MASTER PANCAKE THEATER

austin’s movie mocking maestros

FORREST GUMP
Jan 21 & 22, Village, DIR. Robert Zemeckis, 1994
For one weekend, Master Pancake is going to boil, bake, batter and fry the beloved ‘90s classic FORREST GUMP. Featuring Tom Hanks (TURNER & HOOCH) as a good-hearted
shrimp baron whose hobbies include jogging, playing ping-pong, eating chocolates and telling long, boring stories. Also featuring Sally Field (NOT WITHOUT MY DAUGHTER) as
momma Gump, Robin Wright Penn as Gump’s baby momma, and Gary Sinise as Gump’s bosom buddy. Watch Master Pancake and guest-mocker Scott Chester give new meaning
to the phrase “Run,Forrest, Run” as they gleefully pursue this overrated icon. (John)
THE NOTEBOOK
Jan 28 & 29, Feb 4& 5, 11 & 12, Ritz, dir. Nick Cassavetes, 2004
Feb 10, Lake Creek
This January/February, Master Pancake whips out their giant Sharpie and scribbles all over THE NOTEBOOK, the romantic movie sensation of the decade that has left more
boyfriends with moist shoulders than a gigantic army of shoulders caught in a rainstorm. James Garner plays Noah, who narrates the story-within-the-story to his lady friend
Allie, who has Alzheimer’s (for the memory-impaired, the writer has offered a mnemonic device you’ll never forget: Allie has Alzheimer’s). Ryan Gosling plays the young hero
of the story, who takes one gander at Rachel McAdams and his goose is cooked. By the end of the movie there won’t be a dry shoulder in the house. Come on out, two by two,
and see how Noah navigates this flood of tears as Master Pancake dives into the most sentimental movie ever made! (John)
VIDEO JUKEBOXX II
Feb 2, Ritz
Do you have a short attention span? Do you like quick-cuts, explosions, childrens choirs, and scantily clad ladies? Ever wish Master Pancake would tackle short, easily digestible
mini-movies every once in a while? Your wish comes true for one night, as the Master Pancake Video Jukebox turns their withering gaze upon the worst in music videos! We’ll
have a new line-up of special guest-mockers tackle an all-new slate of cheesy classics from the ‘80s, ‘90s, and present day. And at the end of the night, the top 3 teams as decided
by you will have to battle it out in an improvised group mock. Don’t miss this one-night-only event as we get all MTV on the big screen. (John)
ROBOCOP
Feb 18, 19, 25 & 26 Ritz, dir. Paul Verhoeven, 1987
Feb 24, Lake Creek
This February, Master Pancake Theater impounds the sci-fi classic ROBOCOP. Directed by insane genius Paul Verhoeven
(SHOWGIRLS, BASIC INSTINCT) and featuring Peter Weller (BUCKAROO BANZAI) as the cycloptic robo-hero and Kurtwood Smith
(THAT ‘70S SHOW) as his evil nemesis. Set in a dystopian future when arms corporations control the government and Detroit
has gone to hell (who could have predicted any of that?), ROBOCOP tells the story of how one man’s death, rebirth, and second
coming as a kick-ass Robo-Jesus can make a real difference. This show features ultra-funny guest mockers Mac Blake and David
Jara of Mascot Wedding and the costume designs of insane duct-tape genius Joe Parsons. Join us as we mock the most thrilling
machine to come out of Detroit since the Pinto. (John)
STAR TREK MOCK V: KLINGONS vs. KLINGONS!
Feb 21, Ritz
NERD ALERT!! Normally, we take on full-length movies, but just for tonight, Master Pancake will be boldly mocking the greatest sci-fi television series of all time: STAR TREK.
And because Master Pancake can’t agree on which is the best iteration of the TV series (John is a fan of STAR TREK: T.O.S., Joe loves NEXT GENERATION) we’ll be showing – and
mocking – one episode from each era. John will satisfy his Shatner boner; Joe will unleash all his Tasha Yar jokes; and the audience will reap the rewards of our collective nerd
juice. In this fifth iteration of the “Star Trek Mock” series, we’ll be pitting old Klingons vs New Klingons and you, the audience, will decide which species is more badass. The only
losers tonight will be fans of the lame-ass VOYAGER and DEEP SPACE NINE.

FEASTS AND FILMS

Exquisite multi-course meals paired with fine wines and finer cinema

LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY HOBBIT FEAST

Jan 9, Ritz, Dir. Peter Jackson, 2001/2002/2003, PG-13, 640 min (total), 35mm
This all-day event is an annual Alamo tradition as old as the ancients...or whenever RETURN OF THE KING came out.
Each year we must gather to recount the epic quest of the hobbit Frodo and his merry band of dwarves, wizards,
elves and Viggos. We snuggle up together and watch the entire LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY - nearly 12 hours - and
get loaded to the gills with food, beer and wine all inspired by Tolkien’s Middle Earth! Each of the seven(!) courses
is served during each Hobbit meal time! By the time the King (spoiler alert!) ascends to his rightful throne, you too
are ready to go back to the Shire and be greeted as a hero by your loved ones who didn’t think you would make it
all the way...and then pass out.

Wine Flights: VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA w/Claudia Alarcón

JAN 26, RITZ, DIR. WOODY ALLEN, 2008, PG-13, 96 MIN, 35MM
Wine Flights is a new series that couples films with wine experts who curate a series of wines paired perfectly to the movie of the evening. To kick off the series, we
are excited to present VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA, the idyllic trip through Spain that celebrates love, passion, and the wines of Catalonia and we’ll be joined by guest
sommelier Claudia Alarcón. Woody Allen’s ode to the romanticism of Spain is a touching and tender film, combining his classic sense of human exploration with old-
world European charms. A pragmatic and conservative brunette, Vicky (Rebecca Hall), and a sultry and dangerous blonde, Cristina (Scarlett Johansson), get the dream
opportunity of spending the summer in Barcelona. There they see the art of Gaudí and Miró, nibble on tapas and drink fabulous wines. Their trip takes a strange turn
when the painter Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) shows up as Latin sexuality personified. Upon meeting the girls he invites them to spend the weekend with him in the
quaint town of Oviedo: “I’ll show you around the city, and we’ll eat well. We’ll drink good wine. We’ll make love,” he says, as every woman on Earth melts. From there the
romantic entanglements are born, and no one is safe from the charms of the other. Just as the sediment of sexuality begins to settle, in comes a disaster – Juan Antonio’s
tumultuous ex-lover, Maria Elena (Penélope Cruz), bursts into the idyllic scene. VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA sweeps you up with its charming Spanish landscapes and
passionate way of life. Javier Bardem cannot help but seduce you, and the power trio of Johansson, Cruz, and the scene-stealing newcomer Rebecca Hall will fire up even
the most dormant lust. Our guest expert Claudia Alarcón has worked for 15 years in the Austin wine world, settling now as a professional freelance writer, with her main
gig as a regular contributor to the Austin Chronicle. Alarcón has chosen a trio of Catalan wines for the occasion. Catalonia is one of the great historic wine-producing
regions. Expect a light cava, a dry white, and a bold red. (Daniel)

