Drama

By Alana Stephenson
Medium close up- the shoulders and face is within the shot and
back ground is blurred but you can see that the characters face is
in focus this is called shallow focus, this is used to attract
attention to the character and the facial expression that she has, I
could use this to show facial expression to help express the way in
which the character is feeling.
• This is a three shot- you can see three people in the shot, you
can see the character in the middle is dancing and the other
two have stopped to look at something and are giving dirty
looks. I could use this shot to show other peoples
representations portraying bossiness', rudeness and sexuality.
This is an over the shoulder shot, the director has used this to
show the girl walking over to the other group of girls this is done
to show confrontation the director also uses facial expression
and body language to portray this if you look at the girl in the
blue although she is out of focus you can see her arm on her
head as a sign of anger or worry, I could use this to portray
conflict in different situations.
• This is a medium close up, the director has used this to show
the audience what he is doing, eating toast, showing the
audience that it is ordinary every day life, showing him
slouching in the chair with lots of rubbish in the background, I
could use this shot to show facial expression or to establish
the lifestyle and the personality of the person.
Narrative
• The typical narrative of a drama is to have people who do not get
along i.e. the two faced girls or boys men or women who always
cause conflict but in the end always get there comeuppance.
• A drama always tends to have a conclusive ending, the person who
has gone through rough times tends to end up back up in the same
place that they started, but they have became a better person
through the experiences that they have been through.
• A drama much like the name contains a lot of drama, usually
between family or friends and occasionally you will have the typical
teenage pregnancy which is true of most TV programs but in films
tends to be a little different form the standard TV drama.
Characters
• A drama contains major characters and minor characters, “The
distinction between heroes (or heroines) and villains”, the
shown difference between good people, bad people, liars and
cheats. It tends to be that the bad character will fixate on the
good character in order to annoy and corrupt them, the liars
and cheats will work together to accomplish their goals.
• Each character tends to have more of an emotional element
compared to that of James bond action movies or Se7en which
is horror.
• Each character takes a journey even if it is obvious or not, each
character becomes a better person through the events in which
they have experianced.
Locations
• The typical location for a drama is usually
contemporary and domesticated.
• Usually based in the home or nearby home
town i.e. a friends house or a nearby street.
• The home town location in a drama tends to
be in an inner city location such as inner
London.
Themes
• The themes of a drama tend to be social issues
such as teenage pregnancy, drug addictions and
family disputes and such like.
• The theme tends to follow in most dramas
where the same things happen in each movie,
usually in a different order
• The content is usually the same with teenage
pregnancy, drug abuse and family disputes but
usually the storyline is slightly different.
Iconography
• There is no typical iconography in a drama in
relation to mise-en scene.
• The only mise-en scene that tends to follow is
costume.
