildlife Division.
Interested parties need to be able
to advise wildlife division staff on
regional deer management issues,
assist in communications with the
public and attend two meetings a
year. Applicants should make sure
they meet the requirements for
membership and are able to fulfill
their responsibilities.
Applications are due Dec. 14.

(NewsUSA) - For many Americans,
colder weather means seasonal
decorations and holiday baking -;
but if you’re one of those who set out
gourds and holly or cookies for Santa,
you might be opening your home to
some unwanted guests.
“Mice, rodents, spiders and other
pests find their way into homes by
hiding in boxes of holiday decorations
that have been stored in attics,
basements and garages since last
season,” says Missy Henriksen,
vice president of public affairs for
the National Pest Management
Association (NPMA). “They create
homes in these undisturbed items
and then find new places to infest
once these boxes are moved into
family living quarters.”
The holiday season may also bring out
pantry pests, which make themselves
at home in pantry foods like flour,
cereal, dry pasta, spices, nuts and
dried fruit, as well as in decorations
made from dried flowers and
potpourri. The most common pantry
pests are beetles, ants, weevils and
Indian meal moths.
So, what can you do to deter
unwelcome holiday guests? The
NPMA offers the following tips:
* Store seasonal decorations in
airtight containers. Items like dried
foliage, potpourri and Indian corn
should be carefully stored in the
off-season. Keep them in a dry
environment, such as a closet or
office, and unpack them outside.
* Inspect fresh decorations before
you bring them indoors. Look over
wreaths, Christmas trees and
garlands to make sure you’re not
bringing insects into your home.
* Store food properly. All food
should be stored in plastic or glass
containers with sealed lids. Keep
cabinets, pantries and countertops
clean and free of crumbs.
* Examine pantry items before you
use them. Check packages before you
bring them home from the store. Never
buy any item that appears damaged.
Throw out expired ingredients. If you
have any ingredients that haven’t
been used in the past year, inspect
them before use.

professional. They will know the
best way to treat an infestation. For

and marinated meats -- the key
to these easy shortcuts. Here are
Gunn and Miniati’s top 10 kitchen
tips and tricks for cooking delicious
and easy meals at home, without
compromising quality or resorting to
the drive-through:
1) Use prepared sauces, from
marinaras to curries. Add vegetables
or meats and simmer, or toss sauces
with couscous or pasta.
2) Add everyday superfoods, like
canned beans or pre-cooked lentils,
to soups or salads, or serve them
over rice.
3) Pick up a fully cooked rotisserie
chicken. Use the leftovers in wraps or
soups.
4) Perk up any meal with fresh
herbs. Add fresh basil to a simple
pasta dish, cilantro to plain rice, or
rosemary to roasting potatoes.
5) Toss a healthy salad in minutes
using washed and bagged salad.
6) Salad dressings do double-duty
as fast and flavorful marinades for
chicken or meats.
7) Transform boxed meals such as
rice pilaf or mac-n-cheese by adding

8) Put an end to greasy pizza
delivery. Use ready-made dough to
