Finding healing through forgiveness

The Forgiveness Project

The Startling Discovery of How to Overcome Cancer, Find Health, and Achieve Peace Michael S. Barry

about the author
All religions value forgiveness, but only Christianity requires it. Internalizing anger is destructive to our spiritual health and can destroy families, marriages, and even churches. But what about our physical health? Is there a relationship between a spirit of unforgiveness and cancer? Between forgiveness and healing? How do you really forgive? After thorough medical, theological, and sociological research and clinical experience at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), author and pastor Michael Barry has made a startling discovery: the immune system and forgiveness are very much connected. Through the inspiring stories of five cancer patients, Barry helps readers identify—and overcome—the barriers that prevent healing and peace. See how a breast cancer patient named Jayne experienced spiritual and physical renewal when she learned to forgive. Meet Cathy whose story illustrates how forgiveness can positively change relationships. Be inspired by Sharon’s story of spontaneous remission. With each true account comes proven strategies, tested and used by CTCA, that readers can implement to find peace with their past, relief from their hatefulness, and hope for healing. Competing titles may talk about forgiveness, but none specifically address the connection between forgiveness and physical health or offer forgiveness as a specific step toward healing from cancer. The Forgiveness Project presents scientific findings in easyto-understand, accessible language and offers practical steps to help Christians let go of past wrongs and find peace.
Michael S. Barry (DMin, Fuller Theological Seminary; MA, Princeton Theological Seminary) is Director of Pastoral Care at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, where he specializes in the connection between spirituality and health. He has served in the ministry for over twenty years and has appeared on numerous radio and television shows around the country. He is the author of A Reason for Hope (David C. Cook, 2004), A Season for Hope (Honor Books, 2005), and The Art of Caregiving (David C. Cook, 2007).

one teenager’s choices in the shadow of wwII will change him forever
How Huge the Night
A Novel Heather Munn and Lydia Munn
Fifteen-year-old Julien Losier just wants to fit in. But after his family moves to a small village in central France in hopes of outrunning the Nazis, he is suddenly faced with bigger challenges than the taunting of local teens. Nina Krenkel left her country to obey her father’s dying command: Take your brother and leave Austria. Burn your papers. Tell no one you are Jews. Alone and on the run, she arrives in Tanieux, France, dangerously ill and in despair. Thrown together by the chaos of war, Julien begins to feel the terrible weight of the looming conflict and Nina fights to survive. As France falls to the Nazis, Julien struggles with doing what is right, even if it is not enough—and wonders whether or not he really can save Nina from almost certain death. Based on the true story of the town of Le Chambon—the only French town honored by Israel for rescuing Jews from the Holocaust—How Huge the Night is a compelling, coming-of-age drama that will keep teens turning the pages as it teaches them about a fascinating period of history and inspires them to think more deeply about their everyday choices.

about the authors
Heather Munn was born in Northern Ireland and grew up in southern France where her parents were missionaries like their parents before them. She has a BA in literature from Wheaton College and now lives in a Christian intentional community in rural Illinois, where she and her husband, Paul, host free spiritual retreats for the poor, especially those transitioning out of homelessness or addiction. When not writing or hosting, she works on the communal farm. Lydia Munn, daughter of missionary parents, grew up in Brazil. She received a BA in literature from Wheaton College, and an MA in Bible from Columbia Graduate School of Bible and Missions. With her husband, Jim, she has worked in church planting and Bible teaching since 1983, notably in St. Etienne, near the small town in the central mountains of France which forms the background of How Huge the Night. The Munns now live in Grenoble, France.

a new cover for a popular book from a best-selling author
Conquering the Fear of Failure
Erwin W. Lutzer

Lessons from the Life of Joshua

about the author
The fear of failure afflicts us all. It erodes faith, deflates courage, and prevents victorious living. But fear doesn’t have to haunt us anymore. In this newly repackaged edition of his popular book, best-selling author and beloved pastor Erwin W. Lutzer offers a healing alternative that releases Christians from attitudes of defeat. Using lessons from the life of Joshua, Lutzer teaches what Christians can do every day to see the promises of God fulfilled in their lives. From learning to listen to the right voice to living with a bad decision, from embracing the power of prayer to overcoming obstacles, this handbook will guide readers through the pitfalls of spiritual growth. “My prayer is that through studying Joshua we all will take one more giant step toward spiritual maturity,” writes Lutzer. “In the process we shall discover that God is all-powerful and worthy of our trust.” Written in the tone that made Lutzer a best-selling author of more than twenty books, Conquering the Fear of Failure shows readers how to focus on God and His promises, not upon circumstances or setbacks, so we may live a faith-filled, victorious life.
Erwin W. Lutzer (ThM, Dallas Theological Seminary; MA, Loyola University; LLD, Simon Greenleaf School of Law) is senior pastor of the historic Moody Church in Chicago, as well as a popular conference and radio speaker. The church spends $1.5 million for every one new follower of Jesus. Apple sells 26 iPads every minute. What is it that makes Apple so exciting and Jesus so boring? What is it that compels someone to bring their iPod everywhere and their Bible nowhere? In a word: marketing. Jesus is a life-changing product with lousy salespeople—people who are intimidated and embarrassed by the word “evangelism” and who show more enthusiasm for their gadgets than their God. What would life look like if we could market our faith like Nike and Apple market their products? Using examples from these and other successful companies, author Tim Sinclair challenges Christians to throw out their casual attitudes toward faith and sign on for a marketing campaign for the Savior. Other books on evangelism encourage readers to share their faith but fall short of practical application and fail to address intimidation. Written with the wit and wisdom of an experienced marketer, Branded peels away the feelings of fear and shows readers how to share their faith in ways that are creative, effective . . . and fun!