SATURDAY MORNING CARTOON CEREAL PARTY - BOY TOONS VS. GIRL TOONS
FEB 12, RITZ, ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT CEREAL!
Even before they are escorted into separate rooms for sex ed, boys and girls are aware of their differences. The frightening NOVA
videos of goopy childbirth and outdated boner filmstrips are horrifying but ultimately unnecessary. Everything we needed to know
we learned the first time we watched Saturday morning cartoons. Boys, with their army of awkward bodies and squeaky voices,
sat firmly on the side of leaders such as GI Joe, He-Man and Batman. Girls, on the other hand, drew their power from Care Bears,
My Little Pony and Jem. Two divergent forces, one lifting the banner of a better world through violence while the other looked
to peace, sparkles and computer-aided rock music. Can’t we all just get along? Absolutely not! Prepare yourself for the ultimate
showdown of girl cartoons vs. boy cartoons. This is more than a show; it’s a full on battle. Only one side will emerge as the victors
and claim the grand prize of a lifetime of bragging rights. Everyone, however, will share in the consolation prize of an all-you-can-
eat cereal buffet that will make the roof of your mouth ache for a week.

CHOCOLAT Valentine’s Day Feast
Feb 14, LAKE CREEK, DIR. LASSE HALLSTROM, 2000, PG-13, 121 MIN, 35MM
What better way to usher in the most romantic day of the year than with the thick, creamy goodness of CHOCOLAT? Vianne (Juliette Binoche) moves to a small French
village with her daughter to open a chocolaterie. At first, the modest townsfolk are weary of their new, buxom resident, but once they partake in the delights of her
shop, they discover the almost magical charms of Vianne’s treats. While her desserts bring pleasure to the locals, Vianne also finds her indulgence in a dreamy eyed Gypsy
(Johnny Depp). This picture celebrates the power of passion and chocolate in equal measures, a ratio we can support while licking our fingers.

EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN VALENTINE’S DAY FEAST

FEB 14, VILLAGE, DIR. ANG LEE, 1994, NR, 124 MIN, 35MM
Celebrated director Ang Lee and the Alamo chefs present an event that will appeal to all of your
senses. Trouble is cooking for widower and master chef Chu, who’s about to discover that no matter
how dazzling and delicious his culinary creations might be, they’re no match for the libidinous
whims of his three beautiful but rebellious daughters. A master in the kitchen, Chu is at a loss when
it comes to the ingredients of being a father. So, as relationships sour and communications break
down, Chu concocts a sure-fire recipe that will bring his family back together. The menu offerings
will include many delicacies taken straight from the film to your plate.

WEST SIDE STORY VALENTINE’S DAY FEAST

FEB 14, LAMAR, DIR. JEROME ROBBINS AND ROBERT WISE, 1961, NR,
152 MIN, 35MM
This year get Valentine’s Day right with a delectable feast designed with love and care by the
chefs of the Alamo Drafthouse and a film that is quite possibly the most romantic story of
forbidden love ever told. In 1950s New York the Jets and the Sharks are two tough, high-stepping
street gangs who do not get along. Their lives revolve around how much they despise each other
for no good reason and beautifully choreographed dancing knife fights. When Tony the Jet falls
hard for Maria the Shark, they decide not to let the warring gangs’ differences and needless hate
come between them. (Kayla)

PRINCESS BRIDE VALENTINE’S DAY FEAST

Feb 14, Village, Dir. Rob Reiner, 1987, PG, 98 min, 35mm
Brand new 35mm print!
“Is this a kissing book?” This thoroughly tongue-in-cheek, forever quotable swashbuckling fairytale is by far one
of our all time favorite movies. How can it not be? It involves a dread pirate, insanity-inducing cliffs, a princess, a
wily Sicilian, a six-fingered count, ROUS (Rodents of Unusual Size), Fred Savage, and, most importantly, LOVE!!!
This Valentine’s Day, come to the Alamo, cozy up with your very own personal Buttercup or Westley, and indulge
together in a sumptuous feast perfectly matched to the derring-do, sharp wit, and butter-melting romance of
the Princess Bride.

SUMMER WARS
Jan 10-12, RITZ, DIR. MAMORU HOSODA, 2009, NR, 114 MIN,
35MM
Winner of the Japan Academy Prize as Best Animated Feature and acclaimed by
Variety as “spectacular” and “visionary,” SUMMER WARS opens at Lamar for a full
week matinee run in the English dubbed version and for several night shows at the
Ritz in the subtitled version. While not rated, SUMMER WARS is the equivalent of PG.
An animated epic, SUMMER WARS tells the tale of a young nerdling pretending to
be the boyfriend of a schoolmate on her summer trip to her aging grandmother’s
house. When an online social networking community known as Oz gets attacked by
a piece of sentient malware that threatens to deliver a denial of service attack to
the entire world, her massive extended family unites to restore peace to cyberspace.

