form. She begins with a writer's thoughts on preparing to write--"the proper implements at hand. Pen, pencil, typewriter, computer"--and then begins a series of paragraphs which depict factual and fictional letter writing scenes. The love story of Eugene Onegin by Aleksander Pushkin predominates as the main one among others which include the night before Dumane's execution as he writes to his wife; the letter writing attempts of two passengers aboard a doomed JAL flight to Osaka; variour requests for love; ghost letters, if ever mailed, now lost; an explanation of why letters are no longer written; letters being written in Geneva, New York, Hong Kong, Italy, Oxford, Germany and on the back of a dromedary camel. The writer mentions practicing writing "in the head," as Artur Schnabel, the pianist, did to practice music.
