Senate Democratic Leader John L.

Sampson announced Democratic members of the State Senate’s Rules and Finance committees today. As Democratic Leader, Sampson retains the role of Ranking Member of the Rules Committee. Historic Rules Reforms passed by Senate Democrats in 2009 guarantee that for the first full legislative session in modern history, committee membership will be based on equal proportion of all members. According to Senate Rules: “The membership of all committees, unless otherwise provided by the act or resolution creating them, shall be composed, as nearly as may be, of majority and minority party members in the same proportion as the number of majority and minority party members in the Senate bears to the total membership of the Senate.” The Rules Committee has 24 members in total, including 11 Democrats; the Finance Committee has 33 members in total, including 15 Democrats.
