 Guide Words
These are words at the top of the page.
They tell you where you are according to
the alphabet.
 How the word is used
The dictionary tells you if a word is a noun, a
verb, an adjective and so on.
 Spelling and pronunciation
• The dictionary shows you the correct
spelling for a word. It also shows if a word
should be capitalized.
• A dictionary shows you how a word is
divided into syllables and how the word is
said or pronounced. The pronunciation is
given in parentheses ( ).
