Straight to the Heart of Acts Straight to the Heart of Revelation

About the Author
Phil Moore leads a thriving church in Wimbledon, London. He also serves as a Bible teacher and evangelist within the Newfrontiers family of churches. After graduating from Cambridge University in 1995, Phil spent time on the mission field and then in the business world. He spent four years working twice through the Bible in the original languages, and has now delivered an accessible series of devotional commentaries which convey timeless truths in a fresh and contemporary manner.

Here are the first three volumes in a series of devotional commentaries for those who appreciate the insights and sound research found in commentaries but find scholarly writing dry and lacking in personal application. The Straight to the Heart series does not cover the whole text, but focuses on key sections which communicate the main themes of each book. Although the tone is light, the text is full of useful application and backed by substantial scholarship. Its clear, thoughtprovoking insights will feed both mind and soul. The Straight to the Heart Commentary series will total 25 volumes covering both the Old and New Testaments, the next two volumes will cover Genesis and 1 & 2 Corinthians.

“Phil Moore has served us magnificently . . . He writes so relevantly and with such submission to biblical revelation.”

Our Witchdoctors Are Too Weak
Davey & Marie Jank

About the Authors

When Davey Jank started a new life as a missionary among a remote tribe in the Amazon jungle, he entered a world most of us will never encounter: a world where witchcraft and shamanism are the trade of the powerful; where fear drives a timid and isolated society to acts of desperation and the brink of despair; where God’s Word has not been heard. Davey and his wife, Marie—and the others who later join in the mission—struggle to decipher and learn the unwritten language of the tribe. It takes years of comical and tragic misunderstandings, correction, and painstaking effort. Years in which the Wilo people, sometimes patiently and sometimes not so patiently, wait to learn what “God’s Talk” says. Our Witchdoctors Are Too Weak is Davey and Marie’s honest and inspiring account of their more than ten years among the Wilos. Their modern-day miracle is sure to revitalize the reader’s desire to spread God’s word to every corner of the world.

“Your monthly letters are like chapters from a book I don’t want to put down. You make missions real to me in all their grub and glory.”

A book to help Christians share their faith effectively through the development of good listening and dialogue skills

What do you say when a friend asks you a tough question? More importantly, how do you respond to them—to the questioner rather than the question? Reasons for My Hope provides model dialogues— imaginative encounters—that demonstrate both the opportunities and the challenges of sharing one’s faith. Many enthusiastic Christians tend to rely on stock answers without hearing the deeper resonances of the questions raised by non-Christians. If we can develop the sensitivity to hear different needs, experiences, and interests, and can learn to respond without offering textbook solutions, then a true dialogue can develop. “My aim is to help Christians to explain their faith to their non-Christian friends, family and acquaintances, and answer the questions that often arise,” explains Benno van den Toren. “This book focuses on understanding the questions and objections that are often raised in such conversations. Consequently, this book doesn’t aim to give instant answers . . . The main thing is not to have a battery of the right arguments and answers, but rather to develop the right attitude: a genuine interest in everyone we meet.”

An excellent and much needed contribution to Christian apologetics by an able theologian who has the common touch. Buy it. Read it. Lend it.”

—Canon Dr Michael Green, Wycliffe Hall, Oxford

There is a God—we are created by God, the universe is created by God, and “all things work together for those who love God.” As Christians, we believe that our faith is not just a set of rules but a journey. On this journey there is a “with the flow” way to go, and an “against the flow” way to go. But how do we know which is which? What is the road of blessing? Penelope Wilcock believes that, deep inside us, we can come to recognize what is really, truly of God. Using the markers of Scripture, conscience, nature, observation, the faith community, and the faith tradition, Penelope helps the reader find God’s road of blessing in regard to money, relationships, the home, and the acceptance of responsibility. The outcome may not bring prosperity, but it will probably include joy! “Every now and then, I see something move, and I feel the reality of it, and I start to live it in the everyday; touch the live pulse of something that is more than a theory or a doctrine. A defining truth that gives structure and meaning to the relative chaos of my life. “Then, when I’ve been on that trail for a while, and I know it works; know the truth of it down to the soles of my feet, know I can trust it—I want to share it. I don’t mean just a bright idea: I mean the sort of truth you can trust so completely that you can rely on it for your income; the sort of truth you can trust your children to; truth that you can lean on when you have to decide who to marry and how to live.”

