operations in the Southwest Pacific,
would benefit the U.S. forces.107

From their bases in the South and
Southwest Pacific, the Allies hoped to
launch large-scale offensives during 1943.
As the old year ended, plans were already
being drawn for the reduction of the
Japanese stronghold at Rabaul. Once
details of strategy and command had
been settled and sufficient forces had
been assembled in the theaters, opera-
tions would commence.
