your bosses will acknowledge. You excel by working hard at the harder aspects of your job. encouraging an individual to personal excellence. You find knowledgeable teachers and mentors. There are those who talk accomplishment. You identity the leaders in your industry and you do what they are doing. There are those who listen. thoughtful.Don’t Complicate Matters Average people often complicate business matters because within those complications. you can do. You find a way. you plan and you act. pay off your debts. You listen. You offer a quality product at a fair price. they can find excuses for inaction. You buy six properties. With the slow creep of discouragement. You allow discontent among staff to fester. some customer interest will wane. Ownership and management responsibilities are demanding. After the novelty wears off.Commit to Never Ending Improvement It’s fun and exciting to plan and open a business but after a few months. You attend to the details. you do that. You maintain the standards. reality starts to kick in. For the extraordinary. second rate and quitting are not options. It’s seems a small fact that the flowers in the beds outside the office are dead. You don’t turn a blind eye to anything. You are the boss. you may have to make improvements again and again. Perhaps several vendors should not have been so highly recommended. It gets easy to overlook the smudges on outgoing correspondence. Through your example. If you need to find new suppliers and new employees and new ways to promote your products or services. you are responsible for the energetic or toxic atmosphere in your workplace. If an employee has done an exceptional job. You make yourself tough by doing something that is personally difficult for you to do. Life doesn’t just happen to you. you follow up with your old clients and make the effort to reconnect. You must never allow yourself to fall into a depressing rut of sameness. today you will watch your diet and take a short walk. If you have been putting off making personnel changes. Order pizza for the office. make the small effort to publicly praise him or her. bring a rose home for the wife and a movie for the kids. just do it. If you have been neglecting your health. You embrace hard work. you choose a new challenge for yourself. you sleep well with a feeling of accomplishment. Every day. At the end of every day.

You are always alert and aware and your subconscious mind is always churning out new ideas and new possibilities for increasing income or decreasing expenses. Have your paper and pen and pencil and marker available. cross out and expand your thinking. When you aren’t at your desk working.Record Your Thoughts You will have lots of ideas. What catches your eye? Is it the layout of an ad or a retail floor plan or a combination of words or colors? Is it a new piece of equipment or a website? What do you see that is efficient or smart or high tech? Record your thoughts You aren’t just a person of action. 10 15 . You can’t help it. Circle. Your mind is focused on improving your business. Review your notes. underline. You are focused on success. It is who you are. Take some notes. You are a thinking person of action. Make a habit of writing them down.

Winners persevere and take another step. 16 11 . Either way. you win. To walk ten miles. Of this. You pick up the first paper and deal with it. Be good. but you take another step. After eight miles. Keep trying. You respond to the first email. After six miles you are tired. You make the first call. the rewards of persistence will burst forth or slowly emerge. It will never be over until you say that it is over. Get good. Or. You have twenty emails to answer. You want to make ten cold calls today. you are in pain. you take a step and then a step. You will never give up. Any particular day may be tough and demand your best effort and concentration.Persist to Win You will be successful. Do it knowing that what you are about to do may advance your cause only slightly or have no effect at all. However. there is no doubt. you take another step. You pick up the next paper. with patience and honest hard work. You face a pile of papers on your desk. Take a deep breath. suck it up and do it. give up. It would be easy to find an excuse to stop and few average people would blame you.

They work hard enough to not get fired. you will find that workers are divided into three categories: 10. Seventy percent of people are average. Pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone may be difficult but it can also be exhilarating and profitable. You are alert and aware to problems. Your boss at the flower shop announces that she will be retiring and selling the business. Sales are dropping.Risk Failure Average people are risk averse. plan and then take the risk. Make an offer to buy the company. many have learned otherwise. everybody. Research. You are working for a poorly performing company. They will cling to the perceived safety of the status quo. Your suggestions for corrective action are ignored. Find another job or start your own business You are alert and aware to opportunities. They delude themselves into believing that big companies will always be there to protect them. their families and their futures lies in their self-reliance and. often. the average majority would do it.

you might be passed over for promotion. yes. You will lose a big deal. This is the price that you are being asked to pay. second guessing or complaining. customers. Partners and employees may disappoint you. You need to climb over it. You may bang your knees and skin your knuckles. clients or patients will switch to your competitors. You are being tested.Get Tough On your way to extraordinary. there will be other walls blocking your path. Get tough. Others have gotten over that wall and you can learn from them. get ready and get tough. You will introduce products or services that will fall flat and cost you time and money. So. Climb over the wall. suck it up and do what you know you have to do to succeed in business. This is the wall. 14 19 . The world of business is not waiting anxiously for your amazing personal contribution. Pay the price. You have hit the wall. For no good reason. Push over because all self-made successful people have been there. And. The time to prove yourself is at hand. Without whining.

there must be change. Doing little with your life is much easier and safer than taking risks. Instead. Since you seek growth. You seek the changes necessary to reach the better you so that you can play your part in being a better sportsperson and role model. 15 20 .Be the Valued Employee The status quo may be comforting. you must seek change. but for there to be growth. but also as it could and should be. You must see yourself and your environment not only as it is. Can you change your day and spend more time with your family? Can you change your standard lunch routine and take a walk? Can you volunteer to coach and mentor those behind you who are just learning the game? What are the possible consequences of not changing? Realize that many people don’t make plans because they don’t want to risk any change. you change yourself. First. but then you will be a small person. seek the changes which will allow you to be all that you can be as an athlete and a person.
