Matthew 11:12, And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven
SUFFERETH VIOLENCE, and the violent take it by force.

Luke 16:16, The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is
preached, and every man PRESSETH INTO it.

There are several ways of interpreting these verses. The Amplified says:

Luke 16:16
Until John came, there were the Law and the Prophets; since then the good news (the Gospel) of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone strives violently to go in [would force his[a]own way rather than God's way into it].

This translation says that some were trying to enter through physical force (the zealots) like it was a physical kingdom, and the kingdom cannot be entered into by violence or force.

The other way of interpreting is that men were pressing into the kingdom. They were taking it by force. This violence and force is not a physical violence because the kingdom is not a physical kingdom. Those coming into the kingdom had to

press through the religious opposition of the Pharisees and others who were shutting up the KINGDOM.

John 18:36
Jesus answered, My KINGDOM is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants FIGHT, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

Matthew 23:13
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

The VIOLENCE and PRESSING was a HOLY PASSION and ZEAL to enter the KINGDOM. The KINGDOM was not for the apathetic or uninterested. It was not for those who were unwilling to press beyond the opposition. The KINGDOM had to be apprehended by the FORCEFUL.

Those who were entering the KINGDOM had to deal with the persecution and tribulation that accompanied it.

This was the exhortation of the apostles:

Acts 14:22
Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through MUCH TRIBULATION enter into the KINGDOM of GOD. In other words, those entering the kingdom had to FORCEFULLY PRESS THROUGH the opposition of men motivated by Satan. They had to press through family opposition, religious opposition, and the opposition of the flesh to enter a spiritual, heavenly KINGDOM.

I have looked at both interpretations and believe that both have some valid points. Whichever interpretation you favor, there was a violence and force associated with the Kingdom which shows the passion that men have for this all important KINGDOM
