AIM OF THIS SESSION
To give an overview of Catch Up Numeracy and its implementation and management in school (or other setting)

Introduction

WHO IS THIS SESSION FOR?
Local Authority advisers Members of school Senior Management Teams The member of staff who will manage Catch Up Numeracy in school (or other setting)

Introduction

WHO IS CATCH UP?
Catch Up is a not-for-profit charity which provides: comprehensive, integrated training and resource packages for organisations and staff, to support the delivery and management of Catch Up Literacy and Catch Up Numeracy ongoing support, through the Catch Up Community, for those who deliver Catch Up Literacy and Catch Up Numeracy to learners

Introduction

PROBLEMS WITH NUMERACY
Many adults suffer from disabling levels of anxiety about mathematics (Ashcraft and Faust, 1994) Many adults are open about not being able to do maths
(Ashcraft and Faust, 1994)

Most adults with low numeracy skills began experiencing difficulties with mathematics from as early as age 7
(Fennema, 1989)

Introduction

CATCH UP NUMERACY
Structured one-to-one intervention for learners who struggle with numeracy, based on Ann Dowker¶s ten components of numeracy Targeted to the identified needs of the individual, and maximises the effective use of resources (including µOvercoming Barriers¶) and approaches already available in classrooms

Introducing Catch Up Numeracy

CATCH UP NUMERACY
Grounded in rigorous academic research, and shown to be effective in schools across 37 local authorities Available as part of an accredited comprehensive, integrated and award winning training and resource package that supports both management and delivery of the intervention

Introducing Catch Up Numeracy

CATCH UP NUMERACY is suitable for
all learners who struggle with numeracy (working towards NC Level 1 or above) including:

those who are significantly below the expected National Curriculum Level for their age those whose Number/Maths Age is significantly below their Chronological Age those who find it difficult to learn in group situations

Introducing Catch Up Numeracy

CATCH UP NUMERACY
Catch Up Numeracy is designed for learners who struggle with numeracy rather than learners beginning numeracy

HOW DO WE KNOW THAT CATCH UP NUMERACY WORKS?

Results from the first Catch Up Numeracy pilot study, spring/summer 2007, comprising 60 learners (Years 2 - 6) across Brent LA, Hampshire LA, North Tyneside LA, Powys LA, Sandwell LA, and the Vale of Glamorgan LA.

THE CATCH UP NUMERACY INTERVENTION

CATCH UP NUMERACY
Catch Up Numeracy is delivered by staff (including teachers, teaching assistants and carers) who have been trained by Catch Up All the guidance and proformas necessary to deliver Catch Up Numeracy are included in the training and resource package Catch Up Numeracy resources are to be used alongside the school¶s collection of teaching materials and apparatus

Catch Up Numeracy

THE 10 COMPONENTS OF NUMERACY
Catch Up Numeracy focuses on 10 components of numeracy identified in the original research

Catch Up Numeracy

THE 10 COMPONENTS OF NUMERACY
Counting verbally Counting objects Reading and writing Hundreds, tens and units Ordinal numbers Word problems Translation Derived facts Estimation Remembered facts Counting, counting forwards and backwards, out loud Counting objects, order of counting, adding and subtracting objects Reading numbers and number words (e.g. 3 and three), writing numbers Comparing numbers (bigger and smaller), adding and subtracting First, second, third« Numerical problems written with words (e.g. If Ann had 3 marbles«) Translating between objects, numbers and number words Using known number facts to help calculate unknown number facts Estimating! Immediate recall of µknown¶ facts (e.g. 2 + 2 = 4)

Catch Up Numeracy

CATCH UP NUMERACY LEVELS
Catch Up divides each of the 10 components of numeracy into 12 Catch Up Numeracy Levels These Catch Up Numeracy Levels have been designed to make formative assessment and intervention practical to administer

THE 4 STAGES OF CATCH UP NUMERACY

THE 4 STAGES OF CATCH UP NUMERACY
1. Formative assessments 2. Identifying an appropriate focus for
numeracy teaching

3. Individual teaching session (15 minutes,
twice a week)

4. Ongoing monitoring

STAGE 4: Ongoing monitoring
The record kept of each Individual teaching session and the learner profile give valuable information about the learner¶s needs and progress

STANDARDISED TESTS

We recommend that progress is also monitored by means of a standardised Number/Maths test This should be administered at the beginning, midpoint and end of the year, as appropriate The standardised test is most useful when it is first administered before the Catch Up Numeracy Formative assessments
