Alcohol Addiction and Abuse

Alcohol addiction is defined as a compulsive need for a liquid poison that is produced by fermentation
of grains or fruits. These liquids include beer, wine and hard liquor. Alcoholism can lead to serious
problems for people, and can be physically and mentally destructive.

Currently alcohol use is implicated in half of all crimes, murders, accidental deaths and suicides.

10 to 15 years.

When a person drinks alcohol, the alcohol is absorbed by the stomach, enters the bloodstream, and
goes to all tissues. The effects of alcohol depend on a variety of factors including a person's size,
weight, age and sex, and the amount of food and alcohol consumed. Dis inhibiting the effect of
alcohol is one of the main reasons why it is used in many social situations. Other effects of moderate
alcohol intake include dizziness and talkativeness, the immediate effects of a greater amount of
alcohol include slurred speech, sleep disturbances, nausea and vomiting.

Alcohol addiction often has a familial pattern, and at least part of the transmission may be due to
genetic factors. The risk of addiction to alcohol is three to four times higher in close relatives of
people with alcohol addiction. Family members and significant others are seriously injured and
