What's Up? Magazine is a publication for teens by teens who have been residents at the Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
If I don't write to empty my mind, Igo mad." -Lord Byron
Writing freely can make you feel good and have fun at the same time. It releases feelings and concerns. It entertains. It helps us to remember a time of the past or look to the future. It allows us to imagine ourselves in a place we cannot be or to mingle with interesting people we may never meet. It lets us escape. It builds us up. It allows us to create laughter, tears, and understanding. It provides wisdom. It shows us that we can accomplished something great all on our own.
Without grade, without order, without any constraint. This magazine was created to encourage everyone that no matter who you are or where you come from, you can write for any reason you want to and in any way that is best for you. And it will be awesome!
This publication was designed and compiled by The Library System of Lancaster County's What's Up with the Library? Program. Library staff travel to the Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center twice a month to encourage young residents to read, write, and enjoy the free services the public library has to offer.
Thank you to all who have participated in this publication! Miss Laura

This is the year
This is the year I stand on my own
This is the year I that I realized that I didn't have a true home
This is the year that I wiIl make myself known as the young man that I am This is the year to prove to myself, not the people that doubt
This is the year I will despise the people that hurt me
This is the year I will be 18
This is the year when life becomes reality to a man and not a dream This is the year I make my stand to do the best I can
This is the year I will not be coming back here because of those ignorant people
This is the year that I realized that the two people that said they loved me the most were both full of lies
This is the year I hope they die:
This is the year that I will not be told that I need those people This is the year I will not listen to those people if they tell me that
This is the year I will show people what those two people are all about This is the year IwilI end the madness of their games
This is the year I will not stand the abuse from him anymore
This year I will not watch her take an the unprescribed pills again This is the year I won't watch any of that anymore
This is the year I walked out the front door
This is the year I looked into his eyes and communicated to him just by looking at him
This is the year he said when wilI I see you again This is the year I told him I don't know
This is the year I have made my move
This is the year I had to lose him once again
• • •
Waking up with you on my mind or going to sleep thinking about you.
Knowing how you want to be loved and knowing your likes and dislikes.
Not being able to stay away from you too long ..
Feeling like I could die from the thought of losing you.
Always and forever.
And Love is,
More than a four letter word.
Poem and drawing by Joshua, 18
This is the year I turn 17
This is the year I stop servin' fiends

This is the year I stop poppin' pills This is the year it's all about bills
This is the year I do it legit This is the year ]' II never forget