The corrupt cop busted by God

Running Scared
Robert Leon Davis

For 22 years he was a fugitive— the corrupt cop busted by God

About the Author
Robert Leon Davis was a respected police officer in New Orleans who became involved in crime and fled arrest, living in the backwoods of America and Canada for over two decades before turning himself in. He now has an extensive speaking and teaching ministry. You can hear him on his weekly radio show “Watch the Cop,” which airs on WDL1450 every Tuesday.

Robert Leon Davis was a street kid from a tough community. Raised on the brink of poverty, he and his siblings often went hungry, but with the help of a family in the neighborhood, he beat the odds and studied criminal law at Loyola University and joined the New Orleans police department in 1975. He began his career with aspirations of being a great cop, but before long he was exposed to a darker side of law enforcement. While partnered with a veteran, Davis first witnessed an officer violating the very laws he had vowed to uphold—and he shared in his crime. One compromise led to another, and Davis soon was caught and faced a substantial prison term. Cops in prison don’t last long. He fled. Davis found himself a fugitive, living off the land in remote forests in the United States and Canada to elude capture. His church upbringing was abandoned in anger. For over twenty years he hid, becoming an expert survivalist. He might still be running, but through a stranger’s prayer the angry atheist realized he was weary of hiding. Slowly he yielded his life to God and eventually gave himself in. But when the New Orleans DA dusted off his file, what would his sentence be? Today, Robert Davis is a committed Christian and motivational speaker. He uses his extraordinary experiences to share his message of hope and redemption to both adults and children.

I Am Your Father
Mark Stibbe

What Every Heart Needs to Know

About the Author
The Reverend Dr. Mark Stibbe is the founder and leader of the Father’s House Trust, a Christian charity dedicated to bringing the Father’s love to the fatherless. He has written many books, including The 100 Verse Bible and The User’s Guide to Christian Beliefs and is a popular speaker both in the United Kingdom and throughout the world. He is a frequent visitor to the United States.

In January 2009, Dr. Mark Stibbe left his role as the senior leader of a highly successful Anglican congregation. Taking a big step of faith, he founded a ministry called The Father’s House, dedicated to taking the Father’s love to the fatherless and bringing an end to the global pandemic of fatherlessness. Mark took this risk because he is convinced that our society has been deeply damaged by absent or brutal fathers. The churches can offer a solution—a healing relationship with our Heavenly Father—but many Christians have been poorly fathered and are bound by the legacy of this wound. As long as believers are restricted by the chains of their past, their churches will not be a part of the solution to fatherlessness; they will be a part of the problem. “The whole planet is waiting for Christian believers to rise up as the adopted sons and daughters of Abba, Father.” I Am Your Father is designed to help free Christians from their father wounds, so that they are then capable of playing their part in healing our fatherless world. In part 1, Mark takes a detailed look at fatherlessness. He describes the different ways in which fathers can hurt their children and the ensuing toxic results. In part 2, he goes deeper, defining the wound as “the orphan heart” and describing the main symptoms of this condition in peoples’ lives. In part 3, he shows how Christians can find true healing through experiencing the spirit of adoption and by using seven keys to freedom. Mark uses his own story of being orphaned and adopted as the backdrop to this teaching.

“This is one of the most important and profound messages of our day, and is sure to be a central part of what God uses to bring healing to the body of Christ.” Features and Benefits

Some valuable books have been stolen from Master John Wyclif, the well known scholar and Bible translator. He calls upon his friend and former pupil, Hugh de Singleton, to investigate. Hugh’s investigation leads him to Oxford where he again encounters Kate, the only woman who has tempted him to leave bachelor life behind, but Kate has another serious suitor. As Hugh’s pursuit of Kate becomes more successful, mysterious accidents begin to occur. Are these accidents tied to the missing books, or to his pursuit of Kate? One of the stolen books turns up alongside the drowned body of a poor Oxford scholar. Another accident? Hugh certainly doesn’t think so, but it will take all of his surgeon’s skills to prove. So begins another delightful and intriguing tale from the life of Hugh de Singleton, surgeon in the medieval village of Bampton. Masterfully researched by medieval scholar Mel Starr, the setting of the novel can be visited and recognized in modern-day England. Enjoy more of Hugh’s dry wit, romantic interests, evolving faith, and dogged determination as he pursues his third case as bailiff of Bampton.

