WOMAN--HELLO, WELCOME BACK.

RISING FUEL PRICES ARE DRIVING UP THE COST OF GRAIN PRODUCTION AND IT IS GETTING TOUGHER AND TOUGHER FOR MILLIONS OF PEOPLE TO FEED THEIR FAMILIES. THE PAIN IS ESPECIALLY BAD IN ASIA, WHERE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE HAVE TO DEPEND ON RICE EVERY DAY. DAN RIVERS REPORTS FROM THAILAND: “IT'S A FOOD THAT'S A STAPLE FOR HALF THE WORLD AND ITS PRICE HAS GONE UP ABOUT 50% IN THE LAST YEAR. THE COST OF RICE IS SPIRALING OUT OF CONTROL WILL . THERE ARE WORRIES ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT. LAST YEAR THE UN'S WORLD FOOD PROJECT SHIPPED 383,000 POUNDS OF RICE TO 90 COUNTRIES. NOW OFFICIALS ARE FACING SOME TOUGH CHOICES. ” PAUL RISLEY---”WE ALWAYS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE FOOD FOR THE POOREST OF THE POOR. WHATWE ARE FINDING NOW IS THAT WE ARE EVEN BEING ABLE TO RASHIN THE FOOD SUPPLIES WE HAVE JUST FOR THE VERY POREST OF THE POOR.” RIVERS-- AND AS THE COST OF RICE GOES UP THERE ARE DARK PREDICTIONS OF POLITICAL INSTABILITY AND VIOLENCE AS PEOPLE FACE SHORTAGES OF THIS VITAL GRAIN. RISLEY--”WE ARE VERY CONCERNED IN PAKISTAN, IN BANGLADESH, AND IN AFGANISTAN WE HAVE ALREDY SEEN EVIDENCE OF WHEN IT WHEN HIGHER FOOD PRICES HIT SPECIFIC LOCAL AREAS THERE ARE OFTEN RIOTS THERE ARE CIVIL DISTRUBENCES. THERE IS GREAT CAUSE FOR CONCERN” RIVERS-- “SO WHAT'S CAUSING PRICES TO SPIKE? WELL IT'S COMPLEX. BAD WEATHER IN INDIA AND VIETNAM HAS DISSIMATED THE HARVEST. HIGH OIL PRICES HAVEN'T HELPED AND A SWITCH TO BIOFUELS FROM RICE IS ALSO HITTING SUPPLIERS. VIETNAM HAS BANNED RICE EXPORTS LEAVING THAILAND THE WORLD'S BIGGEST EXPORTER, SITTING ON AN EVER MORE VALUABLE ASSET. TEN YEARS AGO THIS PILE OF RICE WOULD HAVE BEEN WORTH TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS, BUT SINCE THEN THE PRICE OF RICE HAS GONE UP AND UP AND UP. BY THE BEGINNING OF LAST YEAR IT HAD DOUBBLED. BUT NOW, WITH THE RECENT SPIKE, THIS LOT IS WORTH A STAGGERING 5,300 BUCKS. IT'S NOW 500 DOLLARS A TON FOR EXPORT. ANALYSIST SAY THAT'S ONLY THE BEGINNING. VICHAI--“AND I THINK IT HAS TO GO UP TO 900 TO 1000 DOLLARS JUST TO CATCH UP WITH THE OIL PRICE.” RIVERS--“FOR THE URBAN POOR ACROSS ASIA THAT'S BAD NEWS. T HAS ALREADY NOTICED RICE ALONG WITH FUEL GETTING MORE EXPENSIVE. HE IS SEEKING MORE WORK AT THE LOCAL BOTTLING FACTORY JUST TO FEED HIS KIDS. (HE SAYS, “I'LL HAVE TO FIND MORE WORK. NOW I WORK BETWEEN SIX TO TEN DAYS A MONTH I'LL NEED TO ALMOST DOUBLE THAT) RICE PRICES IN THAILAND ARE REGULATED BY THE GOVERNMENT GIVING THE POOR SOME PROTECTION. SO IF PEOPLE HERE ARE FEELING IT IMAGEN WHAT'S GOING TO

.. DAN RIVERS CNN.HAPPEN IN PLACES LIKE AFGANISTAN.” . ANALYSISTS SAY THERE COULD BE FUTHER INSTABILITY AS PEOPLE SIMPLY TRY TO FEEL THERE RICE BOWLS. IF RICE PRICES CONTINUE TO RISE.
