Average people work forty hours a week. Plan to do what the average person has done once and do it again and again until you become a millionaire. Dream big. Set a goal right now to rise above the average and live an extraordinary life. Set a goal of working 20% more. You need the time and the resources to develop your individual potential and special talent. Average people buy one house. What you plan. or don’t plan. Average people watch twenty hours of television each week. These are your goals. 1 6 . so don’t be shy. Set a goal to watch ten hours and use the other ten hours more constructively. Write it down. Commit your mind and actions to do what it will take to succeed. hoping that this single investment will ensure a comfortable retirement. is where you’ll go.Set Goals You have one life. Plan for it. working fifty hours and using the extra income to invest.
You mop floors. Then. On the road to your future. You get a job at McDonald’s. divide your journey into short trips. with your feet firmly planted on the ground. You want to own several McDonald’s franchises. You learn the fast food business from the ground floor up and inside and out. You pick up litter in the parking lot. You willingly work extra hours. You are known and liked by the national corporation. You become the irreplaceable employee. clean rest rooms and empty grease traps. You react with an understanding smile when a child spills a milkshake. make your plans. achievable objectives. realistic. You volunteer to do the jobs that average employees avoid. many of the goals you set will seem ambitious. You confidently borrow the money to buy your first store. you invest in a second and third and fourth store. You become a shift supervisor and then assistant manager and then manager. Now. You network with other store managers and store owners.Divide and Conquer Initially. Take your goal and divide it into meaningful. You start by owning one. Reach for the stars. This is good. 7 2 .