Steve and his classmates at the Chefoo school in China—for the most part the children of missionaries— were interned in 1942. Resentment of the Japanese, particularly the brutal prison guards, became a way of life. Eric Liddell, by then a missionary and fellow internee, and a hero to the boy, charged him with an impossible challenge—pray for his enemies. But was it really possible to pray for the men who stood guard over them with guns? Painfully, reluctantly, Steve began to pray and as he continued to pray, his heart was profoundly changed. At the end of the war the China Inland Mission (now OMF International) was seeking young men willing to go to Japan. Steve trained, packed, and went. Thus began Steve’s lifelong love of Japan. Over the years he would tussle with a culture where courtesy wins over truth; where suicide is an honorable choice; where to be foreign is to be forever alien. Time after time he would encounter miracles of healing, provision, and protection as God looked after him, his wife, Evelyn, and their growing family. In a resistant culture—that at the time had been recently bombed by the Christian nation of America—he would see many come to Christ. This is the story of how a boy’s grudging prayers were remarkably answered.

The definitive guide to gospel music, from early spirituals to urban gospel
An Illustrated History of Gospel
Steve Turner

About the Author
Steve Turner is an experienced music journalist and biographer. His books include Trouble Man: The Life and Death of Marvin Gaye, The Man Called Cash, and Amazing Grace. His articles have appeared in Rolling Stone, Mojo, Q, and The Times, among others.

Far beyond its stereotypic image of robed choirs, gospel music— through its solo singers and quartets, its impresarios and recording companies—has helped to give voice to the history of black people in America as well as shaping more obviously secular musical forms such as blues and rock ’n’ roll. In this compelling and lively study, Steve Turner tells the story of gospel music against the backdrop of the social and economic changes taking place in the United States over a century and a half. He traces how the music expressed and nurtured the spiritual life of African Americans who embraced Christianity in the context of slavery and then in segregation and how it now occupies a prominent place in the worshipping life of Christians, black and white, throughout America and around the world. In addition Steve Turner also traces gospel music’s impact as a musical form, its movement into the mainstream of popular music and its major period of popularity and influence in the middle decades of the twentieth century. The book also features original interviews conducted by the author with many of the legendary figures of gospel music and is illustrated with photographs throughout.

Features and Benefits
• Thoroughly researched yet accessibly written by an acclaimed music journalist and biographer • A history of gospel music that explores its global reach and social and cultural impact far beyond its African American and church origins • Charts a compelling but largely untold thread of American life over the last two centuries

A beautifully illustrated introduction to an ancient spiritual practice
Brian Draper

Illuminating the Inner Path

About the Author
Brian Draper is the author of several books including Searching 4 Faith and Spiritual Intelligence, which was described by Douglas Copeland as “inspiring” and by Oliver James as “a wake up call for us all.” He lectured at the Institute for Contemporary Christianity for several years and is now a freelance speaker and business consultant.

Mysterious and alluring, labyrinths have been in use for over 4,000 years as a means of exploring one’s spiritual journey and searching for meaning and guidance. Unlike a maze, where there are decisions to be made and the mind can be tricked, the labyrinth is a unicursal or “one-path” design—a path laid out for the seeker, much like our own spiritual paths, to which we must surrender, following God’s guidance. Christian labyrinths date back to the fourth century (in Algeria), although the most famous instances came later (Chartres in the thirteenth century, for example). Recent years have seen a revival of interest in this practice as a powerful physical re-creation of the inner life. Illustrated with labyrinths from different designs, locations, and ages, this unique volume is an inspiring, meditative guide to this ancient and modern spiritual practice.

Features and Benefits
• The author is a recognized spirituality expert and guide • An introduction to a long-neglected spiritual practice of the Christian faith • Will appeal to those looking to supplement their traditional religious practice and those looking for spiritual experience

Over recent years some critics of Christianity have claimed that while Jesus was a gifted teacher and a man of unparalleled kindness, St Paul was the true founder of Christianity, which he based on a delusional mistake: the idea that Jesus was God. This theory has found its way into academia, churches, newspapers, and, most recently, novels. In Did St Paul Get Jesus Right? respected New Testament scholar David Wenham looks at the historical evidence for such claims. Comparing the life and message of Jesus with the writings of St Paul, he offers a thoughtful exploration of their relationship, concluding that far from imagining Christianity, Paul was the messenger of an inherited faith.

Features and Benefits
• Jesus of Nazareth and the origins of Christianity are of perennial interest as shown by the success of Dan Brown, Anne Rice, and now Philip Pullman’s The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ • Wenham provides a lucid, intelligently argued consideration of the long-standing argument that Paul “invented” Christianity by “making” Jesus divine • David Wenham is a highly respected scholar on Paul and on the Gospels
