GIST mUAL ENCAMPMENT

NOVEMBER 10TH-14TH, 2010

Furnace Creek & Stovepipe Wells, CA

DEATH VALLEY '49ERS STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The purpose of the Death Valley '4gers Non-Profit Organization

is to Promote Understanding and Appreciation of Death Valley and its History

The Death Valley '4gers are an all-volunteer non-profit organization that seeks to expand public awareness of Death Valley as a highly valued national resource and recreational area protected and preserved by the National Park Service and others for the use and enjoyment of present generations.

The aim of the '4gers is to foster appreciation of Death Valley as a rare desert environment having unique natural and cultural histories, which played an important role in the settlement of the west and the addition of California to the union.

Special recognition is given to the California-bound pioneer wagon parties of 1849-50 whose indomitable will to survive and persevere through the ordeal of that winter serves as an enduring example of the hardy spirit of all Americans who traveled far searching for new and better lives. The Death Valley '4gers sponsor the Annual Encampment each November to celebrate this pioneer spirit and this special place called Death Valley.

Death Valley' 4gers 61 ST Encampment Program

Welcome

PBB8IDENT'8 WELCOM.E

It is an honor to serve as '4gers president in 2010 and it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 61 st Encampment of the Death Valley vlvers,

The opening sentence of the Death Valley '4gers Statement of Purpose says we are an "".all volunteer organization seeking to expand public awareness of Death ValIey." The '4gers are a diverse group but we all share a love of Death Valley and we look forward to the Encampment each year.

. When you buy your $35 membership, which is your pass to all Encampment events, you receive a program. I suggest you study it and mark events you want to attend.

Some highlights are the Death Valley '4gers Invitational Western Art Show now under the leadership of Phee Sherline and artist Bill Goodman. This show is one of the oldest on the western art circuit. The Vendor Show, newly chaired by Barbara M idlikoski, promises new products and vendors. Stovepipe Wells is the location of many events apart from those III Furnace Creek. Needlework, Wood-carving and Photography Contests are always exciting.

Look for membership booth locations in Furnace Creek and Stovepipe Wells and tell your friends where they are. Wear your membership badge at all times. It is your proof of admission and shows you are supporting '4ger efforts toward promoting and protecting Death Valley. Also, when you see the people wearing the sturdy Boss of the Plains hat ask them about becoming an active Death Valley '4ger.

With my warmest regards and I hope you are having a great time.

Death Valley' 4ger President 2010

Welcome once again to another exciting Encampment in Death Valley National Park. Your National Park awaits you to enjoy its many charms and challenges!

I've finished my first year at Death Valley and look forward to this year's encampment and seeing all of the friends that I made last year. I know that you are looking forward to that as well.

We hope you notice and enjoy the improvements that we've made over the past year as a benefit of the American Recovery and Rehabilitation Act and park entrance fees. The Scotty Castle and Ubehebe Crater Roads are much safer and easier to drive, the Cooke House at Scotty's has been rebuilt, restoring the historic scene, and a new park film is well underway. Several projects that will reduce our impact on the environment are under construction including installation of photovoltaic systems throughout the park, and providing much needed insulation in park buildings.

A program that you support and that gives us all a great sense of excitement is the Death Valley ROCKS program, which helps kids make lasting connections to the outdoors and to our parks. That program has doubled in size this year, allowing us to serve almost 300 fifth through eighth graders from the region in a camping and educational experience in the park. Another 300 school kids were served during a one day field trip to the park. Your generous donations help to make that possible.

Please let us know if we can do anything to help make your visit more enjoyable. I invite you to join me in the critical task of preserving and protecting our parks for this and future generations while helping our visitors to learn about the wonders of the world around them and the history that brought us all here. Participating in the 4ger Encampment is a great way to carry out that mission at Death Valley National Park.

Enjoy!

Now college entry is a goal for most students and degrees have been received in a wide assortment of fields, and 38 scholarships have been awarded since this program began.

Outreach Program: Gifts received will help a student obtain a better education by providing middle school children the opportunity to learn about the wonders of Death Valley through the "Outreach Program" known as "Death Valley Rocks".

Contributions to the Educational Programs may be made at any membership booth or to any '4ger membership salesperson. Thanks to all of you for your assistance in helping these young people.

Please note your donation on your membership application specifying "Educational Programs" .

Death Valley' 4gers Invitational Western Art Show

Thursday 9:00 - 4:30 PM through Sunday Noon Visitor Center Parking Area

Painting by Bill Goodman, Art Show co-chairman.

Western art is a piece of Amer-ica. No other place in the world boasts the history and vistas of the west. They have been celebrated in art since the early 1800s. This show is part of that tradition.

As you stroll through the show, think how nice a painting would look over your sofa or dining room table.

DUST, DOOM AND DESTRUCTION: THE FILMS OF DEATH VALLEY; Death valley has a very unique film history. Early classic silent films like Wanderer of the Wasteland (1923) and Greed (1909) gave way to science fiction films in the 1950's and 60's. In the past few decades Zabriskie Point (1970), Star wars (1977), and The Sum of All Fears (2002) have been filmed here. We will see historic photographs from many of the films working on location and learn the inside stories of some very daring and independent filmmakers. MSR

ast paced and intriguing of fact and imagination, B. Cooper -aftermath- is re to engage fans of eculative fiction, and decades-long mystery of the daring criminal D. B. Cooper. The story is told in taut, muscular prose style with hard boiled attitude. The book has a good sense of humor, an appreciation for the ironies of the world. ,E¥ (8~~OON) AND DESTRUCTION: THE FILMS OF DEATH VALLEY; Death valley has a very unique film history. We will see historic photographs from many ofthe films working on location and learn the inside stories of some very daring and independent filmmakers. MSR

VC AUDITORIUM: DEATH IN THE DESERT

Ever since America discovered the desert, images of death have been a part of the story. These are tales of death, near death and survival. From the strange journey of Hootch's Skull to a man who died dancing in the desert. From the delirious last moments of a man who believes the sand is water to the tale of a donkey who took a prospector to the nearest spring. Fascinating, thought-provoking and inspiring, after viewing this film, you'll want to make sure your canteen is full! MSR

FOR AN AUTHENTIC OLD WEST VACATION, MOSEY ON DOWN TO DEATH VALLEY.

Standing in our streets reminiscent of the old West, you can almost hear the famous Twenty Mule Team pass by with another wagon full of borax. And there's so much to do here-golfing, horseback riding, swimming in our spring-fed pool, visiting our museum, and exploring this amazing three-million-acre playground, not to mention historical landmarks and natural wonders.