a spiritual road map for daily living

True North

Choosing God in the Frustrations of Life Gary Heim and Lisa Heim

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 niv) Every day we face some kind of frustration: flat tires, flooded basements, wounding words, a broken body, a troubled marriage—trouble comes in all shapes and sizes and can happen when we least expect it. While everyone struggles, few people have learned to struggle well. But it’s not impossible! Frustrations arise when we look to people and things of this world to fill our desires, rather than to the only One who can really satisfy us. True North offers a unique, biblical paradigm that gives understanding and help to turn to God in the frustrations of life. Frustration often causes us to “go south” and react in the flesh. We grumble and grasp. God calls us to “go north” and respond to hardship with wisdom and redemptive love. Combining biblical insight with personal stories, practical help, and compelling examples, authors Gary and Lisa Heim encourage readers to turn from self-centered grumbling and grasping to Christ-centered gratitude and giving. As they read stories of hardships and trials, successes and profits, readers will see how frustrations can actually help them grow in their personal lives, in their marriages, in their parenting, and in their ministries. Believing that learning to live for God through all of life’s frustration is an intentional activity for every day, the Heims also provide discussion questions at the end of each chapter to help readers apply biblical truths to situations where frustrations loom. Perfect for use in ministry settings or as a handbook for personal growth, Truth North shows readers how to embark on the life-giving adventure of walking with God.

about the authors
Gary Heim is pastor of Small Groups and Discipleship at Blythefield Hills Baptist Church in Rockford, Michigan; an adjunct professor at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary; and a retreat and seminar speaker. He is a limited licensed psychologist in Michigan where he had a private counseling practice for over ten years and was a staff counselor for RBC Ministries. Married to Lisa for over twenty-five years with two collegeage children, Gary enjoys hunting, fly fishing, and backpacking. Lisa Heim (MA, Grace Theological Seminary) is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Michigan where she has had a private practice for the last twenty years. Lisa has been married to Gary for over twenty-five years and together they are the proud parents of two collegeage children. In her spare time Lisa enjoys reading, walking, kayaking, home decorating, and gardening.

Fresh spiritual formation primer that helps Christians see the world as God sees the world
Christian Contours

How a Biblical Worldview Shapes the Mind and Heart Douglas S. Huffman, editor

The world around us places constant strain on Christians, who must “be in the world but not of the world” (John 17:11–19). How can Christians have an everyday influence on the world without it wrongfully influencing them and how can the basics of the historic Christian faith be lived out amidst competing worldviews? Christian Contours addresses these questions through essays on the basics of Christian worldview by Daryl N. Aaron, Ardel B. Caneday, Paul Kjoss Helseth, Douglas S. Huffman, Mark H. Muska, Randy W. Nelson, and James G. Raymo and Dale R. Hutchcraft, and Walter J. Schultz. Part 1 addresses the basics of worldview thinking and its relationship to the historic doctrines of the Christian faith. This includes such issues as what is meant by a “worldview,” the relationship of one’s worldview to truth, and the impossibility of equally true but competing worldviews. A crucial chapter frames the historic Christian faith as a worldview—as something more than a traditional add-on to an otherwise secular way of living. Part 2 addresses the believer’s personal responsibilities in light of the Christian worldview. This includes such issues as fundamental Christian disciplines (Bible study, prayer, worship, handling temptation, etc.), interaction with other Christians, and the challenges of interaction with those who do not share the Christian worldview. This spiritual formation primer will guide the reader to worldview thinking and integrity in their Christian life.

about the editor
Douglas S. Huffman is professor and chair of Biblical and Theological Studies at Northwestern College in Minnesota. He is coeditor of God Under Fire: Modern Scholarship Reinvents God (Zondervan, 2002), editor of How Then Shall We Choose? Three Views on God’s Will and Decision Making (Kregel Publications, 2009), and author of The Handy Guide to New Testament Greek: Grammar, Syntax, and Diagramming (Kregel Academic & Professional, 2010).