THE ROOM
JAN 14, 21, 28, FEB 4, VILLAGE, DIR. TOMMY WISEAU, R, 99
MIN, 35mm
Whether or not Tommy Wiseau intentionally shot his film as a “black comedy”, or if he
is simply an inept filmmaker (and actor) is utterly irrelevant. THE ROOM will stand the
test of time as one of the most mind-bendingly awesome offerings to ever drop from
the celluloid heavens. Completely financed and distributed by Mr. Wiseau, the film
premiered at the Laemmle Theatre in Los Angeles in June of 2003. Within minutes
of the start of the film, audience members were literally rolling around and crying
with laughter. Since its release, the film has built a cult following playing midnight
screenings across the country and has solidified its place as the “CITIZEN KANE” of
terrible movies. The Guardian described the film as a mix of “Tennessee Williams, Ed
Wood and R. Kelly’s Trapped in the Closet,” which is as apt a description as we could
possibly provide. For lovers of laughably bad cinema, THE ROOM is like sweet manna
from heaven. God bless the great Tommy Wiseau! (Bret)

and spent less than $100 to make his magnum opus. A mind-boggling feat, to be
sure, but it wasn’t just some crazy, pointless experiment. Nope, the resulting film
is actually good. Praised by audiences and critics alike, this film delivers a sincere
and enjoyable take on Dave Morrell’s original story. Even Morrell gave this film
his stamp of approval thanks to the undeniable energy and passion of Oberzan’s
manic one man mission.

WHO IS HARRY NILSSON (AND WHY IS EVERYBODY TALKIN’ ABOUT HIM?)

Jan 3, Ritz, $2, Dir. John Scheinfeld, 2006, NR, 116 MIN
with special guest host audra shroeder of the austin chronicle!
If you mention Harry Nilsson’s name, there are two possible responses – “Who the Hell is that?” and “I love that guy!”
You’re either hip to the brilliance of Nilsson or you haven’t heard of him yet. Nilsson, who the Beatles often cited was their
“favorite band,” was a songwriter of immense talents and a singer with a range unmatched in popular music. Although
most famous for singing the theme of MIDNIGHT COWBOY, “Everybody’s Talkin’,” he also penned and recorded the classics
“One,” “Coconut” and countless others. This documentary exposes Nilsson as a songwriter but also as a person, an often-
reckless almost-rock star who partied too hard for too long. Stories about him and John Lennon on benders in the ‘70s are
at once fascinating and immensely melancholy, shining a light on the dark side of genius. If you go to this movie, you will
become a fan of Harry Nilsson.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE FABULOUS STAINS

Jan 10, Ritz, $2, Dir. Lou Adler, 1982, R, 87 min, 35mm
Dare to witness the electrifyingly entertaining rise and fall of the world’s ultimate fictional female
punk band. Teenage trio The Fabulous Stains (including a barely post-adolescent Diane Lane and Laura
Dern) tear fists-first into the music industry in new wave battlegear, letting nothing stand in the way of
their revolutionary assault on a deflating male-dominated record industry. Featuring raging footage of
The Looters and Black Randy & The Metrosquad and performances from a young Ray Winstone and Fee
Waybill of The Tubes, this legendary battle call to rockers, wavers and punks everywhere is a crucial and
explosive experience, unstoppably enjoyable and often credited as being a fundamental inspiration to
the historic Riot Grrl musical/social movement.

James Brown live at Boston Garden 4/5/68

JAN 17, RITZ, $2, Dir. WGBH, 1968, NR, 70 MIN
Less than 24 hours after Martin Luther King’s assassination the city of Boston was in a state of turmoil.
When James Brown arrived at the airport to play his already scheduled show he was warned that the
mayor, fearing further unrest among the African American community, planned to cancel the show. Not
only did the show go on at Brown’s insistence, but public television station WGBH broadcast the whole
thing. It’s an incredible historical document and a fantastic performance by James Brown, who dedicated
the show to Dr. King’s memory and brought the raw emotions within himself and his community to a
searing head.

THE BLUES BROTHERS
Jan 24, Ritz, $2 Dir. John Landis, 1980, R, 133 min, 35mm
Encore brunch screening Jan 30 (regular price)
In honor of the late John Belushi’s birthday (he would have been 62 this Jan 24th), we present one of
the comic’s most beloved films, THE BLUES BROTHERS. Belushi and Dan Akroyd star as Jake and Elwood
Blues, two brothers on a “mission from God” to save their old Catholic orphanage the only way they know
how: by putting their old band back together and performing a charity gig. Along the way, they dodge
lawmen of every kind, neo-Nazis, and crazy ex-girlfriends. Featuring performances by James Brown,
Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles at their funky, late ‘70s best.

24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE

Jan 31, Ritz, $2, Dir. Michael Winterbottom, 2002, R, 117 min, 35mm
Maybe it’s the lame poster for the film, which does kind of make it look like a TRAINSPOTTING knock off about ravers, but Michael Winterbottom’s 24 HOUR PARTY PEOPLE
is criminally under-appreciated. Yes, ecstasy and warehouse parties do come into play, but the film is really the story of the Manchester music scene, circa 1976-1992 (all
the way from days of punk to the height of the “Mad-Chester” scene) as told by Factory Records founder Tony Wilson (the ever charming Steve Coogan). Inspired after
catching a Sex Pistols gig, Wilson and his friends founded Factory and, mostly by sheer luck, signed some of the most influential artists of the time: Joy Division, James,
and the Happy Mondays. Then they all spent the next couple of decades feeding voracious appetites for sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll -- and of course pissing away fortunes
while doing it. Sure, it’s a familiar tale. But Winterbottom and company tell it with style and cheeky flair (and crammed in great archival performance footage), completely
transcending your average rise to rock bottom music biz story.

TOM WAITS: BIG TIME

Feb 7, Ritz, $2, Dir. Chris Blum, 1988, PG, 97 min, 35mm
Encore screening Feb 9 (regular price)
By the early 80’s, Tom Waits had already begun his transformation from rumpled, jazzy hipster to bizzaro troubadour, eschewing his old smoky piano-driven
sound and embracing dissonance, gravely vocals and dark theatrics. BIG TIME came at the height of this period, following the release of his “trilogy” of albums,
SWORDFISHTROMBONES, RAINDOGS, and FRANK’S WILD YEARS. The film features live performances of songs from all of these albums and more (including songs not found
on the film’s accompanying album, not that we’re obsessed). Between songs, Waits hams it up as a variety of characters from his song mythology in absurd segments
given just a touch of ‘80s neon gloss by director Chris Blum. An absolute must-see for the devoted, BIG TIME also ranks among the best music movies of its era. Long out
of print on VHS and still not available on DVD!

