DATUM

THE DATUM SYSTEM IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE LANGUAGE GEOMETRIC TOLEREANCING. THE DATUM SYSTEM IS A SET OF SYMBOLS AND RULES THAT COMMUNICATES TO THE DRAWING USER HOW DIMENSIONAL MEASUREMENTS ARE TO BE MADE.

THE DATUM SYSTEM PROVIDES THREE IMPORTANT BENEFITS: IT AIDS IN MAKING REPEATABLE DIMENSIONAL MEASUREMENTS. IT AIDS IN COMMUNICATING PART FUNCTIONAL RELATIONALSHIP IT AIDS IN MAKING THE DIMENSIONAL MEASUREMENT AS INTENDED BY THE DESIGNER

• Three types of geometric tolerances exist: size, location and form tolerances. • Size tolerances controls the size ( lengths/diameters) of part features. • Location tolerance controls position and concentricity of various features. • Form tolerance controls the shape of individual features (eg flatness of a single surface) or related features ( eg parallelism or perpendicularity of two surfaces. • In order to communicate geometric tolerances with their related information effectively and concisely on engineering drawings, ANSI and ISO have developed a set of standards and symbology for dimensioning and tolerancing.