A Passion for the Fatherless exposes believers to the Scriptural mandate to care for orphans, helps them understand why God has issued that call, and equips them to joyfully respond to that call. Bennett provides a sturdy theological foundation for a ministry to the disenfranchised— the orphan—and then shows how churches can build on these biblical foundations to implement or improve an orphan care program and to equip care-givers. With “how-to” practicality, this book focuses on total orphan care ministry and not just adoption, including a wide range of activities intended to get the whole church involved: domestic and international adoption, foster care, counseling, congregational funding, overseas mission trips, prayer ministry, and so on. The temptation in a church can be to see orphan care as a ministry for couples of child-bearing age. This approach fails to make wise use of the incredible resources of energetic young people, empty-nesters with newfound freedom, or older saints who have some time with which they desire to be good stewards. A Passion for the Fatherless includes practical and encouraging stories of how other churches and believers have cared for orphans, and each chapter contains a study guide so that a group leader could use the book in a small-group bible study. It encourages the church to retain “its strong biblical philosophy of ministry while simultaneously being obedient in so-called social ministries, like orphan care.” “This book is based on a careful study of what the Bible has to say about [orphan care] (and the answer, is plenty!), and why we cannot ignore the most helpless and abandoned of God’s creation without grieving the heart of God. All who are in Christian ministry should read it and ask: How should we get involved?” —Dr. Erwin Lutzer, Moody Church, Chicago

new textbook for missions presenting evangelical methods of contextualization in communicating the gospel
Contextualization in World Missions
Mapping and Assessing Evangelical Models A. Scott Moreau

about the author
A. Scott Moreau (DMiss, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) served fourteen years on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ, ten of those in Africa. In 1991, he accepted a position as professor of missions and intercultural studies at Wheaton College Graduate School, where he is now professor and takes turns serving as department chair. The general editor for Evangelical Dictionary of World Missions (Baker, 2000) and a significant contributor to the past three editions of the Missions Handbook, he is editor of the Encountering World Missions series, coauthor of the “Missions on the Web” series, editor for Evangelical Missions Quarterly, and managing editor for The Network for Strategic Missions “KnowledgeBase.”

Contextualization is the art of translating ideas into a particular situation, place, or culture. It is fundamental to communication, which makes contextualization essential in missions. This textbook pulls together and maps the variety of evangelical approaches to contextualization. Introductory classes on contextualization and missionary preparation institutes will appreciate this valuable textbook. In section one, Moreau explores foundations that make it possible to see the variety of evangelical models more clearly. He looks at the ways evangelical models have been characterized in the literature, and he highlights the main concerns of evangelicals in their contextualizing efforts. Moreau explains several guiding ideas and analytic tools that show how evangelicals “lean into” contextualization. In section two, Moreau describes how evangelical models of contextualization can be split into four primary categories based on the directional flow of each: linear, dialogical, cyclical (spiral or helix), and organic. For each category, Moreau explains what he mean by the category name, portrays one or more models from the category, and presents selected contextual practices that evangelicals use which fit the category. This arrangement makes categorization easier than other options and does not frame the models in ways that bias their evaluation. Contextualization in World Missions will guide mission-minded readers to an informed plan for spreading the gospel effectively. While written with a theoretical perspective, Contextualization in World Missions also provides real-world examples to provoke both thought and action.

what would change if Christ came into your church?

How Christ Came to Church
The Pastor’s Dream A Spiritual Autobiography A. J. Gordon with A. T. Pierson Scott M. Gibson, editor
A spiritual classic by pastor and evangelist A. J. Gordon published just after Gordon’s death in 1895. This volume tells the story of an actual dream that Gordon had, and how dreaming that Jesus attended his church and heard him preach brought life to his dead church and electrified his ministry. The issues Gordon raises and the insights he shares are relevant to today’s pastor. There is a conclusion by A. T. Pierson another world-renowned pastor of his era, who followed Spurgeon at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. This edition of A. J. Gordon’s classic is printed in recognition of the 175th anniversary of Gordon’s birthday and the 125th anniversary of Gordon College and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. After Gordon’s story, his closest friend, A. T. Pierson, provides reflections on the significance of this nineteenth-century leader’s experiences. Also, Scott Gibson, current professor at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, provides a brief introduction.

He was a contemporary and friend of many Christian leaders, including Dwight Moody, A. J. Gordon, George Mueller (whose biography he wrote), and Charles Spurgeon. Scott M. Gibson (DPhil, University of Oxford) directs the Center for Preaching and the A.J. Gordon Guild, the PhD program in association with London School of Theology.
