4 Radius of Convergence

The nth - Term Test for Divergence The Ratio Test Hto be used with nth powers and factorialsL

Consider ‚ an , if Let ‚ an

•

be a series with positive terms,

n=1

HiL

an + 1

lim an π 0, then the series diverges and with lim ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ = L, Then

HiiL lim an = 0, then there is no conclusion HaL the series converges if L < 1,

The Convergence Theorem for Power Series

•

H1L There is a positive number R such that the series diverges for » x - a » > R but converges for

n=0

»x - a » < R. The series may or may not converge at either of the endpoints x = a - R and x = a + R

H2L The series converges for every x HR = •L

H3L The series converges at x = a and diverges elsewhere HR = 0L

If ‚ … an … converges, then ‚ an converges. Also, if ‚ » an » converges, then we say that

‚ an converges absolutely

For problems 7 - 12, determine the radius of convergence of the power series.
