YO/YTO FLUID FLYWHEEL CLUTCH THE CLUTCH USED IN AUTOMOTIVE POWER TRAINS WITH MANUALLY SHIFTED TRANSMISSION IS A MECHANICAL COUPLING. THE FLUID COUPLING IS A HYDRAULIC COUPLING IT ALWAYS ´ENGAGEDµ. THE FIRST FULLY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM TO INCORPORATE A FLUID COUPLING WAS THE AMERICAN GEN MOTORS HYDROMANTIC G/BOX . WHICH WAS INTRODUCED IN THEIR 1939 OLDSMOBILE CAR. AUTO MECH . WHEN ENGAGED. THE DRIVEN MEMBER CAN SLIP OR TURN SLOWER THAN. BUT SINCE THE COUPLING IS PRODUCED BY A FLUID. IT COUPLES THE ENGINE TO THE TRANSMISSION. THE DRIVING MEMBER.

BEYOND WHICH THE SLIP DECREASED GRADUALLY TO A SMALL VALVE ABOUT 2 PERCENT AT ABOUT 3000 RPM. AS THE ENGINE SPEED INCREASES FURTHER TO ABOUT 1000 RPM. PERCENTAGE SLIP IS 100 WHICH MEANS CLUTCH IS FULLY DISENGAGED. AUTO MECH .YO/YTO CLUTCH OPERATION OF FLUID FLYWHEEL IT IS SEEN THAT FOR ENGINE SPEEDS BELOW ABOUT 500 RPM (FIXED BY THE DESIGNER) . THE PERCENTAGE SLIP FALLS RAPIDLY TO ABOUT 10.

YO/YTO OPERATION OF FLUID FLYWHEEL CLUTCH . THE ENGINE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO RUN AT A SPEED BETWEEN APPROX 500 AND 1000 RPM. THE SIMPLE FLUID COUPLING JUST DESCRIBED WOULD NOT BE VERY EFFICIENT UNDER MANY CONDITIONS BECAUSE OF THE TURBULENCE THAT WOULD SET UP IN THE OIL. THIS CONDITION IS SIMILAR TO A SLIPPING CLUTCH IN CASE OF ORDINARY FRICTION CLUTCHES. AS PERCENTAGE SLIP REPRESENTS DEFINITE LOSS OF ENERGY AND CONSEQUENTLY INCREASED FUEL CONSUMPTION. AUTO MECH .

TO REDUCE THIS TURBULENCE AND THERE BY MAKE THE COUPLING MORE EFFICIENT . WHEN THERE IS CONSIDERABLE DIFFERENCE IN SPEED BETWEEN THE DRIVING AND DRIVEN MEMBERS. AUTO MECH .YO/YTO CLUTCH OPERATION OF FLUID FLYWHEEL . FLUID COUPLINGS USE A SPLIT GUIDE RING CANTERED IN THE MEMBERS. THE OIL WOULD BE STRIKING THE VANES OF DRIVEN MEMBERS WITH GREAT FORCE. DUE TO THIS THE OIL SWIRL ABOUT IN ALL DIRECTIONS.
