INTRODUCTION
WIND....
• Wind is the form of
solar energy.

• The term Wind energy

or wind power
describe the process by
which the wind is used
to create mechanical
power or electricity.
PRINCIPLE
• The first law of
thermodynamics
tells us the energy out
of the wind turbine over
a certain amount of time
has to equal the energy
that went into the
turbine during the same
amount of time
WIND TURBINE
• like aircraft propeller
blades , or in other
words it is the
opposite side of a fan.
• It converts the  kinetic
energy in wind into the
mechanical energy of
a rotating shaft
MECHANISM
INSIDE THE WIND TURBINE
• Anemometer
• Controller
starts up the machine at
wind speeds of about 8
to 16 miles per hour
(mph) and shuts off the
machine at about 65 mph
• Blades
• Shaft
• Gear box
increase the rotational
speeds from about 30 to 60
rotations per minute (rpm)
to about 1200 to 1500 rpm
• Generator
An off-the-shelf induction
generator that produces 60-
cycle AC electricity.
HEIGHT OF A TOWER
• Towers are made
from tubular steel or
steel lattice.
Generating the power
CAPACITY DETERMINING FACTORS

• Wind velocity
• Tower Height
• Air density
• Blade Radius
GRID MANAGEMENT

• Grid systems
I. Collection of wind by
equipment
II. Cycling on certain
time scales
PREDICTING THE WIND
• Variability

• Penetration

• Storing energy
CAPACITY FACTOR
• Ratio of Electrical
Energy produced in a
given period of time to
the electrical energy
that could have been
produced at continuous
maximum power
operation during the
same period
What’s New in Wind Power
ADVANTAGES
I. Easy Availability of
wind (source)
II. Renewable
III. No pollution
IV. Environmental friendly
V. No emission of Green
House Gasses
VI. Minimum use of land
Disadvantages
• Non dispatch able
Energy:-
A term for an energy
system that cannotbe
expected to provide
continuous output to
furnish power.
• Noise pollution
Features
REMEDIAL ACTIONS
• Aforrestation
• Aerodynamic designs
have increased diameter
and are light weight
• Permanent magnets are
used in turbines to reduce
dimensions and wieght
Aero Turbines
Features
• Double helix turbine
• Propellers resemble
an electric beater
• Can work in heavy
snowfall too
• Urbane friendly
Offshore Technology
• Off shore turbines
look similar to those
onshore with design
modifications.
Feasibility in Pakistan

• Wind corridor exists between Gharo and

Keti Bandar in Baluchistan that can
produce 40,000 to 50,000 MW of
electricity.
• Many rivers and lakes are in Pakistan.