Follow Through Follow through is the secret weapon of the highly successful businessperson. but every night. It is appreciating and respecting your customer. It is openly and honestly talking with a customer who has a problem and doing your best to correct it. It is doing the optional. It is always performing above and beyond expectations. It is the contractor who cleans up. It is the car salesperson or the real estate agent who doesn’t treat you like a one time opportunity but as a lifetime customer. It is making the customer feel special and important. not just at the end of a job. It is the florist who calls the week after the wedding. It is the restaurant manager who visits every table after every meal. 4 9 . It is the wow factor. It is bettering the standard.
solving customer complaints and soliciting new business. If you actually concentrate on working while you are at work. They are focused on avoiding criticism while waiting for their next paycheck. The business becomes incidental to the social. dealing with problem employees. Often. you embrace. the workplace is not a proving ground. Many average workers are clock watchers. What the average worker avoids. clean-up.Embrace the Hard Work You excel by not being an average worker. Rather. encouraging an individual to personal excellence. appreciate and reward your hard work. If you are working for the right company. some see it as a comfortable meeting place where friends co-mingle in a commercial environment. you give yourself a competitive advantage over average workers. Following The Action Principles®. You offer a quality product at a fair price. pay off your debts. You buy six properties. You appreciate your customers. Average people buy one house in the hope of a comfortable retirement. thoughtful. learn and accomplish. What others have done. You research. You find a way. You listen. You don’t sit around sharing ignorance with your friends. You find knowledgeable teachers and mentors.Don’t Complicate Matters Average people often complicate business matters because within those complications. you are a tough. Running a business is not complicated. 6 11 . you plan and you act. you can do. There are those who listen. and create a family financial empire. There are those who talk accomplishment. You identity the leaders in your industry and you do what they are doing. Becoming financially independent is not complicated. they can find excuses for inaction. you think. spiritual person of action.
You allow discontent among staff to fester. Maybe the work ethics of some recruited staff do not match expectations. Perhaps several vendors should not have been so highly recommended. You attend to the details. It’s seems a small fact that the flowers in the beds outside the office are dead. If you need to find new suppliers and new employees and new ways to promote your products or services. 12 7 . You are the boss. you may have to make improvements again and again. you are responsible for the energetic or toxic atmosphere in your workplace. You can’t yawn and shrug your shoulders. you do that. You maintain the standards. some customer interest will wane. For the extraordinary. Suddenly updating the website is no longer a priority. To keep to a steady course and strive toward excellence. After the novelty wears off. second rate and quitting are not options. You don’t turn a blind eye to anything. Through your example. average people quit and settle for mediocrity.Commit to Never Ending Improvement It’s fun and exciting to plan and open a business but after a few months. reality starts to kick in. With the slow creep of discouragement. It gets easy to overlook the smudges on outgoing correspondence. Ownership and management responsibilities are demanding.
Get everyone involved. Everyone should be engaged in looking for ways to cut costs and rewarded for sharing their suggestions. You see litter and you pick it up. You can eat in the company cafeteria.Be Frugal Employees understand that your company is in business to make money. then buy it knowing that you will use it. Corporate frugality is a team effort. An effective manager sets the example for employees. You don’t need a private bathroom or reserved parking space. 8 13 . You can fly coach. Think before you make major corporate purchases. especially frivolity and waste. No one likes a cheap person. Everyone will accept a leader who sacrifices along with the troops for the good of all concerned. Don’t be impulsive. You make money by generating revenue and by looking for ways to reduce the unnecessary. Give yourself a day or two to consider the purchase and if you can still justify the item.
Make T oday Special You list and tackle your responsibilities head on. Order pizza for the office. You embrace hard work. you sleep well with a feeling of accomplishment. If an employee has done an exceptional job. If you want to generate additional business. Every day. If you have been putting off making personnel changes. You have planned to make today and every day special. you follow up with your old clients and make the effort to reconnect. You make yourself tough by doing something that is personally difficult for you to do. bring a rose home for the wife and a movie for the kids. you choose a new challenge for yourself. just do it. You must never allow yourself to fall into a depressing rut of sameness. 9 14 . Life doesn’t just happen to you. At the end of every day. make the small effort to publicly praise him or her. If you have been neglecting your health. today you will watch your diet and take a short walk.
What catches your eye? Is it the layout of an ad or a retail floor plan or a combination of words or colors? Is it a new piece of equipment or a website? What do you see that is efficient or smart or high tech? Record your thoughts You aren’t just a person of action. You are a thinking person of action. Circle. You can’t help it. You are focused on success. cross out and expand your thinking. highlight. you are probably still thinking about business. Make a habit of writing them down. Review your notes. You are exceptional. It is who you are. Have your paper and pen and pencil and marker available. 10 15 . You are always alert and aware and your subconscious mind is always churning out new ideas and new possibilities for increasing income or decreasing expenses. When you aren’t at your desk working. Take some notes. underline.Record Your Thoughts You will have lots of ideas. Your mind is focused on improving your business.
You want to make ten cold calls today. with patience and honest hard work. To walk ten miles. give up. However. suck it up and do it. Either way. Keep trying. You have twenty emails to answer. Be good. Any particular day may be tough and demand your best effort and concentration. there is no doubt. you win. Get good. Or. You pick up the first paper and deal with it. Take a deep breath. the rewards of persistence will burst forth or slowly emerge. After six miles you are tired. Of this. You face a pile of papers on your desk. You respond to the first email. you take another step. but you take another step. After eight miles. It would be easy to find an excuse to stop and few average people would blame you. Winners persevere and take another step. you are in pain. Do it knowing that what you are about to do may advance your cause only slightly or have no effect at all. You pick up the next paper.Persist to Win You will be successful. You will never give up. It will never be over until you say that it is over. They spend what they make and have little if anything saved for investment. study. It is difficult for them to concentrate on doing their jobs. You are working for a poorly performing company. You love your job. Take the risk. It isn’t always easy to try new things without proven guarantees. If it were easy. Make an offer to buy the company. Sadly. everybody. You don’t ignore the warning signs. to face the unknown. Take the risk. They delude themselves into believing that big companies will always be there to protect them. Your boss at the flower shop announces that she will be retiring and selling the business. 18 13 . Your suggestions for corrective action are ignored. They will cling to the perceived safety of the status quo. plan and then take the risk. Get out now. The extraordinary person accepts the fact that the real economic protection for themselves. the average majority would do it. Research. Pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone may be difficult but it can also be exhilarating and profitable. their willingness to change.
This is the wall. suck it up and do what you know you have to do to succeed in business. 14 19 . Climb over the wall. So. The time to prove yourself is at hand. Partners and employees may disappoint you. You may bang your knees and skin your knuckles. customers. Without whining. Push over because all self-made successful people have been there. This is the price that you are being asked to pay. get ready and get tough.Get Tough On your way to extraordinary. second guessing or complaining. Get tough. For no good reason. there will be other walls blocking your path. You will lose a big deal. yes. you might be passed over for promotion. You need to climb over it. Others have gotten over that wall and you can learn from them. clients or patients will switch to your competitors. You have hit the wall. You will introduce products or services that will fall flat and cost you time and money. Pay the price. You are being tested. And. The world of business is not waiting anxiously for your amazing personal contribution.

You seek the changes necessary to reach the better you so that you can play your part in being a better sportsperson and role model. Since you seek growth. but also as it could and should be. Can you change your day and spend more time with your family? Can you change your standard lunch routine and take a walk? Can you volunteer to coach and mentor those behind you who are just learning the game? What are the possible consequences of not changing? Realize that many people don’t make plans because they don’t want to risk any change. You must see yourself and your environment not only as it is. but for there to be growth.Be the Valued Employee The status quo may be comforting. Doing little with your life is much easier and safer than taking risks. there must be change.

Your job as a business leader is to recognize potential.
it is naïve to believe anything except that you work for youself. Be prepared. If you are standing still. Economies are globalizing. You must know your industry. You may be saved by the action of others. 21 26 . In the real world of business. You may not. prepare yourself. Take responsibility for your own career. The Internet is changing everything.
