Anahata Chakra in the heart.Adhyaya I HATHA YOGA 1. It is Agni-Nadi. Spend half an hour daily in the practice of Asanas and Pranayama. Hatha Yoga concerns with the body and the Prana. 14. Pingala and Sushumna are the three important Nadis in the body. Mudras and the Shad Kriyas under an expert Hatha Yogi. and helps Brahmacharya. 15. Sarvanga develops thyroid gland and bestows good health. It cools the body. Be regular in your practice. Wait for half an hour after finishing Asanas for taking a bath. Kapalabhati (a kind of Pranayama)—are the Shad Kriyas of Hatha Yoga. It helps Brahmacharya and gives longevity. 9. Learn the Asanas. Do Asanas first and then practise Pranayama. Be moderate in eating and sleeping. 23. Regularity is of paramount importance. 4. 6. through Asanas and Pranayama. It strengthens the brain and the brain-centres and improves memory. 5. Hala and Ardhamatsyendra Asanas make the spine elastic. It flows through the left nostril. Ida. 20. Pingala is the Surya-Nadi. Hatha Yoga itself is not the goal. 11. Ida is the Chandra-Nadi. Kundalini passes through the Chakras and joins with Lord Siva in the Sahasrara. They are Muladhara (near the anus). how can you sit for meditation? 13. Hatha means any tenacious practice till the object or end is achieved. 8. 18. 24. There are Six Chakras or lotuses in the body. Sarvanga. Serve always with Atma-Bhava and Narayana-Bhava. Kumbhaka is retention. 26. Sitkari. 28. Puraka is inhalation of breath. Watch for opportunities for service. Kumbhaka gives you longevity and energy. If you are a teacher or a professor. 30. plead for the poor. Control the senses. Clothe the naked. shampoo the painful part. action becomes an inaction. Agami has no binding force as there is no agency or egoism in the sage. 33. An egoistic man alone thinks: “I am the doer. so you reap. without egoism.” Really it is the Guna or Prakriti or the sense that does the action. 32. Kill selfishness. Brahman will you become. Japa is the repetition of any Mantra or Name of the Lord with Bhava and feeling. Nishkriya. Feel you are shampooing the body of the Lord. Keep Twelve Tissue Remedies or some household remedies and treat the poor. 34. tolerance. sympathy and mercy. As you sow. Every Name is filled with countless powers. Vice gives you pain. If you are a doctor. 21. You sow an action. destroys sins and brings the devotee face to face with the Lord. so also the Name of God has the power of burning the sins and desires. Think you are man. if there is no selfish motive. what is wrong. Do not be attached to the work itself. 2. Atman is actionless. Bear insult. Japa removes the impurities of the mind. 35. Sanchita. You must be able to give it up at any moment. There are three kinds of Karma.

Vibrations give rise to definite forms. It is a weapon to destroy the mind. more auspicious than all good things. “Om Namah Sivaya”. viz. Siddha or Sukha Asana for three hours at a stretch. Cover your hand with a towel. Do not do the Japa in a hurried manner. that Sattva or purity is flowing from the Lord to your mind. “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”. wash your hands. Sit on a Kusha-grass seat or deer-skin or rug. 14. This enhances the efficacy of the Japa. only through devotion. 11. Practise meditation also along with Japa. 4 . Gayatri. The repetition of the Mantra again and again generates great spiritual force and momentum and intensifies the spiritual Samskaras or impressions. 7. Repetition of Om Namah Sivaya gives rise to the form of Lord Siva in the mind. so it is called Mantra. This is Japa-Sahita-Dhyana. Gradually Japa will drop and meditation alone will continue. 8. 19. destroys desires and cravings and evil thoughts. revert it and come back again. 10. Keep an alert attention during Japa. Stand up and do the Japa when sleep tries to overpower you. a devotee of Lord Siva. Have four sittings for Japa daily—early morning. Name of the Lord is a boat to cross this Samsara. Use the thumb. 29. and do the Japa for two hours. Have Asana-Jaya or conquest over Asana. Resolve to finish a certain minimum number of Malas before leaving the seat. This conserves body-electricity. Do not repeat it too fast or too slow. Pronounce the Mantra distinctly and without mistakes. Gayatri Mantra or Durga Mantra. The glory of the Name of God cannot be established through reasoning and intellect.

