Any person registering a motorcycle is required to obtain a Class M1 or M2 driver license prior to operating the vehicle. and similar vehicles may fall within the definition of motorcycle. law enforcement. or motorized bicycle. tWo-Wheel Vehicle oPeratioN The basic rules of the road contained in the California Vehicle Code apply to all two-wheel vehicles which include motorcycles. motor-Driven cycles A motor-driven cycle is: • A motorcycle with a 149 cc or less engine size. Do not ride a moped on a freeway.iNtroDUctioN This handbook supplements the California Driver Handbook concerning traffic laws. DMV. trail bikes. Portions of this handbook which deal with safe driving practices (rather than traffic laws) were developed initially by the National Public Services Research Institute in cooperation with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) all agree that improved licensing. and driver licenses. In any collision. if you are wearing a helmet you are three times more likely to survive a head injury than if you aren’t wearing one. Unsafe Helmet Interior Safe Helmet Interior -7- . motordriven cycle. At these speeds. helmets can cut both the number and the severity of head injuries by half. head and neck injuries are reduced by properly wearing an approved helmet. or motorized scooter. • Most collisions happen on short trips (less than five miles long) just a few minutes after starting out. you have a far better chance of avoiding serious injury when you wear: • An approved helmet.PrePariNG to riDe What you do before you start a trip goes a long way toward determining whether you’ll get where you want to go safely. motorized bicycle. Helmet Selection There are two primary types of helmets which provide two different levels of coverage: three-quarter and full face. • Check the motorcycle equipment. you get the most protection by making sure the helmet: • Meets U. Department of Transportation (DOT) and state safety standards. Wearing the right gear When you ride. Here are some facts to consider. • Face or eye protection. Research shows that head and neck injuries account for a majority of serious and fatal motorcyclist injuries and that with few exceptions. • Be a responsible rider. • Wear the right gear. Before starting any trip. Whichever style you choose. • Protective clothing. • An approved helmet lets you see as far to the sides as necessary. No matter what your speed in a collision. • Most riders are riding slower than 30 mph when a collision occurs. All operators and passengers must wear an approved safety helmet when riding on a motorcycle. Many collisions result in head or neck injuries with head injuries being far more common. your gear is “right” if it protects you. Helmet Use Collisions can occur—particularly among new riders.

Leather or a sturdy synthetic material offers the most protection. Clothing The right clothing protects you in a collision. • Has no obvious defects such as cracks. It also protects you from wind. durable. and pebbles thrown up from the vehicles ahead. rain. but they don’t protect the rest of your face as a face shield does. NOTE: The DOT lettering should not be a stick-on label or easily removed. The heels should be short so they do not catch on rough surfaces. if you are involved in a collision. • Be resistant to punctures. eye or face shield protection must: • Be free of scratches. To be effective. it’s likely to fly off your head before it gets a chance to protect you. insects. A windshield is not a substitute for a face shield or goggles. dust. Tuck in laces so they won’t catch on your motorcycle. It also provides comfort. loose padding or frayed straps. cold. Most windshields will not protect your eyes from the wind. -8- . • Permit air to pass through. • Fasten securely. nor will eyeglasses or sunglasses. so it does not blow off. all the way around. slip-resistant material. you can devote your full attention to the road.• Has the DOT lettering on the back of the helmet for your safety. If you don’t have to deal with these types of problems. They should fit snugly enough to keep from flapping in the wind. but still allow you to move freely. Wear a jacket even in warm weather to prevent dehydration. • Boots or shoes should be high and sturdy enough to cover your ankles and support them. Many are designed to protect without getting you overheated. as well as protection from heat. and the hot and moving parts of the motorcycle. • Fits snugly. Eye and Face Protection A plastic shatter-resistant face shield can help protect your whole face in a collision. Tinted eye protection should not be worn at night or any other time when little light is available. Goggles protect your eyes. • Jacket and pants should cover arms and legs completely. • Permit enough room for eyeglasses or sunglasses. and they might blow off when you turn your head. Otherwise. even on summer days. • Give a clear view to either side. to reduce fogging. if needed. Keep your helmet securely fastened on your head when you ride. Glasses won’t keep your eyes from watering. Soles should be made of hard. dirt. debris.

