You need the time and the resources to develop your individual potential and special talent. so don’t be shy. hoping that this single investment will ensure a comfortable retirement. Average people watch twenty hours of television each week. or don’t plan. Dream big. Set a goal right now to rise above the average and live an extraordinary life. working fifty hours and using the extra income to invest. Set a goal of working 20% more.Set Goals You have one life. Set a goal to watch ten hours and use the other ten hours more constructively. is where you’ll go. you can simply write a page or a paragraph. stop to think about who you were. Keep writing and refining and living. Others are proud to call you friend. It is making the customer feel special and important.Follow Through Follow through is the secret weapon of the highly successful businessperson. It is the contractor who cleans up. It is the wow factor. It is the car salesperson or the real estate agent who doesn’t treat you like a one time opportunity but as a lifetime customer. It is bettering the standard. not just at the end of a job. but every night. It is appreciating and respecting your customer.

Many average workers are clock watchers. appreciate and reward your hard work. Running a business is not complicated. Average people buy one house in the hope of a comfortable retirement. you plan and you act.Don’t Complicate Matters Average people often complicate business matters because within those complications. You research. You identity the leaders in your industry and you do what they are doing.

You attend to the details. You allow discontent among staff to fester. It gets easy to overlook the smudges on outgoing correspondence. It’s seems a small fact that the flowers in the beds outside the office are dead. For the extraordinary. you may have to make improvements again and again. You are the boss. With the slow creep of discouragement. average people quit and settle for mediocrity. you are responsible for the energetic or toxic atmosphere in your workplace. If you need to find new suppliers and new employees and new ways to promote your products or services. To keep to a steady course and strive toward excellence. You can’t yawn and shrug your shoulders. Maybe the work ethics of some recruited staff do not match expectations. 12 7 .Commit to Never Ending Improvement It’s fun and exciting to plan and open a business but after a few months. second rate and quitting are not options. you do that. Suddenly updating the website is no longer a priority. some customer interest will wane. Perhaps several vendors should not have been so highly recommended. Ownership and management responsibilities are demanding. You maintain the standards. After the novelty wears off. You don’t turn a blind eye to anything. Through your example. reality starts to kick in.

You can fly coach. No one likes a cheap person. Don’t be impulsive. You make money by generating revenue and by looking for ways to reduce the unnecessary. Get everyone involved. 8 13 . You see litter and you pick it up. especially frivolity and waste. Everyone will accept a leader who sacrifices along with the troops for the good of all concerned.Be Frugal Employees understand that your company is in business to make money. You don’t need a private bathroom or reserved parking space. then buy it knowing that you will use it. Corporate frugality is a team effort. Everyone should be engaged in looking for ways to cut costs and rewarded for sharing their suggestions. Give yourself a day or two to consider the purchase and if you can still justify the item. An effective manager sets the example for employees. Think before you make major corporate purchases. You can eat in the company cafeteria.

just do it. Life doesn’t just happen to you. today you will watch your diet and take a short walk. you choose a new challenge for yourself. You have planned to make today and every day special.Make T oday Special You list and tackle your responsibilities head on. Order pizza for the office. If you have been neglecting your health. If you want to generate additional business. you follow up with your old clients and make the effort to reconnect. You make yourself tough by doing something that is personally difficult for you to do. Every day. If an employee has done an exceptional job. If you have been putting off making personnel changes. At the end of every day. You must never allow yourself to fall into a depressing rut of sameness.

Circle. you are probably still thinking about business. Have your paper and pen and pencil and marker available. You are a thinking person of action. It is who you are. What catches your eye? Is it the layout of an ad or a retail floor plan or a combination of words or colors? Is it a new piece of equipment or a website? What do you see that is efficient or smart or high tech? Record your thoughts You aren’t just a person of action. You are focused on success. underline. Take some notes. When you aren’t at your desk working. Review your notes. You are exceptional.Record Your Thoughts You will have lots of ideas. Your mind is focused on improving your business. You can’t help it. cross out and expand your thinking. 10 15 . highlight. Make a habit of writing them down. You are always alert and aware and your subconscious mind is always churning out new ideas and new possibilities for increasing income or decreasing expenses.

You face a pile of papers on your desk. Take a deep breath. Keep trying. It will never be over until you say that it is over. 16 11 . To walk ten miles. It would be easy to find an excuse to stop and few average people would blame you. You respond to the first email. there is no doubt. Get good. you take another step. You pick up the first paper and deal with it. suck it up and do it. Either way. You have twenty emails to answer. However. Winners persevere and take another step. you take a step and then a step. Any particular day may be tough and demand your best effort and concentration. with patience and honest hard work.Persist to Win You will be successful. you are in pain. You want to make ten cold calls today. the rewards of persistence will burst forth or slowly emerge. Be good. After six miles you are tired. You will never give up. but you take another step. Do it knowing that what you are about to do may advance your cause only slightly or have no effect at all. you win. Of this. give up. Or. You pick up the next paper. After eight miles. You make the first call.

They are moving forward.In Business. study. They are in control. These are self-reliant people capable of decisive action. Their performance is marginal at best. 17 12 . They spend what they make and have little if anything saved for investment. They are the corporate leaders and successful entrepreneurs. They research. you will find that workers are divided into three categories: 10. reactive and let circumstance and events shape their futures. Seventy percent of people are average. there is the top twenty percent of pro-active achievers. Get out now. You love your job. their families and their futures lies in their self-reliance and. If it were easy. You are working for a poorly performing company. plan and then take the risk. You are alert and aware to problems. many have learned otherwise. Research. their willingness to change. everybody. to face the unknown. 18 13 . Sales are dropping. Make an offer to buy the company. Take the risk. Find another job or start your own business You are alert and aware to opportunities.Risk Failure Average people are risk averse. Pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone may be difficult but it can also be exhilarating and profitable. Sadly. the average majority would do it. Your boss at the flower shop announces that she will be retiring and selling the business. often. You don’t ignore the warning signs. They delude themselves into believing that big companies will always be there to protect them. Take the risk. The extraordinary person accepts the fact that the real economic protection for themselves. They will cling to the perceived safety of the status quo. It isn’t always easy to try new things without proven guarantees. Your suggestions for corrective action are ignored.

suck it up and do what you know you have to do to succeed in business. yes. you might be passed over for promotion. Without whining. You have hit the wall. You may bang your knees and skin your knuckles. there will be other walls blocking your path. So. You need to climb over it. You will introduce products or services that will fall flat and cost you time and money. This is the wall. Pay the price. Others have gotten over that wall and you can learn from them. And. This is the price that you are being asked to pay. get ready and get tough. 14 19 . second guessing or complaining. Get tough. You will lose a big deal. The time to prove yourself is at hand. You are being tested. The world of business is not waiting anxiously for your amazing personal contribution. customers. Push over because all self-made successful people have been there.Get Tough On your way to extraordinary. For no good reason. clients or patients will switch to your competitors. Partners and employees may disappoint you. Climb over the wall.

Realize that many people don’t make plans because they don’t want to risk any change. Instead. you must seek change. there must be change. but for there to be growth. seek the changes which will allow you to be all that you can be as an athlete and a person. You must see yourself and your environment not only as it is. you change yourself. You seek the changes necessary to reach the better you so that you can play your part in being a better sportsperson and role model.
