Tobacco Usage

• In FY2010 Connecticut spent $7.2 million on tobacco prevention, which is 16.4% of the CDC
Annual Spending Target.1

• The CDC estimates that 57.2% of adult smokers in Connecticut tried to quit smoking in 2008.2

• Connecticut received $494 million in tobacco settlement payments and taxes in FY2010.3

• Connecticut has not securitized any of its Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) dollars.4

State Tobacco Laws9

Excise Tax: There is a tax of $3.00 per pack on cigarettes as of October 1, 2009. There is a
$0.55 tax per ounce of snuff. All other tobacco products are taxed 27.5% of the wholesale
price.10

Clean Air Ordinances

• Smoking is prohibited in all government buildings, health facilities, restaurants, bars and
schools.

• Smoking restrictions are required in all private workplaces and child care centers.

Youth Access Laws

• The minimum age requirement for the purchase of tobacco products is 18, and penalties
exist for both minors and merchants who violate this law.

• Establishments are required to post signs stating that sales to minors are prohibited.
