DEFINITION OF CHEMICAL EQUATION

 A chemical equation is a short scientific representation

of a chemical reaction.

 The stoichiometry of a reaction is the description of the

relative qualities of the reactants and the products in

terms of moles.
EQUATION OF SIMPLE CHEMICAL
REACTION AND BALANCING THE
EQUATION

 Chemical reaction involves four stages.

 Stage 1

 Stage 2

 Stage 3

 Stage 4
STAGE 1:

 The equation is written in words.

 E.g., formation of water is as follows:-

 Hydrogen + oxygen water

STAGE 2:

 The words are replaced by formulas and symbols.

 Since hydrogen and oxygen exist as diatomic molecules

they are represented as H2 and O2.

 H2 + O2 H2O

 This equation is called skeleton equation.

STAGE 3:

 The number of atoms of each element on either side of

the equation must be equal in accordance with the law of

conservation of matter.

Elements Reactant Side Product Side

No. of H atoms 2 2

No. of O atoms 2 1
STAGE 3 CONTD….

 H2 + O2 2H2O

Elements Reactant Side Product Side

No. of H atoms 2 4

No. of O atoms 2 2

2H2 + O2 2H2O
STAGE 4:
 In this stage the physical state may be mentioned.
 2H2(g) + O2(g) 2H2O(l)

 The symbols used are:

g- gaseous substance
s- solid
l - liquid
- gaseous state
- precipitate
 These are the four important stages involved in a

chemical reaction.
