Foot Care and Diabetes:

Special care of the feet is especially important for a person with diabetes because nerve damage (neuropathy) can lead to foot infections. Without nerves to warn the brain of trauma to the foot, the tissue breaks down and can lead to severe infections. Be sure to mention to your Dr. if a sore develops on the foot which can lead to serious complications that could even result in the amputation of a toe or foot.

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH

Some causes of nerve damage in diabetes can be influenced by; * Smoking

*Drinking too much alcohol

*High blood pressure and high cholesterol

I

BASIC FOOT CARE

Set up a routine at the same time each day to remember to care for your feet. Look for any changes in nails, cuts, red spots, itching or rash, blisters, corns, calluses, swelling, or any change in the color or shape of the feet or nails.

*Throw away any old shoes, which may have germs and fungus.

* Shop for shoes at the end of the day when feet tend to be more swollen. * Use cream on the feet (but never between the toes) to keep skin from drying out and cracking.

If you can not care for your feet please ask a relative to trim your nails (straight across) and do a foot check for you. The CHR is available to trim nails and do foot checks for you also. So if you need this service please call Wadatika Health Center @ 541-573-7312 and ask for Cindy.

Any questions please contact: Wadatika Health Center 541-573-7312 ext. 223
