One Electronic Reserve Readings page. Watch, read, and listen to the media presented, which deals with domestic violence. Domestic violence can take the form of physical assault, sexual and emotional abuse, intimidation, economic deprivation, and threats of violence. It occurs in all cultures and knows no boundaries of race, sex, or social class. Victims of domestic violence often find themselves dealing with a dilemma: if they run away or denounce the perpetrator, they fear retaliation; if they keep quiet and let the perpetrator get away with their actions, then their own silent suffering continues. What strategies could you use to help someone deal with this kind of dilemma? Among families there are countless cases of domestic abuse. It is a problem that is growing, not only in size but in intensity. This intensity causes victims of abuse to be too scared to come forth and talk about their situation. They are made weak by their perpetrator and left terrified of the consequences of telling anyone. There are some, however, who do come forward. Seeking help is the first step in breaking the bonds of fear. Until someone knows that they can trust another person not to hurt them, they will never be able to take the first steps toward denying further abuse. This is very hard to do, however, since trust is broken once they become abused. Nonetheless there are sometimes family members who can help, or guidance counselors who are sworn to protect their privacy. Week 1 question 2 Responses should be a minimum of 200 words to receive full credit.) Sometimes, political leaders make statements appealing to emotion and give the impression that holding a middle-ground position is not an option. President George W. Bush used this type of appeal after September 11th, 2001 by stating, “Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists” (Address to joint session of U.S. Congress, September 20, 2001). Identify strategies you can apply in your daily life to develop and improve your thinking, and explain what kinds of considerations you can take when dealing with moral issues such as this one. In order to improve my thinking I can ensure that I make informed decisions on my own. This requires being independent and trying to meet my needs, making sure that I am aware of any other help that is available. Even if I have my own opinion about something I will ensure that I have explored other options to determine what the best choice or point of action would be. I would like to seek investigations into things which are asked of me, finding out the purpose behind them and why I should be involved, how I am already involved, and how it could affect me in the future. I should make sure that I am safe and that my decisions do not put me in harm’s way. If something does not seem right to me then I will have to conduct further investigations until I find something which is better suiting. It is best to know that I am a wise individual who seeks knowledge over ignorance and who can make informed decisions, judging things for what they are and not just what someone else tells me they should be. Morality is a personal choice and it my morals should not be influenced by someone else’s desires or wants. Week 1 question 3 A child in first grade believes that she is in school longer on Thursdays than any other days of the week. How could you help the child understand that all her school days are the same length and improve her thinking skills? I would easily explain to the child how long they are in classes. This would be broken down into hours each day, such as from 8 until 3pm. I could then explain when breaks and lunches are and how long they last, deducting that time from the total hours they are in school. This would show mathematically to the child how each day is the same amount of hours and minutes. I would then explain that Thursdays seem longer because it is so close to the end of