• Headlight. • Check the motorcycle before every ride. Accelerate gently. your street-legal motorcycle must have: • Tires with sufficient tread for safe operation.• Gloves allow a better grip and help protect your hands. • Ride very cautiously and be aware of your surroundings. brake light. The Right Motorcycle First. • Avoid add-ons and modifications that make your motorcycle harder to handle. Work the throttle. If you use an unfamiliar motorcycle: • Make all the safety and maintenance checks you would on your own motorcycle. knoW your motorcycle There are many things on the highway that can cause you trouble. • Find out where everything is. • Be familiar with the motorcycle controls. Your motorcycle should not be one of them. Get Familiar with the Motorcycle Controls Be completely familiar with the motorcycle before you take it out on the street. Riding for long periods in cold weather can cause severe chill and fatigue. your clothes should keep you warm and dry. Good-quality rain suits designed for motorcycle riding resist tearing apart or ballooning up at high speeds. To make sure that your motorcycle won’t let you down: • Start with the right motorcycle for you. • Know the gear pattern. • Keep it in safe riding condition between rides. In cold or wet weather. and turn signals. -9- . • A horn and two mirrors. headlight switch. • Front and rear brakes. as well as protect you from injury. wrists. take turns more slowly. All controls react a little differently. You cannot control a motorcycle well if you are numb. and engine cut-off switch. taillight. Your feet should reach the ground while you are seated on the motorcycle. A winter jacket should resist wind and fit snugly at the neck. make sure your motorcycle “fits” you. and leave extra room for stopping. At minimum. and waist. horn. particularly the turn signals. clutch and brakes a few times before you start riding. Your gloves should be made of leather or similar durable material. fuel-supply valve. You should be able to find them without having to look for them. • Read the owner’s manual first.

ride extra carefully on any motorcycle that is new or unfamiliar to you. that is not the case. The clutch should feel tight and smooth. a mirror may show the edge of your arm or shoulder—but it’s the road behind and to the side that is most important. In addition to the checks before every trip. There . • Horn—Make sure the horn works. Adjust each mirror so you can see the lane behind and as much as possible of the lane next to you. • Turn Signals—Turn on both right and left turn signals. check hydraulic fluids and coolants weekly. preferably in a controlled area. Collisions are fairly common among new riders. Make sure all lights work properly. knoW your responsiBilities “Accident” implies an unforeseen event that occurs without anyone’s fault or negligence. • Headlights and Taillight— Check them both. • Brakes—Try the front and rear brake levers one at a time. and tread. check the following items at least once a week: Wheels. Most often in traffic. If something is wrong with the motorcycle. Test your switch to make sure both high and low beams work.10 - . fasteners. Make the following checks before every ride: • Tires—Check the air pressure.Check Your Motorcycle A motorcycle needs more frequent attention than a car. • Fluids—Oil and fluid levels. Once you are on the motorcycle. • Mirrors—Clean and adjust both mirrors before starting. you’ll want to find out about it before you get in traffic. In fact. Get familiar with any motorcycle that is new to you. and fluids. Blame doesn’t matter when someone is injured in a collision.) Remember that more than half of all collisions occur on motorcycles ridden by riders with less than six months experience. At a minimum. most people involved in a collision can usually claim some responsibility for what takes place. cables. Riding an unfamiliar motorcycle adds to the problem. Make sure each one feels firm and holds the motorcycle when the brake is fully applied. (No matter how experienced you may be. • Brake Light—Try both brake controls and make sure each one turns on the brake light. The throttle should snap back when you let go. When properly adjusted. complete the following checks before starting out: • Clutch and Throttle—Make sure they work smoothly. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Look under the motorcycle for signs of an oil or gas leak. general wear.

• Hands—Hold the handlegrips firmly. • Maintain an adequate space cushion. It is up to you to keep from being the cause of.11 - . adjust the handlebars so your hands are even with or below your elbows. and lane position.is rarely a single cause of any collision. Bending your arms permits you to press on the handlebars without having to stretch. or an unprepared participant in. use your headlight. Also. As a rider. Shifting Gears There is more to shifting gears than simply getting the motorcycle to pick up speed smoothly. make critical decisions. You learn this only through practice and by knowing your abilities and riding within them. don’t point your toes downward—they may get caught between the road and the footpegs. Learning to use the gears when downshifting. Don’t drag your feet or you could be injured and lose control of the motorcycle. Allow yourself enough space when following. any collision. • Be prepared to act. and being passed. To reduce the chances of a collision: • Be visible. brake light. • Feet—Keep your feet firmly on the footpegs for balance. Start with your right wrist flat so you won’t accidentally use too much throttle. • Scan your path of travel. you can’t be sure that others will see you or yield the right of way. being followed. This allows you to use the proper muscles for precision steering. and ride in the best lane position to see and be seen. • Communicate your intentions. speed. Use the proper signals. . • Seat—Sit far enough forward so your arms are slightly bent when holding the handlegrips. Keep your feet near the controls. turn- riDe WithiN YoUr aBilities This handbook cannot teach you how to control direction. Look at least 10 to 15 seconds ahead. passing. Wear proper clothing. • Knees—Keep your knees against the gas tank to help with your balance as you turn the motorcycle. • Identify and separate multiple hazards. and carry them out separates responsible riders from all the rest. Also. Basic vehicle control Body Position To control a motorcycle well: • Posture—Sit so you can use your arms to steer the motorcycle rather than to hold yourself up. The ability to be aware. or balance. Remain alert and know how to carry out proper collision-avoidance skills. lane sharing.

