New dates for COMTRANS 2011

D ates for COMTRANS Moscow
2011, the International Exhibition
for Commercial Vehicles, have been
announced. The fair will now take place
in alternate years to IAA Commercial
Vehicles, with the 2011 event to take
place from 13-17 September 2011.
Organisers have been pleased with the
number of registrations so far which
indicate a rise in demand for commercial
vehicles in Russia and the CIS.
National and international
manufacturers of commercial vehicles
and their suppliers will be presenting
new products for the markets in eastern
Europe and the CIS in Pavilion 3 at the
Crocus Expo International Exhibition
Center in Moscow.
Many of the major truck manufacturers
have already registered for this
exhibition, including Volvo, Scania,
Mercedes, DAF, Volkswagon, MAN,
Kamaz and Iveco. Several major trailer
manufacturers have also registered
including Kögel, Lohr, Kässbohrer, ZF,
Bezares, Blitzrotary, Kendrion Linnig
and Padoan. ■

Improved rest areas and bridges
in Victoria
T he Australian Government has
announced that six rest areas
along the Hume Freeway will be rebuilt
and seven bridges within Victoria’s
Green Triangle will be strengthened
so that they can carry new higher
productivity vehicles.

Green Triangle region is scheduled to
commence in coming months.

The Victorian Transport Association
(VTA) held elections on Tuesday, 26
October for positions on its General
Freight Committee (GFC) and has
announced those that have been elected
for 2010/11.
The General Freight Committee reports
to the VTA Executive Council. VTA CEO
Philip Lovel AM said it is the ‘engine
room’ for the strategic management
of issues dealt with by the Association
which affect general freight.”

projects would be funded as part of
the second and final round of the
Government’s $70 million Heavy Vehicle
Safety and Productivity Program.

and distance off the journeys of many
truck drivers and the upgraded rest
areas will provide safe, modern places
at which they can take a break or catch
up on their sleep.

The General Freight Committee is
responsible for shaping the policy
directions and the initiatives generated
by the VTA on productivity issues,
safety, technology uptake, people and
environmental issues.
Mr Lovel commented, “We’ve got
outstanding leaders in the freight
logistics industry represented on the
GFC, and their knowledge and expert
advice is highly valued by us.”
Peter Anderson, Border Express, was re-
elected for his sixth term as Chairman
of the Committee, while Angela Murphy
from Murphy Transport Solutions was
re-elected Vice Chairman.
“Since coming to office, we’ve been
working with the trucking industry to
address the lack of roadside facilities
and open up more of the nation’s road
network to trucks – actions which
will make the industry safer and more
productive.”
The $8.19 million in funding for the
projects within the Green Triangle and
along the Hume Freeway supplement the
$11 million already committed by the
Victorian Government. ■
“Peter’s long-term commitment
to the VTA is outstanding, and the
stability he brings to the role has
helped the Committee to stay focussed
and effective. Angela continues to
demonstrate that gender is no barrier
to active industry representation at the
highest level,” said Mr Lovel.
He continued, “The evolving stricter
regulatory environment at the State
and Federal level will affect the
freight logistics industry significantly.
The General Freight Committee is
responsible for making the voice of
the VTA in these debates strong and
well-reasoned.
“But, there is also a lot that the
industry needs to do for itself to shape
its own successful and profitable
future. This includes addressing
future workforce planning & skills
challenges, encouraging innovation
and best practice, improving safety
outcomes, and tackling environmental
improvements from a commercial
perspective. The GFC is central to these
initiatives on behalf of the VTA.” ■
