Take your goal and divide it into meaningful. You willingly work extra hours. make your plans. You are known and liked by the national corporation. Now. with your feet firmly planted on the ground. You mop floors. You become the irreplaceable employee. You network with other store managers and store owners. You become a shift supervisor and then assistant manager and then manager. You volunteer to do the jobs that average employees avoid. Then. It is doing the optional. It is the restaurant manager who visits every table after every meal.

you give yourself a competitive advantage over average workers. the workplace is not a proving ground. your bosses will acknowledge. some see it as a comfortable meeting place where friends co-mingle in a commercial environment. appreciate and reward your hard work. you embrace. You buy six properties. There are those who talk accomplishment. and create a family financial empire. you can do. learn and accomplish. pay off your debts. You don’t sit around sharing ignorance with your friends. You identity the leaders in your industry and you do what they are doing. they can find excuses for inaction. you are a tough. you think. You don’t turn a blind eye to anything. After the novelty wears off. You allow discontent among staff to fester. Through your example. 12 7 . some customer interest will wane. For the extraordinary. You can’t yawn and shrug your shoulders. Maybe the work ethics of some recruited staff do not match expectations. reality starts to kick in.Commit to Never Ending Improvement It’s fun and exciting to plan and open a business but after a few months. To keep to a steady course and strive toward excellence. If you need to find new suppliers and new employees and new ways to promote your products or services. Suddenly updating the website is no longer a priority. It gets easy to overlook the smudges on outgoing correspondence. You are the boss. you do that. average people quit and settle for mediocrity. Perhaps several vendors should not have been so highly recommended. It’s seems a small fact that the flowers in the beds outside the office are dead. With the slow creep of discouragement. You attend to the details. Ownership and management responsibilities are demanding. you may have to make improvements again and again. you are responsible for the energetic or toxic atmosphere in your workplace. second rate and quitting are not options. You maintain the standards.

You see litter and you pick it up. Everyone should be engaged in looking for ways to cut costs and rewarded for sharing their suggestions. You don’t need a private bathroom or reserved parking space. Think before you make major corporate purchases. 8 13 . Corporate frugality is a team effort. Get everyone involved. An effective manager sets the example for employees. Give yourself a day or two to consider the purchase and if you can still justify the item. No one likes a cheap person. Don’t be impulsive. You can eat in the company cafeteria. then buy it knowing that you will use it. Everyone will accept a leader who sacrifices along with the troops for the good of all concerned. You make money by generating revenue and by looking for ways to reduce the unnecessary. especially frivolity and waste.Be Frugal Employees understand that your company is in business to make money. Order pizza for the office. you choose a new challenge for yourself. If you have been neglecting your health. you follow up with your old clients and make the effort to reconnect. You have planned to make today and every day special. just do it. you sleep well with a feeling of accomplishment. today you will watch your diet and take a short walk.Make T oday Special You list and tackle your responsibilities head on. You make yourself tough by doing something that is personally difficult for you to do. If an employee has done an exceptional job. If you have been putting off making personnel changes. You must never allow yourself to fall into a depressing rut of sameness. Every day. Life doesn’t just happen to you. At the end of every day.

What catches your eye? Is it the layout of an ad or a retail floor plan or a combination of words or colors? Is it a new piece of equipment or a website? What do you see that is efficient or smart or high tech? Record your thoughts You aren’t just a person of action. You are exceptional. underline. you are probably still thinking about business. Review your notes. Make a habit of writing them down. When you aren’t at your desk working. highlight.Record Your Thoughts You will have lots of ideas. Circle. Have your paper and pen and pencil and marker available. 10 15 . You can’t help it. It is who you are. You are focused on success. You are always alert and aware and your subconscious mind is always churning out new ideas and new possibilities for increasing income or decreasing expenses. Your mind is focused on improving your business. You are a thinking person of action. Take some notes. cross out and expand your thinking.

Persist to Win You will be successful. 16 11 . give up. After eight miles. After six miles you are tired. You face a pile of papers on your desk. You respond to the first email. Any particular day may be tough and demand your best effort and concentration. but you take another step. you take a step and then a step. Keep trying. Do it knowing that what you are about to do may advance your cause only slightly or have no effect at all. with patience and honest hard work. It will never be over until you say that it is over. Or. Winners persevere and take another step. You pick up the next paper. You want to make ten cold calls today. suck it up and do it. It would be easy to find an excuse to stop and few average people would blame you. However. you win. To walk ten miles. You have twenty emails to answer. Be good. You make the first call. the rewards of persistence will burst forth or slowly emerge. Of this. You pick up the first paper and deal with it. you take another step. Take a deep breath. You will never give up. you are in pain. Get good. there is no doubt. Either way.

They are content to be promoted when someone in front of them is fired. Seventy percent of people are average. They are moving forward. The extraordinary person accepts the fact that the real economic protection for themselves. It isn’t always easy to try new things without proven guarantees. their willingness to change. Take the risk. Take the risk. You are alert and aware to problems. Get out now. their families and their futures lies in their self-reliance and. Find another job or start your own business You are alert and aware to opportunities. Research. Make an offer to buy the company. You are working for a poorly performing company. They delude themselves into believing that big companies will always be there to protect them. You love your job. often. Pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone may be difficult but it can also be exhilarating and profitable. Sadly. 18 13 .Risk Failure Average people are risk averse. Your suggestions for corrective action are ignored. everybody. many have learned otherwise.

there will be other walls blocking your path. Push over because all self-made successful people have been there. Partners and employees may disappoint you. You will lose a big deal. clients or patients will switch to your competitors. Climb over the wall. 14 19 . For no good reason. So. And. You need to climb over it. Without whining. You have hit the wall. This is the wall. you might be passed over for promotion. This is the price that you are being asked to pay. You may bang your knees and skin your knuckles. customers. second guessing or complaining. suck it up and do what you know you have to do to succeed in business. Pay the price. You will introduce products or services that will fall flat and cost you time and money. Others have gotten over that wall and you can learn from them. Get tough.Get Tough On your way to extraordinary. get ready and get tough. yes. The time to prove yourself is at hand. The world of business is not waiting anxiously for your amazing personal contribution. You are being tested.

you must seek change. Since you seek growth. Doing little with your life is much easier and safer than taking risks. Can you change your day and spend more time with your family? You must see yourself and your environment not only as it is. You seek the changes necessary to reach the better you so that you can play your part in being a better sportsperson and role model.
