Monitoring Kit
The St. Croix Estuary
Objective:
The purpose of this kit is to provide a set of fixed sampling sites and sampling protocols that can be used over the long term to quickly and
efficiently assess the health of the St. Croix River Estuary. Detailed field studies should be conducted at 3 to 5 year intervals or when annual
assessments show there are problems or changes that need more detailed study.
Protocols:
1. Chemistry and Bacteriology - Water and sediment samples will be taken for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, salinity, conductivity,
temperature, pH, and redox, dissolved oxygen, total coliforms, and E. coli.
2. Intertidal Biota - The presence or absence of indicator species from the intertidal area will be surveyed.
3. Subtidal Biota and Sediments - The presence or absence of indicator species and bottom condition will be determined by remote video or
diver generated video.
Field teams of not less than 2 trained staff and/or volunteers will be responsible for each component.
Timing:
The preferred time for sampling is August and September, but no later than October 31.
Equipment:
a) Subtidal Sampling - camcorder, underwater camera, AC source, computer with movie application. Diver, boat, and Underwater camera or
remote underwate camera used from a kayak or canoe.
b) Intertidal Biota - Boots, Clipboard and data sheets.
c) Sediments & Water -ORP/pH/temperature meter; test Strips, bottles and kits for: sulphides, salnity, dissolved oxygen, phosphates, ammo-
nia, nitrite, nitrate, bacteria; gloves and data sheets.

Ammonia Access: Park in the Parking area just south of the strip park.
Temperature This is probably public parking, but permission should be
sought from the residents of the adjacent house. Alternate Park-
