Perfusionist

A perfusionist is a specially trained individual who manages the cardiopulmonary bypass

heart/lung machine during surgery. A perfusionist’s responsibility is to operate a heart/lung

machine that artificially replaces a person's heart or lung functions during a surgery. If a patient's

heart or lung functions need to be stopped at any time, the perfusionist is responsible for this

task. The machine that the perfusionist uses, pumps oxygenated blood throughout the body and

notes down the proper circulation, which continues throughout the surgery.

Perfusionists are required to work well under pressure, and to be able to work well

independently! To become a Perfusionist you must have a Bachelor's degree in nursing,

biological sciences or respiratory therapy. Programs providing education for this line of work

range from one to four years in length. A student can get ahead by taking courses closely related

to algebra and biology in high school which would give them knowledge of this type field work.

The student is recommended to do after school activities which would help their social skills

improve and would further develop their knowledge on that particular field of science.

A Perfusionist’s salary begins anywhere from 60,000 dollars to 90,000 dollars.
