In most companies the practice of relying on actual drawings of the
design will continue for some years. Although parts lists were historically
written on the drawing itself by the engineer, this practice is now widely
recognized as obsolete, with the parts list being maintained in the product
structure file. In companies making highly engineered, complex products, the
drawing process itself can become quite complex, and control of the

drawings is critical. Consequently, drawing structure control systems have
been developed, using a logical relationship system, pointers, where-used
capabilities, and the like, all similar to the product structure logic. In
addition, there may be sets of pointers defining logical relationships between
each drawing and its associated parts as shown in the product structure file
and in the part master file.