TIMES SQUARE
FEB 14, RITZ, $2, Dir. ALLAN MOYLE, 1980, R, 111 MIN, 35MM
Back by overwhelming demand! The last time we screened this masterpiece of post-adolescent wild-
assedness, we were told by the studio that it’d be the final time the film ever ran. But through insane
luck, we’ve managed to find the only other known print on Earth, and bring it to you! TIMES SQUARE tells
the story of Pammy and Nicky, two teenage runaways who form a powerful relationship in the hardest
streets of the big city. Eventually, their irrepressible lust for freedom manifests in rock and roll, and they
form the group The Sleez Sisters, a new wave sensation that sweeps up half of New York in a seething
frenzy. Tim Curry appears as dissentious DJ Johnny LaGuardia, but the real star here is Robin Johnson as
Nicky, a gravel-voiced 14-year-old girl who’s just as comfortable swinging a chain as an electric guitar.
A truly incredible experience, long out of print on video, and destined to change your entire damn life.

PHIL OCHS: THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE

Feb 21, Ritz, $2, Dir. Kenneth Bowser, 2011, NR, 96 min
Encore screening March 2 (regular price)
Few names conjure up the sound of the 1960s like Phil Ochs. More than just a folk singer, Ochs helped to infuse popular music with a political perspective, rallying the like-
minded and challenging the status quo. Phil Ochs, like many of his generation, was engaged with the issues of his time. He sang in the famous Greenwich Village cafes,
in front of massive rallies and in world famous concert venues. Kenneth Bowser’s insightful and ultimately tragic film, PHIL OCHS: THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE, explores the
motives and goals that drove Phil Ochs to chase after fame. Bowser also reveals the personal struggles that in the end proved overpowering. With the voices of his family
and many of the well-known musicians who considered themselves fans of Phil Ochs, Bowser creates a vivid and compelling portrait of an icon of the ‘60s whose life was
cut tragically short. (Woodstock Film Festival)

A real jerk of a floating pyramid plagues interstellar travelers by causing their deepest fears to manifest in the

as the cro-magnon-intellect equivalent of SOLARIS unfolds with no regard for sanity or structured storytelling,
but as you can see from the artist’s depiction accompanying this paragraph, shit gets real. Quite possibly the

BLOOD RAGE
JAN 18, RITZ, $1, DIR. JOHN GRISSMER, 1983, R, 84 MIN, 35MM
Two entirely unrelated films were released with the title “BLOOD RAGE.” The first – from 1979 – was about an unassuming,
mentally ill teenager who delights in carving up innocents. Then came this underwatched sleazoid gem about an unassuming,
mentally ill teenager who delights in carving up innocents. Lucky you...we got the good one. This blade fetish thunderbolt is a
minor masterwork of counterintuitive exploitation, as a set of identical twins (played by one actor, of course) embark on a cat-
and-mouse disemboweling spree across their own apartment complex. There’s not all that much more to the plot, but the movie
practically radiates with the type of intellectual abandon usually reserved for mentally challenged people watching a New Years
parade. While each individual performance seems beamed in from a different dimension, the twins’ suffering mother – played by
TV comedy star Louise Lasser – truly brings the insanity home. Watch closely to see a grown-ass man mush up a piece of pumpkin
pie and throw it at a wall. (Zack)

NIGHT TRAIN TO TERROR
JAN 25, RITZ, $1, DIR. VARIOUS, 1985, R, 98 MIN, 35MM
The only reason this movie exists is to spite humanity. As a species, we’ve spent thousands of years struggling to make sense of the world around us. Then this horror
anthology shows up and ruins it. The premise: Two old men named Mr. God and Mr. Satan are on board a (night) train discussing the fates of various individuals. Each
subject’s story appears on a magic screen, and we see their macabre tales unfold. Within, you’ll find a clearly labeled collection of human heads, Richard “Bull from NIGHT
COURT” Moll, a giant claymation tarantula demon, a 15-pound bee, satanic occultism, Richard Moll AGAIN, horrible slayings, horrible-er nudity and much more. The
installments were shortened from feature length films -- one of which was never completed -- and then evidently edited together by a five-year-old with three fingers
and some scotch tape. While Mr. God and Mr. Satan continue their discussion, an aerobics crew perform a toe-tapping synchronized song-n’-dance that will keep your skull
shattering on into the night. The weirdest movie we’ve ever screened at Terror Tuesday, no shit. (Zack)

CRITTERS 2
FEB 1, RITZ, $1, DIR. MICK GARRIS, 1988,
PG-13, 93 MIN, 35MM
The denizens of Grover’s Bend must again band together to face the razor-toothed onslaught of the star-born Crites,
but now the meat-seeking spherical beasteroids have multiplied and learned some new tactics for mass ingestion.
These mangy malevolent muppets are larger and trickier than before, and though they’ve discovered the pleasures of
fast food and live cattle, humans are still at the top of their grocery list. Earth’s fate lies in the hands of a melon-headed
teenager, a fat ex-sheriff, a bucktoothed drunk and two shape-shifting galactic bounty hunters named Ug and Lee. Look
for Hollywood’s ultimate meganerd Eddie Deezen in the role of “Hungry Heifer Manager.” And don’t be fooled by the PG-13
rating...this installment features much heavier doses of nudity, profanity and manic, outrageous violence, including a
mutilated policeman in a pink bunny suit crashing through a stained glass church window into the laps of grandmas and
children. Take that, God. (Zack)

MANIAC COP 2 with DIRECTOR WILLIAM LUSTIG LIVE!

