Dr. Aung San Suu Kyi c/o Canadian Friends of Burma

Dear Dr Aung San Suu Kyi, I am writing to request that you honour Carleton University by sending a message on the occasion of the university conferring upon you the Doctor of Laws horis causa in absentia on February 22 . The degree is in recognition of a distinguished contribution to people throughout the world who are striving to attain democracy, human rights and ethnic conciliation by peaceful means. Every so often, the chant of "freedom" echoes dramatically around the world. People lay down their lives in its name. You sacrificed your own freedom for your beliefs. Yours was not a single act of courage performed in a moment of passion. It was a collection of millions of moments of sober, patient determination. Minutes. Days. Years. Carleton University wishes to recognize you as one of the most remarkable, self-sacrificing figures of our century. We consider you to be one ofthe most determined, courageous women of all time. Like many great people, you acted without violence and with great dignity. The Honourable Flora Isabel MacDonald will deliver an address on the occasion of the honorary degree on February 22 . She has devoted herself to humanitarian work since retiring from Canadian politics . She will recount her meeting with you. Her speech will reflect on the extraordinary lesson you share with us in humility, courage, tenacity, strength, beauty and peace. We are extremely grateful to the kind support of the Canadian friends of Burma who will be delivering this letter to you. I thank you for the kind consideration you will give this request. Carleton University has approximately 24,000 students and is located in Ottawa. On February 22, in your honour, we will be joined by faculty and students, political representatives, Ambassadors representing countries around the world, and members of the non-governmental agency community. Thank you for your kind consideration of this request. Sincerely yours,

Roseann O'Reilly Runte President and Vice-Chancellor