Ride slowly enough when you shift into a lower gear or the motorcycle will lurch and the rear wheel may skid. Or. However. Turn only your head. Use caution and squeeze the brake lever. (Consult your owner’s manual. using the front brake incorrectly on a slippery surface may be hazardous. . REMEMBER: • Use both brakes every time you slow or stop. The front brake is safe to use when you use it properly. although it should be done very carefully. Use both brakes at the same time. some of the traction is used for cornering and less traction is available for stopping. even clutch release especially when downshifting. The front brake is more powerful and can provide at least three-quarters of your total stopping power. using both brakes in a turn is possible.12 - . • If you know the technique. It is best to change gears before starting a turn. they end up crossing into another lane of traffic or going off the road. When riding downhill or shifting into first gear you may need to slow to downshift safely. applying both brakes. or starting on hills is important for safe motorcycle operation. Also. Using both brakes for “normal” stops permits you to develop the proper habit and skill of using both brakes properly. Use four steps for better control: 1. never “grab” it. Work toward a smooth. not your shoulders. Remain in first gear while stopped so you can move out quickly if needed. A skid can occur if you apply too much brake.ing. Braking Your motorcycle has two brakes: one each for the front and rear wheel. When they can’t hold the turn. Shift down through the gears with the clutch as you slow or stop. Look—Look through the turn to where you want to go. they overreact and brake too hard causing a skid and loss of control. Remember to shift smoothly because a sudden change in power to the rear wheel can cause a skid. Your chances of getting out safely depend on your ability to react quickly and properly. You must also be able to swerve around an obstacle. Change to the portion of the lane that helps you see. Other strategies may be appropriate along with the horn.

• Underbrake the front tire and overbrake the rear. • Did not separate braking from swerving or did not choose to swerve when it was appropriate. Swerving or Turning Quickly Sometimes you may not have enough room to stop. you can control the motorcycle on a straightaway if it is upright and going in a straight line. but don’t “grab” it either. then Brake Brake. Don’t be shy about using the front brake. press down on the rear brake. reduce your lean angle and apply more brake pressure until the motorcycle is straight and maximum brake pressure is possible. Squeeze the brake lever firmly with continuing steady pressure. apply both brakes at the same time. The front brake can provide almost three-quarters of your stopping power. If you accidentally lock the rear brake on a good traction surface. The motorcycle should now be straight up and in balance. the best technique is to straighten the motorcycle first and then brake. Always use both brakes at the same time to stop. However. NOTE: Even with a locked rear wheel. If the front wheel locks. release the front brake immediately and then reapply it firmly. An object might appear suddenly in your path or the car ahead might stop abruptly.24 - . you should “straighten” the handlebars. As you slow. Then in the last few feet of stopping. If you must brake while leaning. it may not always be possible to straighten the motorcycle and then stop. even if you use both brakes properly. At the same time. Quick Stops To stop quickly. you can keep it locked until you have completely stopped. The only way to avoid a collision sWerve. Cornering A primary cause of single-vehicle collisions is motorcyclists running wide in a curve or turn and colliding with the roadway or a fixed object. move toward the inside of the curve. Dirt and gravel collect along the sides of the road. • Just before contact. ride in a vehicle’s tire tracks. steel plates. • Gravel roads or where sand and gravel collect. Cautious riders steer clear of roads covered with ice or snow. When slippery. If you encounter a large surface so slippery that you must coast. roll on the throttle slightly to lighten the front end. Wet leaves are just as slippery as wet road surfaces. • Mud. Squeeze the brake lever gradually to avoid locking the front wheel. Surfaces with poor traction include: • Wet pavement. the left tire track will be the best lane position. or travel at a walking pace. especially when wet. If you can’t avoid an icy or snowy surface. or brake. Ride on the least slippery portion of the lane and reduce your speed. turn. Attempting this maneuver at anything other than the slowest of speeds could prove hazardous. Crossing at an angle forces riders to zigzag to stay in the lane. Grooves and Gratings Riding over rain grooves or bridge gratings may cause your motorcycle to weave. squeeze the clutch and coast. ruts.
