Introduction Mandriva Enterprise Server 5 (MES 5) offers Linux users and all business and administrations the opportunity to take advantage of the best of Linux (reliability, security, low admin costs) associated with the best of Mandriva Linux (easy to use, exclusive Mandriva tools and professional services) for the administration and integration of servers. For example, in update to MES 5, users will receive a wide range of enhancements, including significantly increased virtualization scalability. MES 5.1 now integrates new features of virtualization, among which the KVM technology (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) accompanied with tools of administration for a simple management in everyday life.
Mandriva Enterprise Server 5 (MES 5) also includes: Mandriva Directory Server (MDS) is totally integrated in MES 5. MDS enables some administrative work to be delegated to colleagues and offers users a directory of unique passwords independent of the platform being used. In addition, MDS incorporated a well-stocked API which enables the easy development of new modules and automates the everyday admin tasks;
Another beauty with MDS is the server's installation wizard enables Open Source bricks pre-configured by Mandriva for optimal efficiency to be quickly installed without the hassle that comes with using Linux. MES 5 is designed to be modular and customizable and, therefore, can be easily used for the configuration of specialized servers like LAMP etc. The Administrator can, for instance, configure an E-mail Server, or File and Print Server or a Directory Server. And to make the job even easier, it takes less than 15 minutes to install. Furthermore, on top of reducing operating costs and cutting down on time, MES5 limits hardware investment and reduces energy costs through its integrated virtualizations tools XEN and KVM. These virtualization bricks enable MES 5 to envisage a real policy of server coordination.
Hands-on Lab Solution: In this Hands-on Lab session, we’ll concentrate on installing Mandriva Enterprise Server 5 which you can then later use to install any other applications as desired. After completing the initial installation I’ll show you how to install DNS server, LAMP server, and Samba file server using MDS web interface. You’ll also have opportunity to do some lab assignments at the end of the lab session.