FEB 8, RITZ, $1, DIR. WILLIAM LUSTIG, 1990, R, 90 MIN, 35MM
Let’s look at the facts: MANIAC COP 2 is quite truly The Greatest Horror-Action Movie Ever Made. Violent, whiplash-
paced, supernatural and completely insane. It was written by horror legend Larry Cohen and stars Robert Davi, Robert
Z’Dar, Bruce Campbell and even the lady who played the indestructible dancer in THE HIDDEN. You don’t need to have
seen the previous installment as the basics are quickly recapped and this film definitely stands on its own. I know
it’s my job to tell you that movies are good, but this is coming from my heart: DO NOT MISS THIS. Especially because
monumental director William Lustig (MANIAC, VIGILANTE) will be there to present it and he’s amazing himself. He
told the funniest story I’ve ever heard about making a movie, involving a hospitalized cameraman and a stunt driver
wearing blackface in Queens. But I digress. Here’s what I’m gonna do: If you somehow don’t LOVE LOVE LOVE this
movie and feel like you got ten times your money’s worth in entertainment, I will personally refund your admission
price from my own damn pocket. And I’m one broke-ass jerk. But I’m a broke-ass jerk with the ultimate confidence in
MANIAC COP 2’s power to entertain you beyond all reason. This is for real. If you like horror movies or just enjoy having
fun in any way, BE THERE TONIGHT. (Zack)

SCREAM BLACULA SCREAM

FEB 15, RITZ, $1, DIR. BOB KELLJAN, 1973, PG, 96 MIN, 35MM
Special Black History Month screening! In this -- the wildest of the BLACULA entries -- our throat-
ripping hero sinks his teeth into the nefarious world of voodoo. It’s a good thing that drive-in movie
theaters don’t come with walls, ‘cuz they would’ve shaken to the ground when the dark vampire lord
was introduced to superhumanly incredible black magic priestess Pam Grier! The duo use every dark art
in their arsenals against each other and mankind at large, and every manner of ‘70s stereotype gets
caught in the crossfire: smooth detectives, pimps, thugs and lots n’ lots of vampires. This was the black
horror film that found the ideal balance of action, humor and all-American violence. Reprising his title
role, the amazing William Marshall is a 6’5” Shakespearean-caliber whirlwind of undead ass-kickery.
His commanding voice and relentlessly smoldering rage are unforgettable. He’d later use neither when
playing The King of Cartoons on PEE-WEE’S PLAYHOUSE. Tonight, we honor his life, work and eternal
hunger for innocent blood. (Zack)

THE ORACLE
FEB 22, RITZ, $1, DIR. ROBERTA FINDLAY, 1985, R, 94 MIN, 35MM
After an impressive career in welfare-budget porn, female filmmaker Findlay did a mid-’80s 180 and
turned her attentions to what she’d openly admit is her least favorite genre: horror. In this theoretically
lucrative shift from butts to guts, THE ORACLE was born...sideways...strangled by its umbilical cord. An evil
supernatural force wreaks havoc on a tenement and its occupants. Greek dudes are reduced to bubbling
goo. Cars are driven on crowded sidewalks. A potato-shaped lesbian slices up victims in a sex dungeon.
Without a doubt, this is one of the sleaziest, greaziest, displeaziest tales to ever crawl from the sewers of
NYC. The sets look like they were borrowed from Hungarian public access soap operas. The actors perform
as if their parents are being held at gunpoint off-camera. Watching this movie is exactly like taking a stroll
through a wino’s brain immediately after you’ve set him on fire. “Lick the knife.” (Zack)

THE BLACK GESTAPO

JAN 5, MIDNIGHT, $1, DIR. LEE FROST, 1975, R, 88 min, 35MM
Two of the greatest names in the history of exploitation cinema are Lee Frost and Wes Bishop. Although
they made sleazy actioners on minimal budgets, their taste, wit and discretion really shine through in the
final product. Always a barrel of laughs but never (ugh) “campy,” they really deliver in the sex and violence
department too. Movies like THE THING WITH TWO HEADS, POLICE WOMEN, RACE WITH THE DEVIL, and DIXIE
DYNAMITE will never be taught in film school, but they thrill and delight moviegoers whenever they’re shown.
THE BLACK GESTAPO is about the fictional Black Peoples Party of Watts, formed to drive white gangsters out of
the community, which makes for a lot of violence and great dialogue. But in an unexpected Hegelian twist, the
commandante of the Party (played by easygoing Charles Robinson aka “Mac” of NIGHT COURT fame) becomes
power-mad and wreaks even more havoc until the powerful, politically incorrect ending scorches all traces of
reason from your skull. (Lars)

GET MEAN
JAN 12, MIDNIGHT, $1, DIR. FERDINANDO BALDI, 1976, NR, 84 min, 35MM
As the spaghetti western cycle reached its inevitable end in the 70s, the genre started getting weirder.
Producers sought to prolong the formula by juicing it up with outside elements so audiences ended up
with kung-fu westerns, sex westerns, many (bad) comedy westerns and this movie, about an American
gunslinger who ends up fighting Vikings and Moors while trying to transport a Spanish Princess back to
her rightful throne. The anachronisms are never explained or even alluded to. It’s just a Spaghetti Western
where the cigarillo-chomping man with no name wanders around medieval Europe fighting fur-clad
barbarians with broadswords. Producer and star Tony Anthony was the last real Spaghetti Western star of
the era. His other gimmick westerns included BLINDMAN (with Ringo Starr) and COMIN’ AT YA! in 3D. (Lars)

FLESHPOT ON 42nd STREET
JAN 19, MIDNIGHT, $1, DIR. ANDY MILLIGAN, 1973, R, 80 min, 35MM
Of all the well-known “cult auteurs,” Andy Milligan is possibly the most problematic. His films lack any production polish
whatsoever; the camera moves and shakes wildly, the sound is bad and the music is just cuts from his record collection,
haphazardly mixed. But the most commercially difficult aspect of Milligan’s films is their unrelenting misanthropy. Each film
is like a hate poem to some aspect of human nature. FLESHPOT ON 42nd STREET is his final sexploitation feature and with it he
completes his lifelong argument that sex is horrifying and degrading. As in all of his films, his grossly manipulative characters
bicker endlessly and insult each other with special vehemence. Milligan himself was a walking colossus of hatred and bitterness,
disliked and avoided by most of his peers but able to build a stock company of masochists who debased and degraded themselves
onscreen for him. This is not for everyone but if you have a place in your shrunken heart for the blackest, darkest, most evil comedy
in the world, this will move right in - and steal your TV set. (Lars)

CHARLEY VARRICK
JAN 26, MIDNIGHT, $1, DIR. DON SIEGEL, 1973, PG, 111 min, 35MM
Ever since we widened the scope of Weird Wednesday to include manly action and pulp films, we have presented such titans of
testosterone as Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood. Now add Walter Matthau to the list. CHARLEY VARRICK is another
of the great outlaw classics of the ‘70s and it’s impossible to imagine anyone better for the role of the titular bank robber than the
pooch-faced, slouchy Matthau. Billing himself “The Last Of The Independents,” Charley Varrick robs rural banks for a living and
keeps moving, until one heist goes wrong and Varrick accidentally ends up with the mob’s money. The syndicate dispatches tough
guy Joe Don Baker to recover the loot and the chase is on. A lot of people die, but the crafty Varrick always manages to stay a step
ahead. Director Don Siegel was the absolute master at this sort of thing and he keeps the tempo high, the characters real and the
action popping. Not to be missed. (Lars)