The sixth is like that of a cymbal. O man! Take refuge in the Name. Practise Pranayama for one or two months. the third is the sound of a bell. It becomes absorbed in Brahman or the Absolute. THUS ENDS NADA YOGA 5 . The first sound is chini. Now hear the music of Anahata sounds. Purascharana is repetition of the Mantra Akshara-Laksha. When the mind is absorbed in melodious sound. it does not run after sensual objects. 12. 3. 10. 2. Become indifferent to all sensual objects. Practise Yama (self-restraint). 9. 7. 33. 16. The fifth is like that of a lute. You will develop the divine eye when you hear the ninth. The ninth is like that of a Mridanga. Japa Yoga is the easiest. 13. THUS ENDS JAPA YOGA Adhyaya IV NADA YOGA 1. You will get knowledge of hidden things when you hear the seventh. concentrate on the sound which annihilates the mind. The eighth is like that of a drum. 14. You will have wonderful concentration. 4. You will attain Para Brahman when you hear the tenth. Sit on Padmasana or Siddhasana or Sukhasana. You will hear the ten sounds (Anahata sounds) clearly and enjoy the music of the soul. The sound entraps the mind. Do Japa or Soham with breath (Ajapa Japa). glory to His Name! 35. The sound that you hear will make you deaf to all external sounds. Change your concentration from the gross sound to the subtle. Sound helps to control the mind easily. or Sadachara (right conduct). Japa must become habitual.

prayer. Sakhya (His friendship). Bhakti melts into wisdom in the end. God is nectar. Jayadeva and Gauranga had Madhurya Bhava. Ringing bells and waving lights is Apara Bhakti. Padasevana (service of His Feet). 5. The Name of the Lord is your sole refuge. Name is divine nectar. 17. Have any kind of Bhava that suits your temperament. Sakhya Bhava (friendship). It purifies the heart. 3. The devotee is absorbed in God. Love is God. 8.. 4. Apara Bhakti (lower type of devotion) and Para Bhakti (highest Bhakti or Supreme Love). Madhurya Bhava (the relationship of lover and beloved). 18. Faith is necessary for attaining God-realisation. Faith is the root. Sravana (hearing the Lilas of the Lord). Hanuman had Dasya Bhava. and Atmanivedana (self-surrender). Japa.AMRITA GITA Adhyaya V BHAKTI YOGA 1. shelter and abode. Let me have constant remembrance of Thee. Two have become one now. 20. Give up evil company. Archana (offering flowers). Para Bhakti and Jnana are one. Dasya Bhava (master-servant relation). 9. It is your prop. the Gopis had Sakhya-Bhava. Kirtan (singing His Name). He has only thoughts of God. Kirtan.” 14. 2. Smarana (His remembrance). Vatsalya Bhava (father-son relation). 10. Yasoda and Vishnuchitta had Vatsalya Bhava. Vandana (prostrations). where reason dares not enter. Keep a picture of the Lord and concentrate on it—the face or feet or the whole picture. viz. Take recourse to Satsanga or company of the saints. Take milk. It is love for love’s sake. there is no ritualistic worship. It gushes from one’s pure heart. Bhakti is of two kinds. Om Namo Narayanaya. Nama and Nami are inseparable. study of books on Bhakti are all aids to devotion. 11. Evil company is an enemy of devotion. Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya—mentally. 6 . Develop it again and again. Practise the nine modes of devotion or Nava-vidha Bhakti. God is Prema. 16. There is no selfish expectation here. Let my mind be ever fixed On Thy Lotus Feet. In Para Bhakti. 6. Bhakti grows gradually just as you grow a flower or a tree in a garden.. 7. fruits. Bhishma had Santa Bhava. In Supreme Love. Cultivate Bhakti in the garden of your heart gradually. 13. It redeems and saves. The five kinds of Bhavas are: Santa Bhava. 19. Bhakti is the greatest power on this earth. Faith can take you to the inner chambers of the Lord. Let me sing Thy glory always. Faith can work wonders. sometimes verbally when the mind wanders. The devotee wants God and God alone. Sattvic food is a help to devotion. Repeat your Ishta Mantra—Om Namah Sivaya. Arjuna and Guha had Sakhya Bhava. 15. the devotee forgets his self entirely. God is love. service of saints. Pray to the Lord thus. Communion with the Lord is the fruit. Service of saints is the shower. Then visualise the picture in your heart or the space between the two eyebrows. etc. Dasyam (servant-Bhava). viz. Devotion is the seed. Faith can move mountains. Bhakti is supreme love towards God. “O Adorable Lord of Compassion and Love! Give me faith and devotion. 12.

