I. Title of Lesson: ABC Graffiti: Nouns and Possessive Nouns

II. Michigan Curriculum Reading

 R.MT.02.06- determine which resources contain appropriate information for the

intended task using teacher/student generated criteria.

 W.GR.02.01- in the context of writing, correctly use more complex complete

sentences, nouns and verbs, commas (in a series, in a letter, and with dates),

contractions, colons to denote time, and capitalization of proper nouns.

III. Lesson Objectives:

Students will:

 Demonstrate an understanding of nouns and possessive nouns by completing and

ABC Graffiti chart.

IV. Materials Needed

 Large sheets of paper

 Marker

 School House Rock: Nouns

 Board and dry erase marker

V. Anticipatory

 Mind capture: School House Rock: 3 minute Noun video

VI. Instructional Input

 Give a short review on nouns and possessive nouns

 Remind students that to make a singular noun possessive we add (‘) –s

 To make most plural nouns possessive we add an (‘)

 Give examples of plural and singular possessive nouns on the board

 Once done explain to students that we are going to be working in groups to make

nouns singular and plural possessive.

 Teacher already has students grouping

 Before grouping. Show students ABC paper.

 Each letter of the alphabet is placed down the side of the large piece of paper.

 Place the word noun, singular, plural as headings

 Explain that each group will come up with one noun for each letter of the alphabet

that they have on their paper

 Once they come up with the noun, next to it, make the word singular possessive

 Once made singular possessive come up with the plural possessive of the noun and

write that word under the appropriate heading (singular/plural)

 Show students an example

 Have the student with the birthday closest to today’s date be the writer of the

group. Students can take turns writing if in order of birthdays.

 The other group members help with coming up with words

 Let students work on ABC Graffiti possessive for about 10 minutes

VII. Closure

 Once finished have students decide which member of the group is going to be the

recorder. Students decide by figuring out which of their names comes first in the

alphabet.

 The recorder will write one of their group’s noun, singular possessive form, and

plural possessive form of the noun on the board for all to see

 Each group gets a turn.
