Specification

for: Toy Car

Mech 201
Dept. of Mech Eng.
McGill University

1. Geometry: Toy height: xx cm; Toy depth: xx cm; Toy length xx cm.

2. Kinematics: There will be motion in two directions. One motion along the horizontal,
and one along the vertical.

3. Forces: Toy needs to be strong enough to support it’s own weight and be durable
enough to withstand child play. Mechanisms (such as gears and axles) used to create
both types of motion should also be durable enough to withstand repeated usage.
Should be able to support roughly about 10-20 pounds of pressure.

4. Material: Cardboard, balsa wood, string, rubber bands, k’nex gears and axles,
screws, pins, popsicle sticks. scotch tape, glue. [constraint]

5. Safety: Stable enough to not break if child with 3-8 years of age were to be playing
with it. No small pieces which could create a choking hazard.

6. Ergonomics: Must be a fun toy for child. As child rolls our toy car on the ground, he
should create one vertical motion and horizontal motion of a dog which is situated on
the car.

7. Maintenance: Must be able to withstand continuous play without any of the

mechanisms (axles, gears, motion of toy) failing. Must be able to withstand minor
collisions and bumps.

8. Costs: Materials should not cost more than 10-20 dollars. Therefore cost to complete
whole project should be less than 20 dollars. [constraint]

9. Schedules: Delivery Date: November 30th 2010. [constraint]