PENITENTIARY
FEB 2, MIDNIGHT, $1, DIR. JAMAA FANAKA, 1979, R, 99 min, 35MM
The story of boxer “Too Sweet” (Leon Isaac Kennedy), whose only way out of lockdown is by winning the big fight. Highly
plausible scenario? Of course not. Entertaining? Oh hell yeah. Director Jamaa Fanaka specializes in the smuggler’s approach
to socially relevant film-making. He’ll sneak some serious shit past you like a jailhouse shiv while you’re looking the other way.
And this film, enjoyable though it may be, scores some heavy points even as it entertains. He presents a nightmarish microcosm
of American society where prison is an omnipresent threat in the lives of African American males, and where sports and
entertainment are viewed as the only means of escape. A gritty, highly entertaining movie, with tons of great dialogue you’ll
be quoting for weeks. (Lars)

VIGILANTE with Director William Lustig Live!

FEB 9, MIDNIGHT, $1, DIR. WILLIAM LUSTIG, 1983, R, 90 min, 35MM
Unfairly dismissed as a DEATH WISH ripoff by people who never got past the title and poster, VIGILANTE is a tremendous, gritty masterpiece of revenge cinema. When
factory worker Robert Forster’s family is victimized by street criminals, he pursues the legal route through the justice system. But when a corrupt court turns the
perpetrators loose he teams up with Fred Williamson’s de facto clean-up crew to drive the scum from the streets. Far more than just a button-pushing exercise in payback,
VIGILANTE addresses the real issues, both social and personal, involved in taking the law in our own hands and Forster and Williamson give outstanding performances
under the direction of William Lustig. Balance, pacing, action are all perfect here. If the climax of this movie doesn’t have you pumping your fist in excitement, you should
see a fist doctor right away. (Lars)

LOVE ME DEADLY
FEB 16, MIDNIGHT, $1, DIR. JAQUES LACERTE, 1973, R, 95 min, 35MM
Just in time for two days after Valentine’s Day! Finally a film that takes a sympathetic view of necrophilia. This film
examines California blonde Mary Wilcox’s little corpse-fucking “problem,” as if it were an afterschool special about
a teenager who takes too many diet pills or something. In this movie, she’s driven to join a cult of devil-worshipping
necrophiliacs by the intolerance of a few bluenoses. And really, why can’t we have more compassion for those who
break into mortuaries and hump our recently deceased loved ones? Maybe if we all get together and watch LOVE
ME DEADLY we can get over our silly Victorian hangups about sex with the dead! (Lars)

BLACK COBRA
FEB 23, MIDNIGHT, $1, DIR. JOE D’AMATO, 1976, R, 98 min, 35MM
Every night before I lie down to sleep, I say my prayers. I thank God for the birds and the flowers and the
morning dew and puppy dogs... But mostly I thank God -- at length -- for Laura Gemser, star of BLACK
COBRA. Miss Gemser was positively heaven-sent for the sex-film explosion of the ‘70s: lithe, dark-skinned,
with doe-eyes and movements as graceful as a lily in the breeze. She may well have been the most
beautiful actress of the ‘70s -- period. But her career track led her to star in some of the most perverse
films ever made. Her Black Emanuelle knockoff movies more than made up for in kink what they lacked in
glossy production values. The director she collaborated with most fruitfully was Joe D’Amato, a filmmaker
of sporadic brilliance whose talent really came to life with the addition of Gemser. BLACK COBRA is one of
their best collaborations, and my personal favorite. Gemser plays a stripper with a python act who has a
very strange effect on two brothers -- sleazy charmer (and her real life husband) Gabriele Tinti and the
late, great Jack Palance, as a bizarre, ranting snake fetishist. With an ending that will leave you speechless.
Music by Piero Umiliani. (Lars)

Cinema Club: SOME CAME RUNNING with Richard Linklater

JAN 16, RITZ, DIR. VINCENTE MINNELLI, 1958, NR, 137 MIN, 35MM
After seeing the mega success of Columbia Pictures’ FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, MGM optioned the follow-up novel by
James Jones, SOME CAME RUNNING. A semi-autobiographical story, the novel tells of an author and war veteran who
returns to his hometown in Indiana and shakes things up. Frank Sinatra stars, here on the peak of his rise as a legitimate
actor; he won an Academy Award for FROM HERE TO ETERNITY in ’53, and had just shocked the country as a heroin
addict in Otto Preminger’s controversial 1955 film THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM. Here he embodies the pathos of a
tortured writer torn between clean-living serenity and hard-drinking, floozy-dating desolation. He’s supported by Dean
Martin (their first film together), as a professional gambler, and this is one of Martin’s most graceful and hilarious roles.
Grabbing at Sinatra’s coattails is the dumb-as-a-brick tart played by Shirley MacLaine. MacLaine’s turn as the pathetic,
swooning hussy is a heartbreaking performance that earned her an Academy Award nomination, alongside supporting
actors Martha Hyer and Arthur Kennedy in memorable and dynamic roles. In beautiful expansive Cinemascope and with
the expressive touches of director Vincente Minnelli (who cut his teeth in the musical genre with films like AN AMERICAN
IN PARIS and GIGI), SOME CAME RUNNING is a miracle of moviemaking that is not to be missed. (Daniel)
Our Cinema Club guest this month is Richard Linklater, director of SLACKER, DAZED AND CONFUSED, and BEFORE SUNRISE.
This is his favorite movie. That’s good enough for us.