Do Anushtan frequently. He is full of humility. Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (superconscious state). Suka Deva was a Jnani-Bhakta. and Aparigraha (non-covetousness). 2. 27. 30. It makes him perfect. compassion and kindness. It aims at controlling all thought-waves or mental modifications. Dharana (concentration). Shall I wash Thy Feet with holy water. Satyam (truthfulness). This is an easy way of worship of the Lord. Draupadi was an Arta-Bhaktini. Thy Will be done’. etc. Yama consists of five parts. He is nearer to you than your jugular vein. Observe Mouna or silence and do Japa and meditate in an intense manner. viz. He has equal vision and a balanced mind. 7 . the light that you burn as waving lights to the Lord. Raja Yoga is an exact science. Nachiketas was Jijnasu-Bhakta. 26. Svarabhanga (choking of the voice) are marks or Lingas of devotion. your daily walk as perambulation to the Lord. Offer all your actions and the fruits of the actions unto the Lord. Ahimsa (non-injury). 24. THUS ENDS BHAKTI YOGA OR THE YOGA OF DEVOTION Adhyaya VI RAJA YOGA 1. 29. 23. Brahmacharya (celibacy). It transmutes a man into divinity. all is Thine. Where Hatha Yoga ends. Hatha Yogi starts his Sadhana with his body and Prana. in all objects. Consider your house as a temple of the Lord. tries to control the mind. every word you speak as the Japa of the Lord’s Name. Behold Him in every face. Asana (posture). He sees God in all beings. too. every action as service of Lord. mentally to the Lord. hatred. 22. there Raja Yoga begins. Live on milk and fruits for a week. He practises Asanas and Pranayama and through control of Prana. It bestows on him everlasting peace and bliss. incense. O Lord? Then practise regular meditation. Svadhyaya (study of religious books and repetitions of Mantras). Vikshipta (gathering). 18. Rajas and Tamas. Any practice which steadies the mind and makes it one-pointed is Abhyasa. A Raja Yogi practises Samyama or the combined practice of Dharana. steady. 22. 26. 20. Be indifferent. Sleep. It removes all sorts of distractions. the more the evil thoughts will return with redoubled force. Real Raja Yoga starts from concentration. Control the mind by Abhyasa (practice) and Vairagya (dispassion). Then you will attain illumination. 8. Regularity is of paramount importance. not mixing much with people are all aids to concentration. Reduce your wants. They will bring about your downfall. The practice of Yama is a Mahavrata. You will attain Samadhi or the superconscious state. Sattva and Rajas are subordinated. joy and cheerfulness. Speak that which generates love. It is Spirit. Be self-controlled. the wise. who is balanced in pleasure and pain. Control the senses and mind. Slay them ruthlessly. A liberated Sage is free from passion. one who is filled with inertia and so sleeps much. and cow’s ghee. This is austerity of body. anger. bitter-gourd. Atman is greater than the intellect. plantain stem and flower. substantial and agreeable.. This is austerity of speech. conceit. too much salted things. or one who sleeps very little and is ever engaged in Rajasic activity is also unfit for Yoga. When Rajas predominates. Be in tune with the Infinite. 40. A glutton is unfit for Yoga. Take green gram. It causes heedlessness. bland. fish. laziness. Sattva is purity. honour and dishonour. Repetition of Subrahmanya Mantra ‘Om Saravanabhavaya Namah’ will give success in any undertaking and make you glorious. ‘Om Hanumanthaya Namah’ will bestow victory and strength.
