Eternity in a Box

Sol Lewitt’s sculptural structures focused on the concept of the eternal grid, neutrality, and instruction. In this combination of pavilion and site alteration I have explored this pathway, looking into how the entire world may be seen as a grid network, with nodes that increase and decrease in size depending on relative perspective, and how instructions can be used to design a building and the process by which a sculpture is viewed.

The groundskeepers are given the primary duty of moving the main sculpture. While no specific sign or denotation says visitors may not also move the sculpture, many people will not realize they are allowed to. A general gist of ruling is laid out, through instruction and by the positioning of the concrete stands situated throughout the park. Each location is meant to evoke the feeling of a chess piece (standing guard to the entrance of the valley as a knight, standing out in the open as a rook, spiritually next to a tree as a bishop, or in minor positions at each end of the valley as pawns.) These rules though are open to being broken.