Zzang!!!: THRASHIN’
JAN 16, RITZ, DIR. DAVID WINTERS, 1986, PG-13, 93 MIN, 35MM
It’s like a tragic Shakespearean love story ollying on a wicked half-pipe! Oscar nominee Josh Brolin plays Corey, a
skateboard-crazed teen tourist who quickly falls for a true California dreamgirl. Unfortunately, her brother Tommy is
the kingpin of The Daggers, a gang of criminal deckriders who rule Venice Beach with a denim fist. These off-suburban
nogoodniks dent cars, berate breakdancers and get severely peeved when Valley pissants like Corey horn in on their ramps
and/or siblings. The rivalry is fierce; Corey is called “Val trash” and counters with “punk poseur.” Hatred flairs, limbs are
broken in wheeled combat and Tommy performs some blazing air guitar in preparation for the film’s epic climax: a 20-mile
downhill skate race named The LA Massacre. Incredibly, Brolin and the other cast members do much of their own skate
and stunt work, adding surplus thrills to this already-raging adolescent eyeburner. Definitely the single most combustible
triumph in skater cinema, presented to you in a gorgeous 35mm print! ZZANG!!! (Zack)

girlie night: PRETTY IN PINK

JAN 18 & 25, RITZ, DIR. EMILE ARDOLINO, 1987, PG-13, 100 MIN, 35MM
As far as I’m concerned, PRETTY IN PINK is the definitive guide to the classification of high school boys. Sure, fashion and hairstyles have changed (was Andrew McCarthy’s
hair ever cool?), but the universal truth of the film remains: if you’re a teenage dude, you’re either a Duckie or a Blaine. The Duckies of the world are typically adorable and
goofy, but they’re just never gonna make it out of the friend zone. The Blaines, on the other hand, were born to be hot and popular, so of course they take everything for
granted and don’t appreciate the awesome, amazing girls right in front of them. In other words, dating in high school sucks. Fortunately, PRETTY IN PINK channels that
suckage through Molly Ringwald, light of my life, and wraps it all up in a fabulous 80s package. The music! Iona’s wardrobe! Iona’s hair! James Spader! The prom dress!
Ok, well, not so much the prom dress.

This film set the standard for teen movie cliches and created teams way before Edward and Jacob. So come celebrate the cinematic greatness of PRETTY IN PINK at Girlie

Severin Films Presents: SANTA SANGRE
JAN 19, RITZ, DIR. ALEJANDRO JODOROWSKY, 1989, R, 123 MIN, 35MM
In celebration of their new DVD release of this Jodorowsky classic, Severin Films is presenting this rare 35mm screening. SANTA SANGRE is as worthy of classic status
as Alejandro Jodorowsky’s earlier tandem EL TOPO and THE HOLY MOUNTAIN. It takes the hysteria and strangeness of Mexican pulp art and pushes it to the limit and
far beyond, creating a bizarre world of armless saints, ruthless drunken knife throwers, deformity and madness. Along the way, there is beauty, love and towering
imagination. If you’ve never seen SANTA SANGRE on the big screen don’t miss this chance.

MANIAC with DIRECTOR WILLIAM LUSTIG LIVE!

FEB 8, RITZ, DIR. WILLIAM LUSTIG, 1980, R, 87 MIN, 35MM
BRAND NEW 35MM PRINT! William Lustig is easily one of our nation’s greatest living filmmakers. His savage action
and horror films (VIGILANTE; MANIAC COP) tore through the screen to assault the audience, with blood, bullets and
sheer hatred burning through every frame. And with this – inarguably his exploitation masterpiece – he plumbs
the depths of the cinematic sewers like never before. Also accountable for the film’s multiple offenses is its titular
leading man(iac) Joe Spinell, a deeply talented character actor who makes this the role of his lifetime. If I was the
type of guy who used the phrase “tour de force performance,” I’d do it here. His character is a self-loathing, seemingly
rabid force of human extermination, a flesh-destroyer whose brain practically boils out of his skull with every human
interaction. His world is drowned in perpetual darkness, and he lashes out at anything within reach. Really, REALLY
strong stuff, and featuring the shockingly convincing effects work of Tom Savini…including a particular scene that
– when watched on the big screen – will have people doing backflips and/or puking down the front of their shirts.
(Zack)

Zzang!!!: BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA

FEB 13, RITZ, DIR. JOHN CARPENTER, 1986, PG-13, 99 MIN, 35MM
The triumphant return of the BRAND NEW 35mm PRINT!! As you may already know, this celluloid atom bomb is – without a doubt -- the most SLAM-BANGIN’EST, GUN-
BLASTIN’EST, ANCIENT CHINESE MYSTICISM-INEST ACTION ADVENTURE COMEDY THRILLRIDE EVER SEEN!!!!!!!!! For those of you who’ve yet to experience this pulse-pounding
foray into life-affirming entertainment, this movie ranks way up there with GHOSTBUSTERS and PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE as an ultimate distillation of PURE FUN. Kurt
Russell plays two-fisted trucker Jack Burton: a gambling, beer-chugging schmoe whose macho heroics land him on the supernatural kung fu warrior shitlist. The lightning
and lazerbeams fly through the streets of San Francisco as Jack and his fellow lowbrow adventurers face off against rampaging maniacs, elemental demigods, mythical
beings and even prehistoric subterranean monstrosities!! This movie is about a hundred and fifty thousand times better than your foremost reason for living, so DON’T
MISS OUT! ZZANG!!! (Zack) -- ALSO PLAYING FEB 15 & 16 AT REGULAR TICKET PRICE --

Cinema Club: BIGGER THAN LIFE with Marjorie Baumgarten

Feb 20, RITZ, DIR. NICHOLAS RAY, 1956, NR, 95 MIN, 35MM
At every Cinema Club screening, we are joined by a guest expert who introduces the film and then joins Alamo programmers in
an onstage discussion after the movie. This month the guest is the Austin Chronicle’s Film Editor and senior reviewer Marjorie
Baumgarten.
BIGGER THAN LIFE is one of Nicholas Ray’s very best films. James Mason plays a school teacher, in serious pain from a rare
disease, who submits to an experimental drug regimen that changes his personality wildly. In the midst of one of those
perfect ‘50s families, he descends into full-blown monomania. It’s a stunning film and Mason’s slide into madness is downright
biblical. Nicholas Ray’s films are frequently perverse and romantic. He was at severe odds with the hyperconformity of the
1950s and his movies reflect it. Another Ray hallmark is exceptional performances. We think of James Dean in REBEL WITHOUT
A CAUSE, Mercedes McCambridge in JOHNNY GUITAR and many others. James Mason’s performance here is worthy of those.

