Special Issue:
Theoretical issues and advanced
applications on Fuzzy Cognitive Maps

Guest Editors:

Aims and scope

In 1986, Kosko suggested the Fuzzy Cognitive Maps and their inference process.
Since 2010 FCMs received special attention from the scientific community,
producing the development of new advanced fuzzy cognitive models in many
fields as knowledge representation, fuzzy control, approximate reasoning,
strategic planning, management medical decision making, game theory, data
mining analysis.

The main advantage of the FCMs is the fact that it provides a powerful tool to
manipulate knowledge imitating human reasoning and thinking. Moreover, many
complex problems can be solved using FCMs. The learning algorithms for FCMs
is an important task that improves their operation and decision making
capabilities.

In many practical problems, systems based on FCMs have many solutions; in

other problems they cannot be resolved directly so that many authors developed
methods to solve these systems using different approaches like, for instance,
decomposition methods, learning algorithms, genetic algorithms, and so on. The
aim of this special issue is to give recent methodologies and trends of Fuzzy
Cognitive Maps and their applications to various domains (such as engineering,
agriculture, environment, management, business, education, medicine, computer
vision etc.)

This special issue of Applied Soft Computing will present a set of articles that
cover recent research results on FCM and its extensions. In particular, it aims to
present highly technical papers describing novel FCM models addressing any of
the following specific topics: theoretical aspects, novel applications and
extensions of FCMs. This special issue seeks original articles on the following
specific FCM topics (but not limited to):

• Theoretical Aspects on Fuzzy Cognitive Maps

• Fuzzy Cognitive Maps for Approximate Reasoning
• Knowledge Representation using FCMs
• Learning Algorithms for FCMs
• FCMs in Decision Making Support Systems
• FCMs in Control Systems
• FCMs in Education and e-Learning Approaches
• FCMs in Agricultural Systems
• FCMs in Engineering
• FCMs in Data Mining
• FCMs in Computer Vision Tasks
• Applications of FCMs in Environmental Management
• Applications of FCMs in Biomedical Engineering
• Applications of FCMs to Image Processing
• Fuzzy Grey Cognitive Maps
• Intuitionistic Fuzzy Cognitive Maps

This special issue is aimed at readers interested in recent and novel FCM
approaches providing a solution to key open problems existing nowadays at this
topic.

Deadline Dates

Submission of manuscripts: July 15, 2011

First revision notification: September 30, 2011
Submission of revision papers: November 30, 2011
Second revision notification: January 10, 2012
Submission of final revised papers: March 7, 2012
Final Acceptance/Rejection notice: April 20, 2012

Submission format

Papers will be evaluated based on their originality, presentation, relevance and

contribution to the field of Fuzzy Cognitive Maps, as well as their suitability to the
special issue, and for their overall quality. The submitted papers must be written
in excellent English and describe original research which has not been published
nor currently under review by other journals or conferences. Previously published
conference papers should be clearly identified by the authors (at the submission
stage) and an explanation should be provided how such papers have been
extended to be considered for this special issue. Guest editors will make an initial
determination of the suitability and scope of all submissions. Papers that either
lack originality, clarity in presentation or fall outside the scope of the special issue
will not be sent for review and the authors will be promptly informed in such
cases.

Author guidelines for preparation of manuscript can be found at

Submission Guidelines

All manuscripts and any supplementary material should be submitted through

Elsevier Editorial System (EES). The authors must select as “Special Issue:
Fuzzy Cognitive Maps” when they reach the “Article Type” step in the submission
process. The EES website is located at: http://ees.elsevier.com/asoc/
