à GULP AND GASP is a play which falls into the dramatic genre of a melodrama.
à A melodrama is a play where the character behave in an extreme emotional way, with the
bad character being very bad and the good character being very good. Here, the antagonist or
villain is Lord Septic who is cruel, evil and greedy. He is assisted by his slimy little servant, a
bully who grovels for a living. The protagonist is Rose who is a pure, young, pretty and blind
damsel in distress who is a victim of Lord Septic·s bad deeds. The hero is Percy who is
handsome, brave and squeaky clean. In a melodrama, the good will be rewarded and the wicked
will be punished. There is a clear distinction between good and evil. This play is performed like a
pantomime with much exaggeration, play of words and fooling around. Much of the humour
comes from puns or confused language. participate by responding appropriately to each dramatic
scene. There is a lot of entertainment, laughter and rowdiness. In the script, there are signs
saying: GULP,GASP,CHEER,BOO,HISS. The audience is expected to
GGulp and Gasp is an interesting drama of two villains, a blind preety girl
a and a dashing hero.

GThe drama begins drama by introducing us to the villain of the piece,


Lord Septic.

GLord Septic is described as a rich but greedy owner of railway and


factories.
He does not pay his workers a fair wage and he does not protect them
from harm either.

GAn example of his greedy and cruel nature is highlighted when Rose tells
Percy how she became blind, as a result of working at Lord Septic ¶s
match factory.
In order to make more profit, Lord Septic did not bother to ensure that
the matches his factory made were safe and so, his match factory caught
fire.
