Plane waves (= 425nm) fall normally on a slit 0.30mm wide. The separation of the sixthorder minima of the diffraction pattern in the focal plane of a converging lens is 2.25mm. Calculate the focal length of the lens?
W = 3.0 . 10-4 m n=6

 = 425nm = 4.25 . 10-7 m Distance between 4th-order minima = 2.25 . 10-3 m so distance from 6th-order minimum to centre of central maximum is: 2.25 . 10-3 m = 7.5 . 10-4 m 3 sin  = Sin  n. = W = 0.0085  6 . (4.25 . 10-7 m) (3.0 . 10-4 m)

 = sin-1 0.0085  0.0085 radians

tan  = opposite adjacent adjacent ( focal length) = opposite tan 

= 7.5 x 10-4 = 8.824 x 10-2 m 0.0085 Answer: focal length = 8.824 x 10-2 m
