The Human Resource Information System (HRIS) is the interaction between human resource management & information technology . HRIS is a software or online solution for the data entry, data tracking, and data information needs of the Human Resources, payroll, management, and accounting functions within a business. This system refers to the system of gathering , classifying , processing , recording and disseminating the information required for efficient & effective management of human resources in an organization .

HRIS Includes: (i) Recruitment Information : It includes the placement data bank , advertisement module , general recruitment & trainee recruitment data . (ii) Personnel Information : It includes employee information , transfer monitoring and increment & promotion details. (iii) Manpower Planning Information : It seeks to provide information that could assist human resource mobilization , career planning , succession planning & inputs for skill development . (iv) Training Information : It provides information for designing course material , arrange for need based training , cost analysis of training etc.

(v) Health Information System : This sub ² system provides information for maintenance of people . (vi) Appraisal Information : It deals with performance appraisal and merit rating information which serves as input for promotion. (vii) Payroll Information : It consists of information concerning wages , salaries , wage incentives , allowances etc.

Why HRIS ? Need for such a system arises due to several factors described below : a. Large organizations employ a large number of people. It becomes necessary to employ databased technology for tacking human resource problems. b. In a geographically dispersed company every office requires timely & accurate information for manpower management. c. Modern day compensation package is complex consisting of many allowances &deductions . So to maintain this HRIS is required. d. With the help of HRIS employee records & files can be integrated for decision making rather than record ² keeping.
