Message of the Pan-African Writers’ Day on the 25"
International African Writers Day
Today November 7" is the 25" international African Writers’ Day, a day set aside
by the African Union to salute and honour all African writers and writers of
African descent. On this occasion, the Steering Committee of the Pan African
Writers’ Association (PAWA) salutes all African, writers and writers of African
descent and urges them to continue the task of wielding literature as a weapon
for Africa's development. The day also marks the founding of PAWA on
November 7, 1989.
‘Today more than ever before, African writers must redouble their efforts to be
in the forefront of the struggle for African unity and common purpose in
addition to fighting for peace, enhanced and inclusive governance, human
rights, and social justice for Africans everywhere.
Today, the Steering Committee wishes to remind writers and their associations
that the mission of PAWA, which was boldly articulated at its founding is: to
strengthen the cultural and economic bonds between the people on the African
continent against the background of the continent’s acknowledged diverse but
rich cultural, political and economic heritage. It is the expectation of the
continent that its writers will continue to uphold this message.
Long live African writers
Long live African literature as a weapon of struggle and a tool for development.