Girlie Night: DIRTY DANCING

FEB 22, RITZ, DIR. EMILE ARDOLINO, 1987, PG-13, 100 MIN, 35MM
Encore Screening Mar 1
When DIRTY DANCING came out in 1987, it changed my life. Partly because I realized that my parents would never
take me to a family summer camp, which meant that I would never be able to fall in love with Patrick Swayze in a
“Hungry Eyes” montage, which obviously meant that my life was basically ruined. While that was sort of a short-term
impact, the film’s more permanent legacy is its role as the mother of all dance movies. As I breathlessly watched
Baby and Johnny stun the country club set to the soaring notes of “Time of Your Life,” I realized that dance had the
power to CHANGE things! Dance could overcome social and racial barriers; it could break down prejudice; it could
even transform a really annoying person like Baby into someone awesome! Thanks to DIRTY DANCING, I came to
understand the power of dance, and consequently discovered my favorite genre of film: the dance movie. Baby and
Johnny paved the way for future silver screen amalgamations of love on the dance floor; in other words, without
DIRTY DANCING, there would be no STEP UP 2: THE STREETS (a horrifying thought, I know). With such a monumental
legacy, DIRTY DANCING deserves our utmost respect, as well as a high amount of romantic mega-sighs. Obviously,
there’s no better place to celebrate it than Girlie Night, where chair dancing is encouraged and absolutely no one will
be put in a corner. (Sarah Pitre)

“MY PERESTROIKA follows five ordinary Russians living in extraordinary times —
from their sheltered Soviet childhood, to the collapse of the Soviet Union during
their teenage years, to the constantly shifting political landscape of post-Soviet
Russia. Together, these childhood classmates paint a complex picture of the dreams
and disillusionment of those raised behind the Iron Curtain.”

inform them. Looking into the 100- year history of film criticism in America, Peary’s
heartfelt, thoughtful documentary shows us how well constructed criticism arose

ENTER THE VOID
JAN 2 & 8, RITZ

SXSW PRESENTS
Some of our favorites from last year’s SXSW

ENTER THE VOID

JAN 2 & 8, RITZ, DIR. GASPaR NOÉ, 2009, NR, 161 MIN, 35MM
One of the most anticipated cinematic events of the year, Gaspar Noe’s ENTER THE VOID is a visionary thrill ride that’s riveted audiences at the Cannes, Toronto, Sundance
and SXSW film festivals. At Cannes, Manohla Dargis of The New York Times called it “an exceptional work... the work of an artist who’s trying to show us something we
haven’t seen before.” The long-awaited follow up to his controversial IRREVERSIBLE, ENTER THE VOID is an immersive and mind-bending experience. Oscar and his sister
Linda are recent arrivals in Tokyo. Oscar’s a small time drug dealer, and Linda works as a nightclub stripper. One night, Oscar is caught up in a police bust and shot. As he
lies dying, his spirit, faithful to the promise he made his sister that he would never abandon her, refuses to leave the world of the living. It wanders through the city, his
visions growing evermore nightmarish. Past, present and future merge in a hallucinatory maelstrom. Nathaniel Brown and Paz de la Huerta star in a visceral journey set
against the thumping, neon club scene of Tokyo, which hurls the viewer into an astonishing trip through life, death, and the universally wonderful and horrible moments
between.
AND EVERYTHING IS GOING FINE
JAN 3-5, RITZ, DIR. STEVEN SODERBERGH, 2010, NR, 89 MIN
AND EVERYTHING IS GOING FINE provides an intimate portrait of master monologist Spalding Gray, as described by his most critical, irreverent and insightful biographer:
Spalding Gray. Soderbergh, who collaborated with Gray on GRAY’S ANATOMY (1996), has sifted through rare and revealing footage to construct a riveting final monologue.
There are glimpses of Gray’s father, and of his son Forrest (who provides soaring music for the end credits), but mostly this is an inspired one-man show, a bittersweet
display of Spalding’s playful and embattled intelligence, his gift for tracking universal truths by looking himself squarely in the eye.
the UPSETTER: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF LEE SCRATCH PERRY
JAN 12 & 17, RITZ, DIR. ETHAN HIGBEE, 2008, NR, 95 MIN
Finally in theaters, a feature length documentary about one of the most fascinating and influential artists of our times, the genius of reggae and dub, Lee Scratch Perry.
The film begins in rural Jamaica, probing into Perry’s mysterious youth as well as the notorious events of his peak production years in Kingston, in which Scratch mentored
a young Bob Marley, created the sound of reggae as we now know it, pioneered a new genre of music he called Dub, invented what was to become the remix and produced
international hit songs for artists from Junior Murvin to The Congos to Paul McCartney to The Clash all while working out of the infamous Black Ark Studio, a shack that he
built with his hands and later burned to the ground in a fit of drug addled rage. Equally a documentation of a musical culture and a fascinating character study of genius
and madness, THE UPSETTER is a sight and sound clash of visual and aural styles, utilizing ancient stock footage, photographs, concert video, audio clips, music video clips
both old and new, and an exclusive, candid interview with the mastermind himself at his home in Switzerland. Filmed in Jamaica, London, Switzerland, New York, San
Francisco, Los Angeles and Colorado, THE UPSETTER charts Perry’s influence on all reaches of the globe.
Tiny Furniture
JAN 31, FEB 1 & 6, RITZ, DIR. LENA DUNHAM, 2010, NR, 98 MIN, 35MM
Winner of SXSW’s Best Narrative Feature Prize
Pitched unsteadily if shrewdly between honest self-reflection and squirmy narcissistic indulgence, the low-budget indie TINY FURNITURE is one of the bigger itsy-bitsy
movies to hit this year. It was written and directed by the newcomer Lena Dunham, who also plays the leading role of Aura, a recent college graduate who returns to her
family’s TriBeCa loft and promptly tries to crawl back in the womb. 22-year-old Aura returns home with the following: a useless film theory degree, 357 hits on her Youtube
page, a boyfriend who’s left her to find himself at Burning Man, a dying hamster, and her tail between her legs. Luckily, her trainwreck childhood best friend never left
home, the restaurant down the block is hiring, and ill-advised romantic possibilities lurk around every corner. Surrounded on all sides by what she could become, Aura
just wants someone to tell her who she is.
